I'm starting to hate democracy. Is this wrong?

They weren’t the voting public. They were not educated or brought up in democracy. They weren’t given the facts of the case. They were a uneducated and downtrodden rabble used by high priests for a political end.
I don’t believe they are a witless crowd. They have a general knowledge about Jesus and Barabas. Remember less than a week before they just celebrated Jesus entering Jerusalem as a triumphant king. The problem really is they looked at Jesus as a political savior. When Jesus appeared again before them in chains, they changed their minds about him. He was not what they thought he was.

If North Korea was ruled by the Pope instead of the Kim family i’d take a chance on it. Besides i’m advocating a benevolent dictatorship if anything. Not a catholic police state
Problem is there is no such thing. Even King David has his sins. Power corrupts.

It’s hard to prove the state of mind of a crowd especially 2,000 years ago. But they were uneducated. Bound by a legalistic religion Under the thumb of the priestly caste. Occupied by a foreign power. Dirt poor by our standards. Had never wielded any political power of their own. etc., etc So hardly political free or able to make free and therefore democratic decisions.

I wish I lived in Vatican City. I’d take my chances with their government.
We would run out of living space quickly. Check out Hungary and its new pro-Church constitution. If things go terribly wrong in the States in my lifetime, I will look for a TLM there to settle by. I can learn German, I’ve seen enough old WWII movies.

It’s true. The best Catholic monarchies all existed in the relatively decentralized feudal times, before the “divine right” kings of the Enlightenment had crushed the nobility and drawn all political power to themselves. Ultimate power seems to be too much to handle for any person except Christ the King.

They are a smart bunch. They don’t have our luxuries but they lived through it. And they don’t have Facebook to kill their brain cells. We’re actually dumber today. The more connected we are, the less reliant we are on our own ability to think and analyze things. That is why punditry is a growing industry in the US.

Even the Holy Roman Emperors were not without scandal.

In my mind they would be similar to the rent-a-mob that we see so often in the news in Pakistan or wherever.

I was referring to the moral corruption which brought down these two civilizations, not what ‘form’ their government took…
Theoretically a proper system of checks and balances should prevent (or at least delay) corruption, moral or otherwise. That is what I believe the founders had in mind, the issue of slavery notwithstanding.

Hate democracy???
Have one specific religion define the legal laws for an entire country of varied people???

Well, I guess if you hate democracy…you can always move to someplace with a totalitarian government like North Korea. But I’d bet you’d start loving democracy pretty darn quick after that.
The Holy Roman Empire and the Papal States weren’t too bad. Even the Austrian Habsburg Empire was pretty decent, until they got dragged into the wrong side of WWI.

Democracy is such a terrible form of government. I feel that it just allows for mob rule and we end up with rules that go against the church. Its sad because I pride myself on being an american and having a good form of government, but after last night i’m just sick. I hate living in a democracy. I wish we lived in a place where the church was the law and the law was the church, or something like that.
Meh, every option has a tradeoff. Church rule would not allow minority dissent and representation as much as a democracy should. And, you can have a risky outcome with a church theocracy, where the church is corrupted by society instead of purifying it.

If you are feeling fed up with democracy that’s probably a sign to take action or at least find people who feel the same and want to do something about it. 🙂

NOT DISSIMILAR FROM THE CHURCH IT IS NOT THE “FORM” BUT THE PEOPLE MISSHAPING IT THAT IS THE PROBLEM.

ALWAYS AND EVERYTIME; EVERYWHERE THIS IS WHAT WE MUST DO:

God First
then and only them may we obey “civil” [an ABUSED TERM HERE] laws.:signofcross:

Firstly, our form of government can best be described as a Polyarchy, not a democracy. In the US the power elite (super wealthy and international corporations) control the money supply and resulting policies. Whether your are pro-Romney or pro-Obama at some level is immaterial…they are simply puppets to the power elite.

The US is very divided. If you go back to the 2004 election results you can find very similar statements in the blogs from people who opposed the Bush presidency.

No matter who is elected to national office, 50% of voters will be unhappy in the US.

I have come to believe that a number of changes should be considered:
  1. A national election commission. Mr Obama seemed to refer to the idea in his acceptance speech. It is unconscionable that individual parties are allowed to skew elections from state to state, and from district to district.
  2. I bipartisan board which sets election precincts. No more gerrymandering.
  3. The two party system is not working. A parliamentary system would allow more parties, and more views to be fairly represented in the legislative process. For example, if there were a Catholic Democratic party (just picking a name), and it represented 10% of the vote in the national election, then it should have proportional representation in the House of Representatives. Leave the senate state-centric to help preserve state’s rights. Representatives in the House would be popularly elected, but not by state. They would be elected by direct national vote, and could be of any party which could qualify for the election. This way, more interests would be represented. Large blocks of the population would not feel that they had no representation in the national government.
  4. Corporations are not people. Change the law. They should have a voice, but not an unlimited voice in politics. They have too much money to be allowed the privilege. They can “talk” louder than any citizen, and have a disproportionate influence on voters.
  5. Reform campaign finance and lobbies laws.
  6. Limit terms. No more Strom Thurmands… or now, it looks like John McCain is going to be the next Strom if he doesn’t retire. The decision makers in the Congress need to leave the Congress regularly for a lot of reasons. There should also be a mandatory retirement age for all federal political offices. FDR was senile at the end. Reagan was senile at the end. McCain is starting to show signs. Thurmand was humored when he should have been expelled for medical reasons.
I think that these ideas should be carefully considered, as they might restore some sanity to US politics.

And why would you be learning German instead of Hungarian? You are time-traveling back to the time of the Austro-Hungarian empire? 😛

Best of luck to you in today’s Hungary, where 90+% of the country speaks Hungarian and virtually none but the oldest speak German or passable Russian (like many countries previously allied with the USSR, they dropped that like a hot potato following the revolutions of 1989-1990). Hungarian is non-Indo European, and its closest relatives in family to which it belongs (Uralic – Finnish, Estonian, and several minority languages of Finland and Russia) are sufficiently separated from it both linguistically and geographically so as to make it essentially a language isolate in its neck of the woods (surrounded as it is by Slavic and Romance languages, both of which are Indo-European). There are Hungarian minorities in Slovakia, Serbia, and Romania, but outside of those areas, Hungarian is virtually useless if you are not living in Hungary proper.

Not to mention that it is notoriously complicated and difficult to learn, from the point of view of those who are used to Indo-European languages like English, German, French, Dutch, Russian, etc.

Do you really trust the Church to govern society with fairness and justice? Have you not been paying attention to all the cover-ups and scandals of the past few decades?

But if you still want a theocracy, you might try Iran.

Democracy favors the majority. If a majority of voters disagree with you on the candidates and issues, then you’re going to dislike democracy. Would democracy be a better form of government if we had elected Mitt Romney instead of Barack Obama? Plato had it right: democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the other forms of government.

I think it was Churchill that said it
House of Commons, 11 November 1947: Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…
The thing about people is: if you show them that something is on their interest they will do it. So all we have to do is show enough people that attaining the kingdom is in their interest. Then you will find that democracy is a winner.
