I'm disappointed when I do not actively (through time) love Him as I ought

I keep forgetting that I’m to love God with all my soul, heart, mind and strength. I know I can do better, and I just have to keep myself focused continuously on silent prayer. I cannot read too much, but I welcome any thoughts you may have.
 
Yes me too. You’re not alone on this,one. I have to get rid of selfishness & self will. I will pray for you too. I have found that a prayer to Our Lady works wonders. Water is turned into wine…
 
Our fallen nature is ever present to us; we see through a glass darkly.

Prayer, acts of faith, and Mass are great God-given helps to keep our focus.
 
I try not to, but I fall every day. But as long as I keep getting up and trying again, I hope it’ll be alright at the end. I also constantly ask my patron Fathers and saints for their intercession. They have helped me so much! 🙂

Always remember that God said if you love Him to obey his commandments. That is what He asks of us to show our love and to love others as we love ourselves. The whole of the Torah.

I suppose there are many who obey the commandments out of fear, and not out of love as they ought.

I also disagree with your analysis that the entire Torah can be deduce to commandments. The Torah is like a road map that directs pious Jews closer to God. The Torah is mystical, and has much underlying wisdom.
 
Maybe I should not be revealing this, but I use medical marijuana and I find it very conducive to prayer and feeling of spiritual love. I try really hard not to indulge in worldly pleasure, and overall I keep improving, but pot is a lot like coffee to me. Both of them do something to my brain that causes me to be more spiritual.

Well join the club! We are all facing the same problems. If you want to read about a Saint who had the same problems please pick up the Diary written by St. Maria Faustina. By reading her Diary it will help you to digest on this common problem we all share. I find her one of best inspirations for my life. The Lord Jesus had given her one of best spiritual retreats ever in the history of the Church.
 
Please read and ponder this section from C.S. Lewis:
Some writers use the word charity to describe not only Christian love between human beings, but also God’s love for man and man’s love for God. About the second of these two, people are often worried. They are told they ought to love God. They cannot find any such feeling in themselves. What are they to do? Do not sit trying to manufacture feelings. Ask yourself, ‘If I were sure that I loved God, what would I do?’ When you have found the answer, go and do it.

On the whole, God’s love for us is a much safer subject to think about than our love for Him. Nobody can always have devout feelings: and even if we could, feelings are not what God principally cares about. Christian Love, either towards God or towards man, is an affair of the will. If we are trying to do His will we are obeying the commandment, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God.’ He will give us feelings of love if He pleases. We cannot create them for ourselves, and we must not demand them as a right. But the great thing to remember is that, though our feelings come and go, His love for us does not. It is not wearied by our sins, or our indifference; and, therefore, it is quite relentless in its determination that we shall be cured of those sins, at whatever cost to us, at whatever cost to Him.

No offense but I have heard the same refrain from people on heroin. Be careful where you go with “medical” marijuana. Societal approval does not make something intrinsically “good”, nor does one’s own “feelings”.

What you said is very true!

Our Lord Jesus Christ, in prayer, can bring us to where we need to be. There is such a thing as “escape”, and a false peace.

Frankly, if you are using drugs to improve your spiritual life I would say that is a sin a grave matter and should be stopped immediately.

In one word, LOVE! Smoking medical marijuana or drinking coffee usually results in feelings of LOVE, both towards God and my neighbors.
