Hi kage_ar, the Catechism is available online, no need to buy it.

Or do you think that there is something wrong with the online version?

Thanks Just Lurking for noting that the Church does care enough to define the terms used in Church teachings and to point out that the definitions are revised to keep up with knowledge of the times.

For those of you who can to see it, others, not me, are posting that the teachings of the Church are being refined to reflect the increased understanding of the world that mankind acquires. If you folks are really awake you might also notice that at least one other person has stated that impotence, in the eyes of the Church, used to mean sterility and to some extent still does.

I am not interested in trying to say anything about what is the teachings if the Church on this point, but it would be absurd for the Church to tell someone they cannot marry because the guy cannot have an erection and his girlfriend is pregnant with his child.

As another issue. This is a logic point.

Suppose you have a if b and c are true. Do you have a if b is false and c is true? Or if b or c is false can you never have a?

Now b is sterility, c is not having an erection, a is marriage.

If you were the priest that was advising the couple I mentioned what would you advise them to do?

1ke, thanks, I very much expected you to respond the way you did. It is clear you have a great knowledge of the Catechism and other resources. Some of you demonstrate a great understanding of the history and teachings of the Church.

But, you do not demonstrate a great understanding of the Church, or its mission, or what Jesus Christ was all about. The Church is an institution with the purpose of helping people love God. Jesus demonstrated His Divine anger at people in His time that used the teachings of the Jewish faith to make it difficult for people to love God.

Yes, the teachings of the Church are good. But they must be used with love and not as a collection of law. That is why priests encourage people who haven’t gone to church in years to come back and receive communion without going to Confession. I hope you all realize that. Some people understand that when you sit down and talk to someone and you inform them of all the teachings of the Church they do not follow you are discouraging them from continuing to go to the Church. So they go elsewhere.

Also, theology is not limited to the written teachings of the Church. You all need to pay attention at Mass sometimes. Mass is a long way from what is required in the writings of the Church. Now Mass has what is required, but often it has much more as well. So does our faith. When you only discuss what was written down by the organized Church you miss all the extras that is also very much the Church.

Now I don’t mean to imply that any of you have a problem with your relationship to God, or the Church. What I will observe, not from your behavior, but your writings, this that you do lack an understanding of the Church.

We all seek God and I hope you all find God in whatever way He chooses to reveal Himself to you.
Impotence in the eyes of the Church does NOT mean sterility.
Impotence in the case of a man means he cannot achieve an erection. Impotence in the case of a woman means the vaginal opening is so small that penetration is impossible. In both cases if this is known prior to a marriage and it is untreatable and permanent then marriage is forbidden.
Sterility (infertility) on the other hand is not a bar to marriage.

That is why priests encourage people who haven’t gone to church in years to come back and receive communion without going to Confession.
Any priest who does so is committing a grave sin himself, and he is accountable to God on judgment day for telling someone that-- just like the rest of us are accountable for our actions and what information or misinformation we tell others that they may act on.

His “compassion” is a **false **compassion if he leads others to sin-- and woe to him on judgment day. Christ already said woe to the man who causes any of his little ones to sin, it is better they have a millstone tied around their necks and be drowned in the sea. Matthew 18:6-9. That’s the real Jesus, not this fake “warm-fuzzy” Jesus who doesn’t care what we do or whether we sin. You have made that Jesus up to present to people.

Larry, you have a lot of strange ideas. I am sorry that you received such poor instruction and such misinformation in place of solid catechesis. The Catechism and Canon Law are there for you to read, just like everyone else. I hope you will stop spreading falsehoods regarding what the Church teaches on this board. Your examples of various priests who *fail *to follow that teaching are not examples anyone should follow.

There is no point in discussing anything with you. It seems you only want to hear your own voice, not that of the Holy Mother Church.

. . . That is why priests encourage people who haven’t gone to church in years to come back and receive communion without going to Confession.
. . . you do lack an understanding of the Church.
If there is any lack of understanding, it is with the priest that would not FIRST counsel confession.

Some claim to hold a higher regard for the “spririt of the law” than the “letter of the law”, so to speak, and claim to do so out of love. But when that spirit goes against the very clear teachings of the Church, as referenced in ke’s post #90 above, for example, what spirit is that, do you suppose?

You folks certainly have you opinions.

Fortunately, you have no authority to teach. It has always been my experience in the Church that the Church is not a Church of laws, but of God. I don’t know how much you have actually talked to a priest about the Church, priests at least do have some authority, but I find it entirely predictable that you say a priest is a bad boy if he doesn’t support you.

How sad it would be if someone, seeking to join the Catholic Church, actually was influenced by your postings and did not join the Church. Satan often uses the truth to mislead people, make very sure you are not doing Satan’s work instead of God’s.

I suspect you belong to a sect in the Church that, while tolerated by Rome, represents a very small number of Catholics. I know people that may very well have your intolerant view of our Faith. It is amazing what their family thinks of them, and it isn’t nice. I urge you to climb out of your internet hole and actually participate in a Church. Help real actual people, sinners that have never heard of the Catechism, or Canon Law. In my work in the St. Vincent de Paul organization I learned something about the life of Jesus. Jesus gave miracles to people freely. He didn’t demand anything from them first, or ever. Wow, it is hard to do that sometimes. Just to by diapers for the 27th time that year for a mother that is truly not living the Christian life without judging her and knowing the 28th time will be next week. What would you do for her?

Or how about praying for a young woman who has cancer and may die. Yes, pray for her, but also find a way to help her and those she will leave behind. Moral theology in this web site seems to be about the Laws of the Church, fine. Do you even understand that the Church seeks to help troubled teenagers, men whose wives have left them, and the young child whose mother has just died? I wonder if spending so much time with this web site isn’t immoral in and of itself. There are real people that need to be helped.

By seeing the Church only through the Catechism and Canon Law you bring shame to our Church. The part of the Catholic Church that believes as you do is very small. Why don’t you join the mainstream Church? It isn’t bad. Who knows, you may discover God in ways you never thought of. Do you really think the mainstream Church is corrupt?

Larry,

I just wanted to say thank you. I’m sure there are many of us that share your views.

Where did this nonsense come from. Are you so self righteous that you think you know better than everyone else. So self righteous that you are saying all forum members bring shame to the Church. Well I hope you don’t intend to receive Communion this Sunday.
This thread is about impotence.
Do you accept the church teaching that impotence is a bar to marriage. YES or NO!!

.
As long as it is an official verson (vatican.va, scborremo, etc.) and you READ it, study it, get it into your soul - it is a good thing!

My greatest condolences to any suffering from impotence. I will pray for you.

You should go see a doctor. Perhaps he can prescribe a penis pump or other natural treatment.

Best of luck.

There are numerous treatments for impotence. It is only permanent and absolutely irreversible impotence which is known prior to marriage that is an impediment to marriage. The reason is simple. A man and woman pledge themselves to each other for life, with the intent of being open to life by completing the marital act in a unitive and potentially life giving manner. It is called the marital act because it belongs to the essence of marriage. Permanent and antecedent inability to perform the marital act means no marriage can occur. It would be like saying, I want to play in the band but I cannot, through no fault of my own, ever play an instrument.

(Off topic, but same sex couples also can not accomplish the marital act, and so marriage is not possible.)

Temporary impotence, impotence which develops later in the marriage, impotence which is treatable–none of those are an impediment to marriage.

Please have a look at the following points regarding impotence:
**
What is Sexual Dysfunction?**

Generally known as Impotence, sexual dysfunction happens in men, when he is unable to attain satisfactory erections during his sexual intercourse. Sexual dysfunction can also happen in females. Unable to attain arousal, sexual dysfunction is quite prominent even in females.

What leads to sexual dysfunction in men?

Impotence may happen in men due to the lack of blood circulation in the penile region. The enzyme Phosphodiesterase 5 prohibits the blood supply to male reproductive organ, thus leading to soft erections. This hampers their sexual life and reduces the stamina to achieve orgasms in men. As per a study it has been found that around 31 percent of men have difficulty in achieving long lasting and strong erections.
**
What leads to sexual dysfunction in females?**

Change in hormone, stress, following the same sexual routines and factors that may remind her of her traumatic sexual encounter may lead to lack of sexual interest, lessens the ability to get aroused and absence of attaining orgasm respectively, leads to sexual dysfunction in females.

What are antipsychotic drugs? What do they treat?

Generally known as Neuroleptic anti psychotic drugs have a tranquilizing agent, which helps in controlling the mental and physical behavior of an individual. The word neuroleptic means treatment for the central nervous system of one’s body. The treatment on fear, anxiety, distress and even during illusions, antipsychotic drugs is preferred by psychiatrists to treat on such patients.
