Not true.See this thread from Ask an Apologist. It is unnecessary for a Catholic to throw out a Protestant Bible. A Catholic should have a Catholic Bible with all the books, but no Bibles need to be discarded. I have a KJV that has all the books (actually 2 of them). I own the 1611 edition and a KJV with Apocrypha (which also has 3 books that the Orthodox recognize but Catholics do not).
Interesting… I wasn’t aware of this… I assume it doesn’t apply to “traditional” Protestant bible sources like the KJ versions that DO include the additional books though???Not true.
(From the Catechism of Saint Pope Pius X)
32 Q: What should a Christian do who has been given a Bible by a Protestant or by an agent of the Protestants?
A: A Christian to whom a Bible has been offered by a Protestant or an agent of the Protestants should reject it with disgust, because it is forbidden by the Church. If it was accepted by inadvertence, it must be burnt as soon as possible or handed in to the Parish Priest.
33 Q: Why does the Church forbid Protestant Bibles?
A: The Church forbids Protestant Bibles because, either they have been altered and contain errors, or not having her approbation and footnotes explaining the obscure meanings, they may be harmful to the Faith. It is for that same reason that the Church even forbids translations of the Holy Scriptures already approved by her which have been reprinted without the footnotes approved by her.
Check out this article by Jimmy Akin about choosing a Bible translation.Interesting… I wasn’t aware of this… I assume it doesn’t apply to “traditional” Protestant bible sources like the KJ versions that DO include the additional books though???
I’d like to add that I have been informed they do exist… although I dont have a copy![]()
Are you happy with the New Jerusalem Bible’s translation of Genesis 1:2 as “divine wind” instead of Spirit of God?THanks but I’m happy with my RSV NJB
And I just checked the Vulgate. St Jerome says, “spiritus dei”, which is literally, “breeze of [from] God”. Can’t beat St Jerome!!Yup Sure am ! Just as I am happy with my NEV my RSV,NJB,NIV KJV NASB DRV my LXX and all my other bible translation.Only one I’d say is really corrupt would be JW’s New World Translation. Absolute ****- deliberate in the errors they made- hiding the fact from the public that no real greek or hebrew scholars even worked on it. as far as the genesis quote my rsv says"wind of God sweeping over the earth"Divine wind in NJB is not that much different again it is the LXX that has that meaning.in herew text the word is"ruah" which can mean spirit, wind or breath- similar to Greek pnuema (ruah means air in motion) If you exegete it and go from literist to literal we see that “water” is a symbol for chaos- so when itsays the wind of God or Divine wind it means chaos was never beyond God’s power.Light over comes dark all that good stuff.
I have seen one Latin translation tool use breeze, but the Latin “spiritus” I think more often means breath, breathing, soul, life, or air. Also spirit (Spiritus Sancti). I would use “aura” for breeze. And I just checked the Vulgate. St Jerome says, “spiritus dei”, which is literally, “breeze of [from] God”. Can’t beat St Jerome!!
I just checked as many online latin translators as I could find, and they all said “breath, breathing, life, spirit”. None said “breeze”.And I just checked the Vulgate. St Jerome says, “spiritus dei”, which is literally, “breeze of [from] God”…
because “ruah” from MT (hebrew) can mean wind breath or spirit.LXX(greek) pneuma has similar meaning-wind breath or spirit.Spirit of God and Divine Wind are not that far apart.
No, I have to agree with anyone who states that the New American Catholic Bible is bad news because of its commentary in its footnotes, and introductions etc, is to often either heretical or borders on herasy. These so Called scholars are not going over more authentic or truer piece of payri, they are arriving at their conclusions, by denying miracles of Christ, by reaching the conclusions that gospels were not written until after the death of apostles, by denying what church fathers stated as to who wrote the gospels. If Mathew didn’t write Mathew and other gospels were not written by their authors than we begin to have ever greater problem in claim authenticiy of the writings at all. When these so called scholars deny the sacred tradion of the church we no longer have a leg to stand on. Father Corpi will tell you the same things on EWTn. The New American is not good.THanks but I’m happy with my RSV NJB and parallels which contain DRV. .whether Matthew wrote “matthew” or not to me is really not important I know it was inspired.Just like Isaiah is thought to be written at three different times by different people or groups does not devalue it in any manner. It is still true, inspired, & holy.It is a needless controversy. The message is more important then the messenger. Origen disputed Hebrews -james was disputed my origen & eusebius as of uncertain pedigree- are they not inspired? As for translations neither KJV or DRV are be all and end all. and each generation translates it so it is more understandable to the next.Language can make a difference as to whether a person grasps what is being said or not.No translation is flawless.Only the Word is.That’s why bible translaters pour over Codices, targums manuscripts and any little piece of papyri that might be a more authentic and truer- it is not a job I would want. This may help: tanbooks.com/audio/wbsyr.pdfHi All
I am a non-practicing Catholic who has very recently returned to the church(this past Saturday evening was my first Mass in many years).
I am trying to learn as much as I can about my faith, but am ashamed to say that I don’t own a Catholic Bible. The only one we have in the house is a King James version someone picked up at used book sale long ago.
Could someone please recommend a version that would not cost too much?..I am currently unemployed and money is a little tight right now.
