  1. Not a vending machine
  2. You need to know Christ that is why things are not going up with you
Why is it that asking for God is being taken as if he is being used as a vending machine. Whenever a thread comes in about a person going under temptation or whatever negative thought, your suggestion is to pray. You would recommend Novenas so that the Saints can pray with/for you, to random “get to know christ and pray on and on”… now when years have gone by of the results being the same, the answer now is: "Well you shouldn’t look at God like some vending machine. Come on. If a guy asks me for change for food, should i brush him off and tell him: “I’m not a vending machine”. If some homeless person who has been in his/her situation for years and has prayed for help out of it goes unanswered, is “God is not a vending machine” a nice excuse to tell him why things are just not happening… If asking him is making him like a vending machine, then why pray for his blessings in the first place?
God is sort of a vending machine…

Let me put it this way, do you get much from a vending machine when you put no money in? probably not.

Now let me give you an example of human mindset:

This fellow named… Renter was renting from Dr. Landlord. Dr. Landlord if he was catholic I would recommend him for the sainthood. I only know of Dr. L from Renter. Renter was perpetually behind up to 6+ months on his rent and was given years leeway by Dr. L. Renter was given work by Dr. L to help pay rent and have extra cash. Dr.L became the probono doctor of Renter’s sick dying mother before her passing. After years like this Dr. L says he is done and wants Renter to go so he can sell the house (Renter being 6 months behind on rent).

THEN because Dr. L is saintly he says to Renter “Pay next months rent on time and I will cut your debt in half and you can stay”…Renter…well Renter pas a week late and Dr. L says goodbye he can not handle it anymore.

Renter Says Dr. L is a scumbag who is a cold heartless jerk. He says “I paid him so he took back his deal, dealbreaker” (ignoring the week late part after years of lateness)

You see here Renter believes he is truly in the right. Renter believes he has put full money in the vending machine, But in truth he has not. So most of the time the “I am such a good person” statements are much like Renter…full of hot air and denial.

If asking him is making him like a vending machine, then why pray for his blessings in the first place?
This isn’t about asking God for things so much as it is wanting God to absolutely take away everything in your life that you don’t feel like dealing with.

You have an addiction to smoking and to masturbating.

God doesn’t instantly remove this from you, which you took up on your own free will, and you then get angry at Him and make comments about how He’s not helping you.

What do you expect people to tell you? That you’re right in being angry?

You’re not right. And God is not a “vending machine.” He’s a Father. And you’re a human being who can both pray and work and then own up to your own responsibilities in the choices you make. When you fall it’s not God’s fault. When you don’t have the friends you want, the career you want, the car you want, the house you want, the wife you want … what do you think the proper reaction is? To complain and moan at God and tell Him He’s unfair and mean and cruel? To tell everyone they’re making excuses when they tell you you need to toughen up and man up?

Forgive me, but that’s ridiculous.

Even from a non-religious perspective it’s ridiculous.

I suppose your not addressing me but others. I do not remember the last time I have recommended praying a novena (as wonderful as they can be) …and I have a habit of being rather extensive in my replies about how to deal with temptation and negative thoughts…nor a simple “get to know Christ and pray on and on”…though yes a relationship with Christ and the Father and the Holy Spirit is central to everything!

It really seems you need to start meeting regularly with a Priest- you need a person to interact with not a computer screen …that is what is best.

  1. Not a vending machine
Why is it that asking for God is being taken as if he is being used as a vending machine.
I noted that yes persons can have misunderstandings and incorrect approaches to prayer - approaching it as if God were a vending machine - if I do X so long - I will get Y. If I put in my prayers - I should get what I am wanting.

It is good to pray in petition- yes.

Asking things of God is not per se to be taken as if one is approaching God as a vending machine - I was not inferring that. I was noting that persons can approach God in that way. Especially when they do not get what they want.

I think that one way for us to examine ourselves to if we are approaching God in this way is to ask ourselves - when we do not get what we want - have we started “kicking the vending machine”…

No I did not say that… that was not what I was saying.

That though is very much key to happiness (even in the midst of sufferings!) - and from some things you have written -even the words there up about “same Christian excuses” and having “na” as your religion…it really seems that you do not yet know Jesus Christ and the Father and the Holy Spirit in that very personal way…very personal relationship.

And here is a free series that I have seen a few parts of - take some time each day and watch it - thewildgooseisloose.com/series-segments

One poster has taken things out of context and viewed this is “you can’t have everything you want”… That isn’t the point. The only reason why it is ridiculous is because your comprehension of what i’ve said is ridiculous.

Having one answered prayer, especially dealing with sins you don’t want in your life, doesn’t equate to wanting everything. I never claimed to ask God to poof the things i desire in life out of the sky, but to aid me in what I need in my life.

The point is, how am I going to believe in praying to God when my situation is something that has been addressed HERE for many years? Now, when we look around the world and see people in worse situations, how can we be that naive that we can pray to God. I guess a homeless person doesn’t have the right to feel any form of bitterness or doubt about praying because, well… “we can’t get everything we want” is a line that they should realize right.

Most people with sins and want to escape them are no longer doing it out of a simple choice. That is such a simplistic mindset of it.

I’ve been meeting regularly with Priests, mostly every Thursday. I ended up going to different churches to meet different Priests. They all told me the same thing, a bunch of nothing, and then recommended that seek counseling. I guess prayer isn’t really for people battling sins they want out of nor asking for guidance from God to lead them in the right direction. I guess asking for those things is way too much and is treating God like some vending machine. I was just confused because some verses and some people always suggested to seek God in prayer during difficult times, but when nothing happens then it’s the persons fault for thinking that God is going to answer it positively.

I have had about 3 different accounts here with in the last 8 or so years, posting mostly in the prayer section so it’s really bothering me how people here are thinking that I’m just giving up out of being spoiled or something.

Then:
  1. Seek out another Priest.
  2. Seek out a good Catholic Counselor as you have been advised- CA recommended on the air this source catholictherapists.com/
(also there is “Catholic Charities” I hear they do such too.) They can work with you on a sliding scale for payment.

Hum…

Person A - “Lord help me with my problems…”

Person A goes to see several Priests…God inspires them to tell person A they need to seek a Counselor…Person A says -oh that is too expensive …and does not explore all the options for such…

Person A- “Lord why do you not help me?”

God: I have inspired 5 Priests now to tell the same thing…why do you not listen to their counsel and do what they said?

  1. I’ve been to about 7 priests, i’ve given about 5 of them about 6 or so chances. I’ve also attended about 3 Life in the Spirit seminars.
  2. I’ve inquired about the Counselors, they are way expensive here in NYC. I am part of about 4 Catholic Charities: Feeding the Homeless, sometimes traveling to random areas for ministry. I even became a member of the communications department, which is free work.
Thanks for all your help. Don’t get me wrong, i really appreciate the effort, but all the suggestions are very old repetitive once. I think i’m just going to accept the situation I am in, if this is the life that i’m supposed to have then so be it.

However, i don’t think I will be believing in the whole “seek God’s help” line anymore, or at least at this time. Faith is a very powerful thing but it can be a very heartbreaking one esepcially if you are trying to have faith in God’s help in the negatives of life. I’ve convinced myself to wait on the Lord, but common sense as well is triggering and my youth has it’s clock. It’s like the christian motto for unsolved issues is “hey, you’ll be happy anyway, after you die…”.

Well God, it’s almost 200 bucks per session that is about 2-3 hours and I don’t make that much. The last time i did that i spend almost 400 dollars, and the guy just made me lie down, close my eyes, and told me random things i could of heard in a forum or read in the Bible or even the Secret book.

I’ve been working so hard, sending out many job applications for 2 years. Maybe if my financial situation can get better i can probably afford a better councilor with out having to worry about paying my bills. Anyway, why seek a councilor anyway when I can seek you who is supposed to be greater than a councilor. I’ve been told by many of your people including verses to seek you when times are hard, but then i get passed on to someone else that will charge me money.

Go to the site a sent ya…200 dollars? Nonsense. They work with ya…tis called a sliding scale.

And call your* Archdiocese *- keep seeking - they can even recommend a PRIEST who is also a counselor…you can again talk to the counseling wing of Catholic ORGANIZATION NAMED Catholic Charities…contact the Fransiscan Friars of the Renewal there…keep seeking - you have been told by what 7 Priests to go see a counselor -do it and do not make excuses…😉
Anyway, why seek a councilor anyway when I can seek you who is supposed to be greater than a councilor.
Because God works that way too…and as he said in Scripture - neglect not the physician! And what? 7 Priests have told ya to…

I will try this. Thank you for the link, Financial reasons are not an excuse. I’ve typed in every zip code i can remember in NYC, nothing has been popping out in the search engine… but i will dig deeper in the site to see what i can find.

I feel like I am in a very big battle in regards to my faith, i certainly feel more “hurt” inside the fact that it is slipping… I’m pray as hard as i can but this is very exhausting, not just mentally but physically now… as to what you’ve suggested now.

Cisco, I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise to you. I’m really sorry that what I wrote wasn’t helpful to you. I didn’t intend to make you feel bad, I was attempting to help you try to see praying to God from another angle. Anyway, I realise it wasn’t applicable in this instance. We can of course call on God to help us overcome our sins, I know I have on many occasions. Just hang in there! Things will turn around for you if you persevere.

Yes do not give up…make those calls etc …

And above all - no matter what:

*Hold fast *to Jesus of Nazareth the Christ and Risen Lord!!

He loves you! He is the Way the Truth and the Life!

Even in difficulties and even in darkness – he is the Good Shepherd.

In him (and thus in his Church) is true life!

Hold Fast! Keep close to him and his Church and the Sacraments…repent - confess - say “I believe” - pray - and get that counseling.

Hold Fast!

I figured I’d offer you some (what I hope is) practical advice, as one who has gone through aspects of this issue. Please understand that when I write ‘you’, I’m not meaning you personally, in fact I’m generally meaning me, but it’s just the way I think and write… as though I’m teaching somebody else. Some of this info may not even be relevant to you personally.
1 Corinthians 10:13 None of the trials which have come upon you is more than a human being can stand. You can trust that God will not let you be put to the test beyond your strength, but with any trial will also provide a way out by enabling you to put up with it.
This verse was a major lightbulb moment for me and had a huge impact on my life. It’s basically saying that regardless of the temptation, I can withstand it… it’s within me already to withstand it, if I trust in God. I’ll always be able to avoid the sin in one way or another. That’s a very powerful thought.

With masturbation, there’s a trigger… at least in my case. Whether you see a person that arouses you, or hear something, or whether you’re watching a movie, or watching porn etc. Sometimes even our own thoughts can arouse us.

I notice also that there’s a point of no return when it comes to masturbation, and if you allow yourself to get to that point, nothing can stop you. The trick is not to let yourself get beyond the initial arousal stage. Nip it in the bud straight away. The other issue with masturbation, and porn, is that you have to want to give it up. There’s pleasure involved in masturbation and porn, and so it’s not an easy thing to want to give up. In my case I want to do God’s will and I truly detest my sin, I place God above the temporary pleasure/release… and the remorse that eventually follows (sometimes not an instant remorse either). It’s been too easy in the past to put God out of mind and to carry on with sinning because we like it, but eventually we get called back and by then we’re weighed down with sin. It can be a vicious circle if you let it be. We have to choose once and for all to do God’s will and overcome our sinful ways.

Now, going back to that verse. I have it in me already to withstand any temptation… I really just have to try, and keep trying. Do whatever it takes. I did fail a few times initially but I’m fairly successful now. I think that the more often you overcome the temptation, the easier it gets.

Basically we have to avoid the triggers too. At the first moment of arousal… get away from the trigger. If it’s in your thoughts, watch the news or something… there’s nothing arousing on the news, at least for me. If it’s someone you’ve seen, go for a 10 minute walk, start praying etc. If you have to, go for another walk… seriously, it’s a matter of getting out of the situation at the first sign of trouble and doing whatever it takes to get over it. Distractions. Keeping your hands off helps too. I knew I had it in me because I absolutely and without doubt believed that bible verse.

Regarding prayers… praying for chastity is praying specifically for what you need. I think there’s sometimes a gap in our lives too… an emotional need that needs filling, so it would probably be a good idea to think about making some new friendships as that would be beneficial too, as we’re not meant to be solitary beings. I feel there’s more I could say but I can’t seem to think of anything else right now. Anyway, this is all very personal so I hope you can find something useful in this.

Not sure about your analogy here, though its understandable and relatable…
But what of these Words, spoken by Jesus considering what you said here.
Matthew 18: 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22JJesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
