But seriously, what i want to know is, why do people leave the Catholic religion.
Please explain your reasons why you left…

well very long story but for myself it started with an incomplete confession and then i lost faith in just about every single catholic doctrine.save for the Eucharsit but even that was an incomplete beleif,i beleived that He was present in any church’s communion service in the same manner a catholic believes He is present…then with almost all my faith gone i jumped ship…my eyes and hearted opened up to the truth and came crawling back home to the fullness of the truth,His Body,His bride,His church,my mother.

  2. I knew it was a “joke.” I know better of you. This couldn’t happen with you so suddenly.
 
I asked this question to my Mom a few weeks ago. She used to be Catholic (or still is… I’m not exactly sure…) and converted to Baptist when she married my father. Her reply was “The Catholic Church made me do it”.

Back when my parents wanted to be married, a priest told them they couldn’t due to the fact that it was an interracial marraige and that was against the laws of nature; so they went to a different priest. That priest told them they couldn’t because my father was Baptist and she was Catholic and that was against the laws of God. (that priest was arrested for child abuse and is now in prison).

So then they went to the Baptist Church…
(luckily my maternal grandmother, a devout Catholic, would not allow her to have a Protestant wedding, so they recieved the Sacrament of Matrimony from a priest my grandma was friends with, but then hopped ship the day after.)

but… now that I’ve returned to Catholicism its made for some interesting family arguments ie (“if the Catholic Church had its way you wouldn’t even be born”)
 
I had been raised Catholic from birth…and I joined the Army in 1967. Before I went to Vietnam in 1968…those of us that were Catholics were called to a chapel where we met with a Catholic Chaplain… He spoke to us and it was all about the fact that all of us were going to war. He spoke about the fact that many if not most of us would experience combat and face the eventuality that we would have to kill another human being or be killed ourselves. I already knew that and accepted that fact…I was from a military family…my father was a career officer in Combat Arms who fought in two wars… But what the Chaplain told us was: Don’t worry about having to kill the enemy… God is on our side. For some reason, that statement angered me deeply. I knew the realities of the war in Vietnam, and I knew that even though we were going to be fighting communists… I also knew that Catholicism was strong in South Vietnam, and there had been Catholics all over Vietnam…and that the likelihood that many of them had been pressed into serving the VC and the NVA was very high. This was strongly on my mind and actually caused a rift in my mind and heart. It caused me to fall away from the Church. I served my country in Vietnam…I did my duty and my mission was to eliminate the enemy. I could not help but wonder…how many of my brother Catholics met their deaths due to my mission and its successes.

After returning to the US and dealing with much anger and sadness over what I had been through…I sought counseling and got it… it helped me to some extent. To make a long story short, it took me a long time to work through the issues…and I do mean a long time.

I actually felt the pull of the Holy Spirit…pulling me back to my beliefs…but I investigated other beliefs…all of which left me empty and very unfulfilled. I came back to the Catholic Church… and I found the fulfillment and peace that I had been missing. 🙂

Once I stepped aside from debates over salvation, atonement,
justification, categories of grace, categories of sin,
sources of authority, indulgences, mediators - and great
rest and inner quiet was found, in acknowledging the God of
Israel as the one God. It was coming home.

I stopped practicing Catholicism in 1965. I did aplogetics
for decades, in the sense of defending the Church, if I heard
her doctrines or practice mis-stated. I did this because I felt
that if one is going to reject teaching, one does well to understand,
thoroughly, that which one is rejecting.

My purpose, now, is to speak to those who have found
no home, within Christianity - yet who know that God exists.
The earliest faith remains the true faith. Judaism. There
is no call to convert to same, for that is not needed.

I always knew, from childhood, that there was something
too complex about Catholicism. Later, I came to the same
conclusion about Christianity itself, as I followed the debates.

Like the lions, surrounding Daniel, I found Christianity far too
complex to be the true faith.

The quiet of His pasture is better. We are to live so that the
world is a better place for us having lived. Born into this world
in innocence, we are to do our best to chose good. When we
fail, we turn back to Him, and ask forgiveness.

I have found that man complicates, not God.
And in finding this, I found Him.

And I suppose the fact that he upheld the Church’s teaching on being equally yoked in marriage (which we also find in the Bible) is considered by them to be evidence that he was a child abuser? 🤷 :rolleyes:

Just tell them, God writes straight with crooked lines - He obviously has some special task for you to do on behalf of His Church. 😉

I am impressed with your story.

Considering that, I wonder if you ever saw the movie “One Man’s Hero” starring Tom Berenger? It is very Catholic themed and I think you might appreciate it. It was not a very popular movie but it addresses some of your thoughts in war.

See if you can find it.

I have personaly spoken with many fallen away Catholics. While in some cases there are complex reasons for there departure, in most cases (in my experience) it is for one of two reasons.
  1. They are ignorent of what the Church TRULY teaches.
  2. They know what the Church teaches and have decided it is too hard. “Lets be intilectualy honest, once saved always saved and faith alone are far more easy. Wrong and deluded, but easy.”😉
 
Some fall away when they start doing something that the church says is immoral. After awhile they stop going to church because, if they are honest in confession, they can’t receive communion. And anyway they think they are right and so the church is wrong. Then they just get farther and farther from the truth.

Others don’t understand the church’s teaching on divorce or annulments and won’t pursue an annulment because they think it means they married in bad faith or the children are illegitimate. So they break with the church when they remarry.

Others weren’t well formed in the faith and a priest makes a bad comment at a sensitive time. One friend left as a child because a priest said her father who died couldn’t go to heaven because he wasn’t Catholic.

One friend left in anger when the mass was changed to English but she came back after 20 years.

Dear Hamba, i think you know i would never EVER leave the Catholic faith.
My faith in Jesus is way to strong for me to just let go and not believe.

isnt the unequally yoked part about a christian and a non-christian? not between denominations?

did the racism of the first priest not concern you?

i think the mention of the child abuse was that even though the priest said that a protestant and a catholic being married was against god laws that apparently the priest own practice of child abuse was not against gods law
