In Need Of A Bible

I am a protestant looking for a Catholic Bible. Amazon.com has paperback versions- cheap! In D-R, RSV and NAB. My question is WHAT IS ARE ST. JOSEPH AND ST. IGNATIUS BIBLES??? THEY COME IN ALL VERSIONS.

The Ignatius Bible (from Ignatius Press) comes in two versions. The original is the RSV-Catholic Edition. The other is the Second Edition of same. The Second Edition modernizes some archaic language, but neither bible uses inclusive language.

St. Joseph bibles are ordinary NABs. I believe they often contain additional study helps or illustrations. The 1970 NAB does not use inclusive language. Those after 1985 (revised New Testament) do. Editions after 1991 contain the revised Psalms, which contain so much inclusive language, the Vatican required new translations to be made for use in the Mass lectionary. “St. Joseph” here is sort of like a brand name. The name, as used on bibles and missals, is owned by The Catholic Book Publishing Company. They have been around a long time so you will see “St. Joseph” attached to some older Confraternity bibles on Ebay.

I always buy a second hand Bible at a used book store. Not really because they are so much cheaper but I enjoy seeing what someone else has underlined or highlighted.
No question that the Knox translation is the most beautiful and almost impossible to put down because of its style.

No, I have to agree with anyone who states that the New American Catholic Bible is bad news because of its commentary in its footnotes, and introductions etc, is to often either heretical or borders on herasy.

There is a Bible I have seen online & I looked at it, in Barnes & Noble, which does not have the same notes as other NABs that I have seen. It is the Catholic Answer Bible, softcover ( at least the one I saw), with lots of information about the Catholic Church, and it does not aapear to have the commentary which so many object to.
I am Methodist, but I have to add my agreement about some of the notes…can’t speak to all. (Haven’t read them!!)…Its not the translation, its the strange notes.
The Catholic Answer Bible is the 1st NAB I have seen that looked to be minus the very liberal commentary…

Mind you, I still remember the advice I got, many years ago: “The Bible is inspired; the notes are not”. Works for any Bible I have ever read!

I’ve been thinking lately about the whole HUGE debate (especially here on CAF) about Bible Translations and here’s what I think. Zooey, I agree with you on the comment I quoted above. Also, I would like to add that as long as we as Catholics are true to our faith and we know our faith well, its not going to matter which Bible translation we read. Some people here are beginning to sound like the KJV onlyists in many Protestant churches, except here is is D-R onlyists and RSV-CE onlyists. Please don’t misunderstand me, I LOVE both those versions and use the RSV most of the time, but I also see think that any of the Catholic approved translations, whether they have been approved for use in the liturgy or just for personal devotion, are fine by me. And yes that even includes the NJB, NAB, and the NRSV.

I apologize if I offended anyone with my comments but this is something that I had to get off my chest. You may think I’m sounding a bit Protestant when I say this, but the Bible is the BIBLE. THE WORD OF GOD. PERIOD. With it and our Catholic Faith and Tradition, I don’t think its going to matter what translation it is that you are reading from, just the fact that you read it!!

Again, sorry if I offend anyone. This is just my honest opinion.

But thats not to say I’m a Douay Rheims salesman! It’s just the best traditional Catholic translation, thats agiven in most poster’s opinions here, including mine.
