Illinois bishops welcome driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants

Could be. Do they show the same interest and have the same policies for Chinese Buddhist immigrants? Or Muslim immigrants? Maybe they do.

All the more reason to be upset about illegal immigrants from Latin America. That’s illegal you realize. How would you like it if we overwhelmed and obliterated your borders from the south?

I can see Calgary covered with McDonald’s and Walmarts now.

I wouldn’t like it… but… there may conceivably be morally justified reasons for Americans to do so.

For instance during 9/11 all flights over the US were rerouted to Canada and we sheltered thousands of Americans.

Perhaps if there was a huge drought in the US populations might be dying of thirst and may want to relocate north. Should we say Yes, or No? It would change us, affect us, and cost us, but could we really say “No?”

BTW we have 7 Wal-Marts, 32 SEARS outlets, 47 McDonalds, 6 Burger Kings, 3 Old Navy stores, 7 GAP stores, (and 4 Target stores being built) in Calgary already, 60,000 American citizens, and the Ford F150 is the most numerous vehicle in the province so you would feel right at home.👍

Yes most are but even up here in the Yukon we get American “crazies”! Just last year RCMP chased a heavily armed couple from the US that tried to rob the bank in Haines Junction and tried to get to the US border at Beaver Creek. Yes they were caught - had entered the country illegally and were responsible for a number of crimes in BC and Yukon, one RCMP officer was injured in the resulting gun battle at the border. We have had numerous attempts by so called militia groups try to enter Canada through the Yukon as well - one small group intent on blowing up a pipeline.

I don’t see such violent and criminally intent individuals trying to enter the US on a regular basis though (although there are some - even the 9/11 bombers entered the country legally). Many of those who enter the US illegally seem desperate for a better life for themselves and thier children which one would think indicates a need to review and steamline the immigration process not heavyhandedness towards illegals.

The most desperate below our southern border are generally not the ones who manage to make it here. The most desperate in Latin America, just like the most desperate in Africa and India & Southeast Asia, are in a disadvantaged position with regarding to their social justice. By definition these potential immigrants, the desperately poor of whom Jesus spoke, have not enough cash to scrape together to pay coyotes or other smugglers (by sea, etc.).

So I would seriously appreciate it if those who argue about how grandly socially just illegal immigration is, would look the facts in the face and stop rationalizing that they’re doing God’s work by having very different standards for the physically able lower-middle-class than for the non-physically-able-and-non-proximate lower lower class in the Third World.

I’m not going to lie, I have some significant reservations about our Bishops supporting things like this. Supporting illegal (not undocumented, illegal) immigrants to get a driver’s licence goes way too far in my view. The above quote which says that it will allow them to safely get to work really get’s me. Hello! They aren’t supposed to be working in the first place. They are here illegally which is a crime. Working without the proper visa is a crime. And companies who hire them are committing a crime. Our Bishops should not be supporting that.

In case anyone is curious or thinks that I might have something against immigrants, I married a foreign national who is Hispanic and my sister married a man from Europe. Many of my students and friends are also immigrants. In addition, I agree completely with our Bishops that we do not turn people away for things like immediate shelter, food, the sacraments, emergency health care, etc. regardless of immigration status. That is the humane and moral thing to do.

My concern is not with immigrants, providing they are here legally, it is with the encouragement and rewarding for the violation of laws which are legitimate and not immoral on the part of our Bishops, and in the country in general.

I have my doubts that the bishops are doing their homework on this.

Maybe if the Catholic elite in this country actually READ bills and laws they comment on, they wouldn’t be surprised by say contraceptive mandates.

The Catholic Church teaching also advocates respect for sovereign borders.

Otherwise, ask the Vatican how they’d feel about admitting Muslim immigrants, especially ones who want sharia law.
