"In North Carolina, gay man fired for marrying partner

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The past five months have been eventful for Steav Bates-Congdon.

First he got married. Then he got fired.

The popular music director at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in south Charlotte lost his job last month for marrying his longtime partner in New York, one of seven states to recognize same-sex marriages. "…

I applaud this move by St. Gabriel’s and I will be praying for their congregation. I am in the Diocese of Charlotte myself, and I am extremely proud of our Bishop, Peter Jugis. He is conservative, orthodox, and was actually born and raised in Charlotte. My God bless him and our diocese!

👍👍

I do not think he should have been fired. He can sue for wrongful dismissal.

My only gripe is that it appears he was openly practicing homosexuality from the beginning, his partner was always around and everyone knew, but it was ok until they got “married”. The behavior was equally sinful before the “marriage”, so why was it only frowned on after they legally sealed it?

In the US churches can discriminate on the basis of sexuality or any behaviors in opposition the the particular church’s teachings.

It is a good thing that he was fired. But what perplexes me is why did this Catholic church hire someone who was an Episcopalian as their music director? I am not saying it was wrong of them to do so but it seems that they would have wanted to hire a Catholic instead.

We need to be praying for the fired music director. He has put his immortal soul in danger by his behavior. Perhaps this will serve as a wake up call to him.

I suspect NC is a fire at will State, That means you can fire someone for any reason other than Racre creed, gende, ror country of National origin

Exactly!!! Why parishes put themselves in these positions at all is beyond me.
glad I work in Canada 😃 Just kiddin’.
Yeah - in Canada you just get fired for TALKING about marriage being between a man and a woman!! read more here 😉

Those are but a few of the reasons why I am praying for the folks at that Church. Obviously, scandalous behavior was occurring all along since everyone “knew,” but I suppose the “marriage” made it so blatant, that it could no longer be ignored by the Church.

There was a similar incident in my parish on the West Coast. Two lesbians were attending Mass together every Sunday. Everything was hunky-dory until, true to form, they wanted to be Eucharistic ministers. The pastor explained to them that it would be conveying a message of approval to the congregation, and therefore one that would be mixed and confusing.

When there is need for a professional-level director, it is prudent to include non-Catholics in the search. As long as they understand they can neither contradict doctrine nor cause scandal it should be okay. It’s not like they were an EMHC, after all.

Not enough to go around…

In North Carolina, any employer can fire someone for being gay (or for being straight.). Sexual orientation is not a protected class under the state’s anti-discrimination law.

This is not true. You cannot get fired for simply talking about it unless you are inappropriate in what you say…like calling them “homos” or something like that.

This man was an anchor and his views (tweeted, not stated) were bad for his role as a media expert. This is entirely different and his opinion became a conflict of interest.

Canada is a wonderful liberal country where we have a lot of employment protection.

“Wonderful” and “liberal” in the same sentence? Without an ounce of irony? Your nation subsidizes with taxpayer dollars the ritual slaughter of infants and celebration of sodomy. It’s a sinkhole and its sins cry out to Heaven for vengeance. (Just like my own country, the flagship nation for the apostate spirit of the present age.)
