In this case, didn’t a Catholic organization sell the property? If the property weren’t sold, this wouldn’t have happened…

My thoughts exactly. 👍

If France were uniformly consistent in applying its “secular” ideals, there would be no problem.

It’s actually questionable if Holy Mass is being performed. However those performing it are claiming to be Catholic despite the Diocese warning Catholics not to attend and that they’re not holding valid mass.

The same thing would have happened if a mosque had been sold to a secular buyer as well. Remember it was the Church that sold this particular church building to a secular buyer who plans to demolish it. If the congregation had an issue it was best raised with the diocese, not the rightful owner of this now deconsecrated church building.

From what I have gathered, in France the government owns all religious buildings. The revolution and its fruits :rolleyes:

As I understand it, the government only owns churches opened before 1915. This church was not.

Here’s a more in depth article on the incident. It appears the church is owned by the Association of Catholic and Apostolic Chapels. The purchased the building in 2012 from the Gallacian Church, a non Vatican sanctioned group. It was shut down in April 2015 and slated to be demolished in October 2015, but this congregation and priest who were part of the Church that sold the building, broke in through a bricked up door and began squatting on the site which delayed the demolition. The courts ordered the trespassers out in January 2016 and that removal was finally carried out in this event which has been since sensationalized.

The more we hear about this, the more it seems the priest and his congregation were solidly in the wrong here. They were in violation of property rights, a court order, and were even running counter to their own Church’s wishes when the Gallacian church sold the property.

Is the Association part of the diocese or somehow under the authority of the Church? I’m just wondering whether the bishop made any statements when all of this is happening…

From what I’m gathering, this Gallacian Church that the trespassing congregation are members of, is not in good standing with the Vatican. So I doubt the diocese would have commented if that were the case.

Looking at what actually was going on, I suspect it was also the opinion of the bishop. People who run on emotion eventually run amok. And it makes for such delicious press!

It was no longer a place of worship, and had not been one for some time. And at least theoretically, the priest knew it, but chose to ignore reality and impose his emotional take on the matter.

I file this under the heading of “Don’t confuse me with the facts! I already have my mind made up!”

And it is not my opinion - it was the legal opinion.

It was not their place of worship to protect.

This is no different than if some Protestant denomination’s congregation started squatting in your local Catholic Parish church building tomorrow preventing your parish from demolishing the building and blocking your parish’s redevelopment of the site.

It made for some great pictures and sensationalist headlines. But facts are, this Gallacian Church the congregation are members of is not in good standing with Rome. It sold this church building 4 years ago. The building was closed well over a year ago by the legal owners. It was slated to be demolished and redeveloped by the owners almost a year ago. And this congregation broke and entered, has been trespassing and has been squatting since October. And has been doing so in violation of a court order to vacate since January. This is not their church building and has not been for 4 years.
