I think thats pretty presumptuous that you would know someones personal like so well that you can say for sure that God is not with them. I think you ought to pray like a good Catholic and think before you make judgments on someones personal relationship with God.

Peace/love/bless/etc
I am not judging, I was responding to what you said in your post #37. When we make decisions that are against God’s laws we can’t expect Him to be there approving of it. Now, are you assuming I don’t pray??? God Bless, Memaw

Well Im pretty sure God doesn approve of you saying he doesnt approve.

That’s unfair and inhospitable (word?;)) to throw at someone. I hope he is not a troll, and that we have offered him some encouragement. I hope he returns here to discuss, fellowship more. Maybe he will someday encourage others to use natural family planning.
It has been my observation on this forum, that those who post provocative subject matter are for the most part looking to get a rise out of others’ here .Someone who sincerely wants some helpful (name removed by moderator)ut to their question, frames the question in a way that reflects that desire
Just a hunch n my part.😉

A vasectomy is against the natural law and the divine law. Therefore God can not approve of it, as to obtain a vasectomy would be a sin, and God cannot will sin.

With all due respect, it’s kind of sad to see everyone arguing about this at this point. We can only pray, and look out for our own thoughts, not change the minds of the others in the thread.

Hi all,

I’ve been reading quite a bit on contraception here lately and I’ve come to the conclusion that the best way for me to stop at three kids is to have a vasectomy. Following this I’ll just go to confession and confess the sin. It’s like the ultimate Catholic loop-hole.

Has anyone else done this?

Cheers,

J
Such as described would be not only the stuff of mortal sin, but the confession itself would be invalid and a further mortal sin. There is no loop -hole.

No repentance no forgiveness. Period.

Defending the Faith is not a sad thing. Only the Holy Spirit can change someones mind. Speaking the truth is all our responsibility and for a Catholic to do less than that is letting Our Lord down. Looking out for our own thoughts is a bit self-centered. God Bless. Memaw

Before I go off completely, remember that the Our Father says “thy will be done”. Instead, you want to be a Frank Sinatra Catholic and do it your way.

Now made me laugh.

I don’t think you’re a troll. I think you’re really confused about what catholic teaching really is.

Confession isn’t valid unless you are contrite. The definition of that isn’t “I feel a bit guilty.” Rather, it is “I wish I had not done that.” You won’t be forgiven if you don’t wish you hadn’t done it.

You appear to be suffering from a form of what is called “Cheap Grace” philosophy. Consider looking it up and doing some reading. At some level, you sense this is true which is why you posted.

Sorry that some of us got rather heated about it.

Well said! God bless!

I’m pretty sure God doesn’t approve of you saying He doesn’t approve of people who point out the things He doesn’t approve, as taught in the Bible and by His Church. 😉

OldNewCatholic, let me begin by saying that I kind of understand where you’re coming from. I, too, once considered having a vasectomy, but ended up deciding not to do it. It was a cause of great anxiety and anguish for me, wanting to do what’s right by the Church and but also needing to control the size of my family.

Here’s my background:

I’m fairly young (34 years old, and my wife’s 33), four kids (aged 8, 6, 3 and 11 months) - all of whom are asthmatic and my second child with autism.

Re NFP, all of them except the oldest have been NFP “surprises”. I brought this up with my spiritual adviser, telling him that NFP doesn’t really work for us because my wife is so extremely irregular and that she ovulates twice in one cycle every two or three months, making rhythm, basal temp and billings very tricky. Her shortest cycle has been 7 days, and her longest 38. His reply: absolute abstinence, i.e., no sex EVER with the lovely woman to whom I’m married and with whom I share a bed for the next 10-15 years, until she enters menopause.

What???

So, there. That was how I found myself seriously considering getting snipped. It’s not like I wanted the procedure done (what guy would, right?). It’s just that it seemed so obvious that it had to be done. Like I said earlier though, I ended up deciding against it. It wasn’t an easy decision then, and still isn’t easy now.

As for you, I suppose the most I can offer is prayer. I don’t think I’m exactly in the position to say what most of the previous posters have said since I’m probably as big a sinner as you are in this regard.

I suspect the OP is not participating further here, but in case…
As far as not being really sorry you have it completely wrong. I know what I’m doing is wrong in the eyes of god and the church and I feel sorry about it. I’ll continue to feel sorry for it but I’m still going to have it done.
You should be advised that the sorrow of which you speak here is not sufficient sorrow for confession. The Church teaches that real contrition includes “a firm purpose of not sinning in the future”. Clearly, this is at odds with your suggestion that you are sorry but will do it anyway.

Or to put it another way, if you are truly sorry for the sin you are going to commit, you simply will not commit it.

(let’s not even go into the absurd logic of presuming forgiveness for the sin of presumption.)

Hello Usige.
My heart truly weeps for you. I had a vasectomy after my second child was born. Since neither my wife or I were Catholic at the time it wasn’t a big deal and would not have been a mortal sin; grave matter yes, mortal sin no. The problem is I kept having nagging doubts at the oddest times. When I was called home to the Church those doubts burst through a dam and the grief for what I did nearly overwhelmed me. About eight years after my vasectomy and two months before being received into the Church I had a reversal. While it wasn’t required it was part of my personal resolve to right the wrongs I had done to God. He has since blessed us with 4 more children. I say blessed because the doctor gave us less than a 30% chance of having anymore kids. When we let him know that our fourth post reversal child was born he was amazed because most men only have one or two more.

Although He blessed us, I know that I will still have to account for my selfishness come the final judgement. Even if you are absolved that does not mean you won’t be called to account for your choice. Assuming we make it to purgatory, we still are liable for the temporal punishment for our sins. Knowingly sinning and then presuming on God’s mercy are a recipe for disaster.

I pray that the Lord sends you the graces to do the right thing. So many inadvertently walk into the darkness, but every knowing step into it makes it that much harder to return to the Lord.
Thank you sooooo much for sharing this. I hope it is as inspiring to the men as it is to the women. Tubal ligation is much more difficult to reverse.

God bless you and yours.

Glenda

(God bless you and your wife. Sometimes our cycles can be out of whack and finding a dr to get to the bottom of it, without throwing a pill at you, is hard. There are places out there that might could help your wife, assuming you haven’t tried that. But, if you are in a situation where you are called to avoid children, even for a time being, total abstinence is hard, but not impossible with God’s grace. We work out our salvation this way. Prayers for your family.)

Hello OS.
Good intentions are not sinful, no. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The prohibition against vasectomy’s are not particular to the Catholic religion. This concerns the natural law and can be known and understood by all persons. The purpose of the sexual organ is to engage in the sexual act of reproduction. If you did not consent to the proceedure or supported him in it, then you have committed no fault, nor would anyone encourage you to withhold the marital debt from him. What’s done is done, and you simply have to make the best of the situation.

For someone in your case I think that there are other options. NFP stands to mind, and abstaining from sexual intimacy is another. But, although in your own case this is no longer applicable, for others in similar circumstances I would encourage them to consult with doctors (psychiatrists) to see about alternative medications that may be more accomodating to pregnancy. As you no doubt know, psychiatric science can be hit and miss at times, and it’s far from an exact science. My brother’s fiancée has had new courses of medications every other month until they finally found the right balance for her. I would encourage those to keep searching.

In Jesus and Mary,
OS.
Are you aware there are no absolutes in the treatment of mental disorders? They know what they don’t know and know what they cannot cure. They are very well educated guessers at most. If you were convinced by a person in the mental health field that the best “treatment” for your mental health was to remain childless, then you are being fed an agenda, not genuine health care. There are Christian therapists who would gladly guide through your child bearing years with patience and love and concern not only for your temporal well being, but your spiritual wellness as well.

Sterilization, contraception and abortion all leave damage in the psyche and for those who are already damaged or impeded in some way, this only multiplies the difficulties they have to deal with and sometimes, such as in the case of completed abortion, their advise can leave damage it takes a lifetime to overcome. Those who are honest in the mental health field know from dealing with those damaged by abortion, contraception and sterilization that these practices are anything but health care.

While your illnesses are serious, they shouldn’t determine your ability to bear and care for children. Most persons with mental disorders actually do bear children and raise them and live well enough. To think otherwise is an absolute that is actually an agenda for a permanent solution to those who are impeded by illnesses and disorders.
