Vatican forgives John Lennon for Jesus quip

Wow, I wish they would have done this years ago.
When I was in 2nd grade, the principal at my school who happened to be a Southern Baptist, forbade me to bring my Beatles lunch box to school.
He claimed they were the sign of the devil.
My mom had to go to the school and fight for my right to bring my lunch box to school. :extrahappy: [SIGN]Thanks mom ![/SIGN]

In those days, comments like that shocked people. If he would have said it today, I don’t think there would have been much notice.

Jesus was up there in the top Ten for famous people. I don’t know if you could call him the most famous until everyone knows who he is.
There are plenty of people still on this earth who don’t know about Jesus.

Always huge Beatles (and John Lennon). If I am not mistaken, I believe Lennon made that statement not out of bragging or ego, but out of amazement that so many people were putting their popularity over that of our Lord Jesus Christ. My opinion, but think he was taken out of context and the media spun it the way they wanted…

The Vatican does not “forgive” Lennon for anything because there isn’t anything to forgive. All this is is a piece about the Vatican view toward what Lennon said 40 years ago. Of course, the MSM can’t really seem to report anything accurately. If you read the article there isn’t anything by a Vatican spokesman that says “Lennon is forgiven” or anything even close. It is **** like this that causes people (especially non Catholics) to think that the Church is stuck in a rut from centuries ago.

the news media has a hard job. Just like any where else, though, there are some people in the industry that want things dicey all the time. They put inflammatory soundbites on their head lines to get noticed. People DO notice and then are disappointed when they realize that it is just a bunch of hokey. “Darn, just wasted another couple of minutes of my life on this stuff.”

This is not forgiveness but an assessment of a particular remark. The work of the Beatles was significant and inspirational to many. I was there as it happened.

But the words to songs Mr. Lennon wrote later show he had changed his mind about some things. “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?,” and “Imagine,” which was an atheist and Communist poem set to music. Mr. Lennon abandoned the past and embraced a hedonistic Hippie mind set. At the time, aside from their peace symbols and anti-war stance, the Hippies were for illegal and dangerous drugs, fornication and profanity.

We are still seeing the rotten fruit today.

Peace,
Ed

I couldn’t agree with you more. I was an avowed Beatle fan for over 20 years and I too was duped by their “magic.” This was when I was lost. My conversion back to the Fullness of Truth in 1998 finally opened my eyes

We were at the Vienna Boys Choir concert at Corpus Christi Cathedral two weeks age and guess what was about to be played from the risers erected in the Sanctuary?

John Lennon’s athiest, Marxist anthem, Imagine…I kid you not.

I believe there was an objection raised at intermission and thanks to the wisdom and prudence of the director of the Cathedral Choir, this deeply troubling song was passed over, Thank God.

The abomination of this near miss still rips at my heart—Imagining there is no heaven and no religion as you gaze above heads of the twenty five innocent voices to a crowned Jesus Christ surrounded by Mary and saints in the apse that used to contain the Holy of Holies (now a side chapel).

I haven’t read the article yet, and I will withold full comment until I do, but celebrating 40 years of the notorious White Album has me extremely concerned.

Aleister Crowley (the outspoken satanist) was Sgt. Pepper and the rest is pop history.

I ask all readers to do the research…it will shock you to back to reality. Just GOOGLE Crowley, Beatles. I’ll get you started…

Even if one-tenth of what is portrayed in this site is valid, it is incrimination enough.

The heresy of Modernism (pop culture) and the New Age have crossed paths and are now upon us. It is definitively ant-Christ.

Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll?

…the anti-Trinity.

Does anyone have a transcript…or a link to the entire article in L’Osservatore Romano?

Good grief. That site is nothing but bogus garbage. John Lennon didn’t believe in anything enough to be moved by it. While I personally think that Imagine is one of the worst songs that Lennon ever wrote I would hardly call Lennon a Marxist. How can one be a Marxist when they are worth a couple of hundred million dollars?!?!?

And what makes the White Album notorious??? If I had $5 for every time I’ve heard it I could retire tomorrow!!!

And this:
Aleister Crowley (the outspoken satanist) was Sgt. Pepper and the rest is pop history.
What??? Much of Sgt. Pepper was largely McCartney’s creation. It’s just music…nothing notorious about it. Would you say the same about the works of Lewis Carrol?

Oh, for goodness sake! “Popular culture” has been around since Mozart’s time. Are you trying to tell me that Beethoven, Stephen Foster and George Gershwin are “anti-Christs?!?!?” And there is no such thing as a “modernist” movement. It is a term that defies definition. John Lennon sounds like a conservative compared to some of the politicians in power today.

Agree with you Tim…There is certainly a lot of good in the Beatles. I saw Paul M. (in concert) couple years ago and he even mentioned his Catholic roots to the audience.

John L. certainly did his own thing, but at least he pushed for peace when that wasn’t the most popular stand.

Yea, Simon, I believe I’ve seen an interview with him somewhere where he said “mum was a Catholic.” Was in on the Anthology? I’m not sure but I do know that I’ve spent many, many hours listening to The Beatles. Anti-Christs they certainly were not!
