Impossible Burger?

But… if I happened to be traveling with a group of people on a day of abstinence and they stopped at a Burger King to eat, then yes, I would order either an Impossible Burger or the fish.
I was thinking of a scenario similar to that. Business meetings and whatnot where everyone is ordering from the same place. The impossible burger could be an option. I personally don’t like the fish sandwiches.

You could buy just the patties as well in the supermarket. Impossible burger and beyond burger are both brands available. I could see those being an option for people who need to consume fewer carbs.

It’s basically is high protein vegetable patty with beets for color and savory ingredients like ground mushroom and soy.

It’s basically a veggie burger but the texture is similar to beef. While I normally don’t like veggie burgers, I can eat this and the texture is pretty good.

It does not violate the letter of the law, so technically it would be OK.

HOWEVER, my PERSONAL opinion on the matter is this:
  • I would avoid eating them on Fridays because I consider it to be a “loophole.” I would only buy one if it was the only meatless option I could find to eat.
Reason for my opinion:

The Friday penance is supposed to be a penance. People can say all they want about the fish/lobster thing, but the truth is that for many of us not eating meat on Fridays is a penance. For many of us, we have to go out of our way to eat seafood, seafood is simply just not as widely available for many of us.

In Western society, chicken, pork, turkey, beef, lamb, etc are everywhere. Ask a vegan or vegetarian how difficult it is a good selection of meatless options at many restaurants.

Also, what the Church classifies as meat is much more affordable than lobster, shrimp, & most fish. Point is, meat is a staple in the diet of most people. So giving it up is a sacrifice.

Therefore, IN MY OPINION, the Impossible Burger (and other Impossible products) are loopholes that MAY (for some people) interfere with or subtract from the penitential purpose of abstaining from meat during Fridays in Lent

NOTE: I feel the very same way about fish frys… I think they run the risk of subtracting from the penitential purpose as well.

God bless

IMHO Eating the impossible burger on a day of abstinence violates the spirit of the law, but not the letter of the law.
