IMO... It's better to be Protestant, but tell me why it's better to be Catholic

I’m not an expert of Catholic doctrine, so please correct me. It is my understanding that through baptism, and person receives initial justification and is right with God. Through the reality of this life, we sin as Christians. Therefore, the initial justification can be lost depending of the kind of sin committed (venial or mortal). Through the various sacraments dispense by the church, a Christian can be strengthened, forgiven, etc regaining the initial justification that could be lost.*** How do you know if you lost your initial justification?*** I believe final justification is conditional of becoming righteous or sins have been purged from the Christian.*** Therefore, purgatory is needed to purge sins that have not been removed in this life.*** The biggest difference IMO between our understanding of justification is being justified by the righeousness of Christ alone (alien righteousness) verse being justified by being made completly righteous (personal righteousness gained through the merits of Christ applied - transformation). My goal is to be able to understand and post the Catholic way of salvation with complete accuracy. Could you please try to answer my question now?
You know you are separated from God when you commit mortal sin(deadly).

TEMPORAL PUNISHMENT OF SIN

Sin has a double consequence, every sin grave or even venial sin entails an unhealthy attachment to us which must be purified.
Yes, we have been for given when we repent of our sin and are restored to communion with God, but temporal punishment remains, and we must strive to accept temporal punishment as a grace to do good and 'put off the oldman completely and put on the “new man”. This is how we achieve holiness.

This unhealthy attachment to sin is either purified in this life on earth or after death in the state called Purgatory. This purification frees one from what is called temporal punishment of sin.
These two punishments must not be conceived of as any kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin.

Again, temporal punishment due to sin whose guilt has already been paid for by Jesus, Catholics believe is a grace from God to help us to become better Christians by purification so as to achieve the holiness needed to enter the joy of heaven.

I hope this helps you futher to understand the process of Justification and Salvation,
God bless and give you understanding and peace as you discover more of the complete Truth.;):)Carlan

He could be a Calvinist where he believes the elect have no choice but to respond to the irresistible grace of God. 🤷

Unbiblically abolishing the priesthood is the real issue about confession. If Protestants are content with confessing to God only, then that is their tradition. If they are not going to be Catholic, it shouldn’t be an issue, since we cannot impose this on non-Catholics. They have no right criticizing our Sacred Tradition (that came from Jesus and the Apostles) and grandstanding a man-made unbiblical tradition of confessing to God only. Confess to God, fine, but the Bible does not teach to confess to God only.

This does not mean that one cannot receive forgiveness by confessing to God only. Catholics do it too as part of preparation for confession. Confessing to God only and you miss out on the benfits that go with being absolved. But if one is not Catholic it shouldn’t be an issue; they have no decision to make.

We are called to be interiorily transformed so we can be God’s sons and daughters, sharing in His very divine life. The grace we receive from the sacraments helps us to be divinely affiliated, we become changed from the inside. The Protestant, on the other hand, is a totally depraved snow covered poop pile, (to paraphrase Luther and Calvin) and salvation is a free ticket.

Again, it was the reformers who made a new tradition of abolishing the sacrament of Reconciliation, because they unbiblically abolished the New Testament priesthood.

I’ll take being *interiorly transformed, full of grace and justified by moral certitude *over being a ‘totally depraved snow covered poop pile’ any day.

For a list of benefits that Protestants miss out on, see
beginningcatholic.com/sacrament-of-reconciliation.html

John 20:21 - before He grants them the authority to forgive sins, Jesus says to the apostles, “as the Father sent me, so I send you.” As Christ was sent by the Father to forgive sins, so Christ sends the apostles and their successors forgive sins.

John 20:22 - the Lord “breathes” on the apostles, and then gives them the power to forgive and retain sins. The only other moment in Scripture where God breathes on man is in Gen. 2:7, when the Lord “breathes” divine life into man. When this happens, a significant transformation takes place.
John 20:23 - Jesus says, “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” In order for the apostles to exercise this gift of forgiving sins, the penitents must orally confess their sins to them because the apostles are not mind readers. The text makes this very clear.

James 5:16 - James clearly teaches us that we must “confess our sins to one another,” not just privately to God. James 5:16 must be read in the context of James 5:14-15, which is referring to the healing power (both physical and spiritual) of the priests of the Church. Hence, when James says “therefore” in verse 16, he must be referring to the men he was writing about in verses 14 and 15 – these men are the ordained priests of the Church, to whom we must confess our sins.

Acts 19:18 - many came to orally confess sins and divulge their sinful practices. Oral confession was the practice of the early Church just as it is today.

If Protestants can’t leave Catholics alone on the issue of confession since it is not part of their faith tradition, then they must be prepared to have their errors of ommission explained to them. Otherwise, they should back off.

Thanks for explaining this Truth so well, especially for the dissenting Catholics amongst us,:)God bless, Carlan

Who are the dissenting Catholics?

Religion: Catholic loyal to the Holy See

Just because I fully accept non-Catholics as brothers and sisters in Christ doesn’t make me dissenting…does it? 🙂

Not as long as you agree that they are not to receive the Eucharist

I don’t recall mentioning names, Steve, You must know there could be many thousand out there reading Catholic Answers and with so many, these days ,believing in moral relativism there could be a few who would be in need of admonishing .I am no one’s judge, but we are given to recognise sin.:)God bless and enlighten us all, Carlan

Ah…okay. Moral relativism is a scourge of today’s society. No argument there! 🙂

IMO…it’s better to be Protestant, but tell me why it’s better to be Catholic. But remember, Catholics and Protestants are one in Christ for those who actually are known by God through Christ. Please try to keep your responses grounded in official Catholic teaching. I’ll start:
  1. It’s better to be Protestant because historic Protestant theology rest in the finished work of Christ for our eternal standing before God, We are justified by the person and work of Jesus Christ who earned our complete forgiveness and reconciliation for us, We are saved from God to God, and for God on the basis of the work of Jesus Christ. Therefore, historic Protestant theology teaches that we have eternal peace with God because of the merit of Jesus Christ.
uh… and how does the Catholic church differ in teaching from this? You are preaching to the choir.
peace rsh

I know there are others who identify as being a brown bag happy face Christians out there in Internet land, calling for unity between Christians who love the Lord Jesus Christ! I hope others will continue to put off the old man, and putting on the new man… in loving one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. It is beneficial to listen to the other person’s persective from another Christian tradition, but understanding that we are really One in Christ is a greater call than debating our differences. If the Apostle Paul knew in part, then we all know in part. 🙂

Or he could be a very good Christian person who love our Savior Jesus Christ.:clapping:
tweetmom, Be carful you know this is place that people debate on,and if you are not carful you may tell some one more then ONE sentence,Isee you have over 3,000 post do you ever talk to any one.or just post 4or 5 words,They will not banne you if you talk to some one.LOL

I’m just a Christian who once was blind and now I see in part. Since God is an Infinite God, we only know a portion about Him since we are finite creatures still fighting what remains in our sin nature. Therefore, I enjoy learning about our Triune God from various Christian traditions. What is unique about the Orthodox churches in which an Orthodox Christian would like to share?

If you go back on most of your post there are more one liners than anything. I do not care if you write 1 word or a page long. Yes I do talk to a lot of people here, just not argue. God Bless
