I’m sorry If I come off having a bad attitude in these posts. Its just hard because as of now I don’t really have anyone in my age group in my area since I’m out in the middle of rural nebraska where most people (let alone Catholics) are either older or have families. In public I try to be nice, and I try to find events and be positive whether its in my part time jobs (I substitute teach and work at a grocery store. Hopefully though I will get a teaching job or some other better full time job, or do this masters program I’ve looked into where I would teach in a Catholic School while getting a masters… and its subsidized if I get in:thumbsup:), but at the end of the day I feel so alone. I’ve always had friends, but i’ve never been close or had a group of friends who did everything together. I always see these people, and I just feel like i’m some creepy loner sitting in the corner, even though I try to smile and look like it doesn’t bug me.
When I’m home though I just get so sad about it. I feel like everyone else is out having fun while i’m just alone sitting on a stupid computer. I do pray and I do try to do other Catholic events when they are available, but there don’t seem to be much in my diocese that are youth centered. Also, other young people events don’t happen much unless it involves getting drunk or if I do go, I feel weird because i’m alone instead of with a friend or a group.

I guess I also feel like things just never go away. People say trust in God yet the wrong things happen. My father died at 15. I was bullied to the point of threatening kids at an otherwise great Catholic school, i couldn’t get a job. Sure good things have happened, but they seem insignificant to the bad things. I guess I have to look at it though that God is preparing me for something greater, but its so hard when I hear people say God has blessed them so much and I don’t get as many and it makes me doubt my faith. I do though try and keep going by going to mass and hoping God gives me enough strength to get through things. Even so, I still feel like I have to be self centered because no one else seems to care about me and my problems and just say “pray about it” or “your depressed” and just go on without actually helping. I guess though sometimes I just get so frustrated and want more than just the typical answers. I’ll also admit that I do like to argue sometimes and am sorry if I’ve come off as uncharitable or selfish Thank you for at least being honest. I guess sometimes I just still hold on to the idea that some girl will love me flaws and all, but I should stop that and try and change myself. What are some ways to get a better attitude? Any tips?

God Bless

Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb and say I think you’re getting closer to the heart of the matter here. You lost your dad - your male role model - right when you were making the transition from just barely beyond boyhood to manhood. I am guessing if your dad had not passed on, you would have had him to go to for more advice, and to imitate. Also you have some “baggage” from being bullied. That can drag a person down. You have to work through the traumatic memories and try to forgive the perpetrators so you can be free of all that negative junk. Your spirit will be lighter and optimism will come easier if you can jettison those bad memories. I think a spiritual director or mentor may be a big help if you can find the right person.

Sometimes the church young adult programs do leave something to be desired. I used to go and feel disappointed too. Well, it was hard not to because the ratio of females to males was high, and the available males were often considering seminary or were confirmed bachelors - or at least didn’t get bitten by the marriage bug till well into their 30’s! So there were a lot of us ladies feeling like wallflowers. Now if this is the way it is in your group, you may actually have an advantage.

Sadly, it is true that some go to the groups and don’t set a good example, consume excess alcohol or other problematic behaviors. But the fact that you don’t will be in your favor too if the young woman who values your moral standards happens to show up one night. However, if the groups aren’t your thing, there are other avenues.

Ben I know what it is like to have isolation, bad things happen, etc and feel like everyone else who is so blessed can’t relate. You are blessed to suffer with Christ and he will heal you and bless you if you give yourself over to Him. I found this surrender plus rosary, FASTInG for my intentions (even just small regular sacrifice offered up regularly seemed to make my prayers suddenly on steroids) especially the rosary every day. And mass for my personal intentions. And remembering that this life is a journey and heaven is our home, not here.

I went through a lot of suffering and offered it with Christ’s, you can offer it for the holy souls in purgatory or your own intentions. I am suddenly being miraculously healed of emotional problems that plagued me my whole life & being blessed with love. So now I can be one of those annoying people who gushes about how blessed they are. J/k. Seriously though this too shall pass, turn fully to God right now and ask Him to take you to your destiny your path, His plan for you. I had to get to a point where I was ok with no friends no money no home people disliking me humiliation rejection and loss of loved ones, because as long as I had Jesus it was ok. That hurt but it is worth it. You prob wont have to go rou all that but my point is i wouldnt trade it because of where it brought me now. Please don’t give up.

Also not to be too psychoanalytical but if your father passed away, which I am sorry to hear, I suggest the first thing you need to focus on is getting really close to your Father in heaven, ESP via a spiritual director. See men need a strong loving father in order to get their positive self image (healthy self respect as made in God’s image, not arrogance) and women need the loving father to attract and be attracted to good men. That is why God is our dad because all the people who lost fathers or had mean ones can still be healed and have a good life of giving and receiving love. So ask God to show you what is a loving father, and I think the rest will follow. And a spiritual director helps a lot.

Incidentally you look like a really warm attractive guy. But this is all a mental thing. I am pretty and have always been told so but for 20+ years literally perceived myself as very unattractive because of my self image. As in I might as well have been looking at a different person in the mirror than what others see. Once my sister took a photo of me when I didn’t know it and I looked better than most photos because I didn’t know I was being photographed. So my self image wasn’t projecting out. I had a photographer friend who said that the second most people know they are being photographed, their self image comes out (except professional models etc) and they instantly look less attractive, more awkward, etc if they feel insecure which most people do to some degree. So I say all this to prove the point that it’s your own comfort with who you are, who God made you as, versus just “looks” which smart women don’t even date based on bc they will fade, and yes confidence and warmth are far more attractive anyway. In fact character is the main reason to marry someone not looks money or even just attraction (of course that is important) because all those things can shift but character is the real deal.

I wil pray for you!

I think you need to take your own advice and get over yourself. Some men can be close to God and strong in their faith but at the end of the day they’re also human and make mistakes. Stop putting yiur future husband on a pedastool and realize that we all have flaws. Remember, sometimes having a good faithful woman will give a man the courage the seek out a strong relationship with God.
Maybe I’m late to respond, but in my defense, I don’t expect perfection from someone. But I don’t think I shouldn’t look for someone who is striving for that ideal. What I meant to stress, in perhaps a stronger way, was that LOOKS is nowhere near the number 1 criteria for me. I am not so naivee as to expect perfection: in that case I would be a nun. Rather, those are the ideals that I want- clearly if a guy ever has a question about his faith or something, that’s not a deal breaker. I get sin, because I sin. But since I am 1) not in a position where God has led me to think it is a prudent moment to be looking, 2) I believe looking is done (if I was looking) better by forging tons of friendships and being social and open to how God uses that, and 3) seeing what God has in store next re: life, I am at a point that I can say in the ideal world these are all the things I hope for.

Anyway what I mean to say in all this is that those were ideals and I have really no intention of saying those aren’t my ideals. In the real world of real human men, what I am looking for is a guy who has similar ideals about who he wants to allow God to form him to be. The goal being for both of us to be instruments through whom God can, hopefully by the time of our death, bring about that ideal in. Does that clarify my response. I really just wanted to emphasize that virtue, and someones interior state, is at least in my book a much bigger part of the decision (assuming attraction, which is not correspondent to being Joseph Gordon Levitt in the looks department) that looks would be in whether i go out with/go steady with/ marry a guy. Does that clear it up?

God Bless,
Bells

If that were the case I can only imagine that the Catholic Church wouldn’t allow infertile couples or post-menopausal women to marry. But they do, so even from a Catholic perspective your definition is lacking.

Also, your rant about marriage in general contains absolutely nothing of value to the OP. Unless of course, you’re suggesting that he approach women by saying “Excuse me miss, but would you care to be with me for the rest of our lives so that we can raise children?” I can smell the restraining order already.
Dear friend, according to Catholic Answers radio, a la’ Jimmy Akin, infertile couples cannot enter into a sacramentally valid marriage because they cannot have children. Why? Article 7, Section 1601 of the CCC states, “The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.” Sorry you don’t like the definition of marriage. Write a letter to the Pope, I guess. Have a blessed day.

Why are you staying in rural Nebraska? If there’s nothing there now, what makes you think there will be something after you get your master’s degree and/or a job teaching in a rural Catholic school?

Last thought – I also refer you to Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, bishop of Oakland and renowned Canon Lawyer, regarding my last post re: the CCC and the definition of marriage. Among other things, see his show on CA Radio on Jan. 30, 2012, at 32:00. Modern / postmodern culture does not determine that of which marriage consists. Bummer, I know.

As self-assured as Trevor repeatedly makes himself sound here, that’s not the same thing as actually being correct. The fact is that he’s most likely confusing “impotence” with “infertility” and the Church does NOT bar infertile couples per se from getting married. This isn’t even up for debate so let’s just get back on topic.

Thats why i’m getting the masters, so I can leave, or at least get experience. Thats been the problem so far in getting a teaching job. They want either experience or jock coaches, and i don’t have experiences and while i’d love to coach, i wouldn’t be a good coach.

You are either confusing impotence with infertility or you don’t understand what the catholic church means when they say “ordered”. But yes, infertile and old couples can validly marry. But just because they are infertile or post menopausal doesn’t mean that their relationship isn’t ordered to procreation.

Aww don’t be so harsh on yourself. I’m the same way I dont feel like I’m attractive enough for marriage or a relationship but everyone is telling me I HAVE to get married. Well I dont think you look unattractive at all. I’d go for a guy like you cuz you seem really nice, you are probably about to relate to me, and over I think you’re worth a shot. Then again you’re a little old for me 😛 haha but all I’m saying is that looks don’t mattee because 30 years down the road looks go away and all you have is personality left. So if you chose a rotten personality over looks well bad choice. Wait. You’re still pretty young I mean go out have fun enjoy yourself meet other people. Maybe youre not yet ready to get married. My cousin didn’t get married till she was in her 30s. Lots of ppl don’t get married till their late 20s. What’s your hurry? Be patient.

Wow! Nice! 😃

Why don’t you guys just pair up since you seem to like him? He is only 23 unless you are < 18.

I don’t want to be self-assured. I don’t want to be anything. I guess I posted some things in anger. I apologize to all of you. Sorry about that. Perhaps I need to start my own post about getting over a bad marriage. I truly apologize to you all.

Brother, I apologize for my thoughtless posts. I was wallowing in my own self-pity. Please take the remarks of the others as great advice.

In Christ,

Trevor

I may have covered this with another post, but just to make sure, I apologize. Whole-heartedly. I tagged on to this post out of anger over my ex leaving me for another man, and I should not have said the things I said. Please forgive me.

looks fine to me . maybe your going after the wrong types of women? the bible talks about being careful about that. if your going after the hourglass model type figure women sure. but the bible talks about the heart. Go for a women for he heart not because shes overly attractive If your a nice guy with a good heart who is not creepy nor too pushy you will find someone…

Rose, if you are called to marriage then God will send you the man that you are intended to marry. One cannot be called to marriage but yet there is no one out there who will be in a relationship with them.

Also, please know that you are beautiful in God’s eyes. 🙂
