So I am out of Holy Water and I want to get it filled at mass tonight. How do I do that because I don’t want to steal it from the fonts…lol Answer Please

Forgive my simpleness, but I think you can get your own Holy water from the tap. There is no difference between that, and the Holy water at Church. The only important thing is that it must be blessed…

Actual Holy Water has blessed salt added to it. there should be a container at the church for Holy Water that is available for those who want to take some. Just take an empty container with you for filling. Ours in the sacristy, but yours may be elsewhere. Just ask one of the ushers to help you after/before the mass.

Had you considered asking the priest to provide some for you? If a parish has a baptismal font, the water has usually been blessed several times at least since the Easter vigil. As far as I know, no one would object to a devout person taking some home from that font in a suitable container. It is a very common practice. Some parishes also have a combination storage container and font that will serve that purpose as well.

Holy water may or may not have had salt added to it. The current Roman Missal does not call for its necessary addition.

We have a big baptismal pool that I use to get mine from…I am wondering if this might be a bit more special than regular Holy Water, or is it all the same thing? Isn’t there a special Easter Water they use for Baptizing?

I get mine from the holy water fonts at the cathedral. Everyone does. I have seen storage containers with taps and clearly labled Holy Water available at other churches. I don’t think anyone would mind getting some from the fonts.

The blessing of the new water is done at the Easter Vigil when there will be baptisms. If the water is so blessed, a prayer but not a blessing is said over it at other occasions of Baptism during Easter Season. Outside of that time, the Rite of Baptism still calls for the water to be blessed when baptism is to be celebrated. So by the time late summer rolls around, the water of the baptistry may have been blessed several times.

In addition, there is a rite for the blessing of Holy Water found in the Book of Blessings for other occasions.

I can appreciate your pondering whether the water of the Vigil is more special. It might evoke special feelings of devotion.

Still, “Holy Water” is “Holy Water” regardless of the rite by which it was blessed or of the occasion at which it was blessed. Objectively, it’s all special and a very important sacramental of the Church that always recalls the sacrament of Baptism…

I take a bottle from home and get mine from the baptismal font in the back of the church.

Our church has a tank of holy water in the sacristy. You might check there to see if your church does.

Ours is available in the sacristy too, probably less bacteria than water that’s been in the fonts awhile.
