BAS: We have to bear in mind that the Church is not in our hands, and not even in the hands of the Pope, but in the almighty hands of Christ, and therefore we cannot say that all this is now too late to stop the damage. We can also apply the following affirmation of Saint Paul to our situation inside the Church: “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Rom. 5:20). God had permitted this current extraordinary doctrinal and moral confusion in the Church for the aim that, after this crisis, the truth will shine brighter and the Church will become spiritually more beautiful, especially in the married couples, in the families and in the popes.

How insulting and prejudiced a way to speak about a prelate of the church and an entire country…
 
Bishop Schneider is not merely giving “personal opinions” either…he is enunciating timeless Catholic teaching.
 
“Backwater city” isn’t a fact. It’s you’re prejudiced opinion, and prejudiced opinions are beneath the dignity of a deacon to be posting.
 
There is nothing in what Bishop Schneider said that conflicts with perennial Catholic teaching.
 
Strange, my “opinion” can be verified by reading any number of standard manuals of moral theology.
 
The Pope does not have the authority to change perennial Catholic teaching.

Perhaps “backwater diocese” or “backwater see” would be more accurate then :).

Regardless, the traditionalist community has set up His Lordship as some sort of St Athanasius for our time, opposing the new Arian heresy. Even if we presume that His Holiness is in error, the comparison strikes me as troubling.

I agree. It’s the usual ignominious ad hominem attack. Kind of like how the Jews attacked Christ being from backwater Nazareth.
 
Schneider and a few other bishops are among the “heroes” voicing open opposition to the Holy Father.
 
The statement these now 7 bishops have signed simply affirms perennial Catholic teaching. How that somehow = “open opposition to the Holy Father” is unclear.

KMG it is rather simple to understand. The defense proferred by the supporters of AL is the same as that used by most progressive groups. Disparage and ridicule the opposition. Question their validity, question their ethics and reasoning, and if all else fails attack, attack, attack.
I find the level of vitriol leveled at the four Cardinals, and now at these Bishops to be very telling. And not in a good way. Somewhat Stalinesque in my humble opinion.
 
Telling but not necessarily surprising. My only question is what took him so long to do this, i.e. publicly make a statement along these lines. I ironically agree to some extent that the ‘hero’ of Catholic orthodoxy routine is a bit overdone. Some of that so-called heroism might come just from the fact that he has the nerve to so plainly and openly assert his orthodoxy. Not territory for the fainthearted these days.

Without any knowledge, my guess would be the Letter to the Argentine Bishops was the catalyst for this.
