In quoting the Word of God do Catholics want it both ways?

Robert Heibel:
I fell so sorry that people have so little faith in God that they can’t just live the Word of God. He is God and has the power to protect us or our love ones if He wants them protected.
Bob
There is an old story that goes something like this:

There was a man who had great faith in God and believed that God would do whatever he asked. This man was then trapped in his home because of a severe flood. During the course of his ordeal the man prayed and prayed that God would save him. As the flood waters rose the man had to get on the roof of his house to stay dry. All this time he continued to implore the Lord to save him. At one point, two men in a boat happened by and asked him if he wanted to get in their boat, but he refused. Later a rescue helicopter flew over the man and dropped him a rope ladder, but he didn’t climb the ladder to get into the helicopter. Eventually, the man’s house was overcome and he drowned.

Upon reaching heaven he asked God why his prayers had not been answered. The man was greatly disturbed because he had placed all of his faith in God and implored God to save him. The Lord answered the man by saying. “How could you be so blind? I sent two men in a fishing boat to save you and then I sent a helicopter. You simply refused my help.”

Your last statement is not unlike that of the man in this story. God gives you the means to provide for your self defense, but you refuse to use them because you want God to rescue you in “your” way and not His.

We still want you to show us from scripture where self defense is condemned. None of the verses you have used so far address the issue at all. In the mean time, I will give you a couple of more verses to ponder as well. Acts 10:1 mentions Cornelius the Centurian. The passages describing Cornelius indicate that he was a devout man who feared God. We are then told that an angel appears to Cornelius and tells him that his prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God. Eventually, Cornelius becomes a baptized Christian. During the course of the narrative we are also told that Cornelius sends two servants and a “devout soldier” to Joppa to seek out the apostle Peter.

At no time during this narrative or anytime thereafter are we told anything negative about Cornelius or the “devout soldier” that he sent to Joppa. Both are men of the military. Clearly, their position is not condemned and neither is described as having abandoned their positions as soldiers. If “self defense” which extends to both the individual and the state were condemned by Jesus and were therefore not proper to Christianity, then scripture would have indicated this in the book of Acts in regards to Cornelius and the “devout soldier” under his command. This did not happen because self defense is legitimate.

Please carefully ponder this and the other passages given to you, and let us know what these things mean to you.

Roman’s 13: 3-4

3 Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive approval from it,

4 for it is a servant of God for your good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the evildoer.

Speaking of centurions…here’s another.

In Matthew 8:5-13 it says:

*" As he entered Caperna-um, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion answered him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment." *

Once again take notice. Jesus never condemns the centurion for his line of work or even hints that he should not be a soldier. Contrast this with the gospel incident when Jesus saves the adultress woman from those that wanted to stone her. At the end of this narrative Jesus says in John 8:11, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again.” Obviously, there must be some kind of distinction being made here. Jesus considers adultery sinful and tells the woman to sin no more. Jesus does not give the same kind of instruction to the soldier. There is not even the slightest hint from Jesus that it was wrong for him to serve in the military.

Add this to the other scriptures concerning self defense and analyze them on their scriptural merits.

(Matthew 5:43-44) “You have learnt how it was said:’ You must love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say this to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you;”

Bob, the two things that keep people from God are pride and disobedience. It has been this way from the beginning Adam and Eve’s Pride and disobedience were the first sin. Jesus through His suffering, death and resurrection redeemed everyone. Jesus left us with one Church and for over 1,000 years it remained intact. Then the first division, why because of pride, which led to disobedience. 500 more years go by and what happens, Martin Luthers pride causes another division. 500 more years and over 30,000+ divisions later Martin’s prophecy of as many churches as there are heads is alot closer to being completed. Ok slight detour I’ll get back on track. In John 14:16 Jesus tells us the Holy Spirit will be with us forever. In John 14:26, At the Last Supper Jesus promises the father will send the Holy Spirit who will teach them everything. In John 16:13 Jesus proclaims that the Holy Spirit will guide us and the Church into all Truth. The point here is the Holy Spirit can not lie or confuse but, only can lead to absolute truth. So who is the one who lies and confuses and to who’s advantage is it if there is division, Satan of course. The Holy Spirit would not lead us to all these Divisions because he will only teach absolute truth. Each of the 30,000+ divisions have at least one belief or doctrine that is different than the rest. If Jesus founded only one Church, then the rest were founded by men. Although many Christian churches believe much that is true they could not have been guided by the Holy Spirit unless they are the Church founded by Jesus. So which church did Jesus found? The Church founded by Jesus must go back to the time of Jesus. Its doctrines must be the same as the Apostolic Church and its leaders must be able to trace their authority back to the Apostles. Bob, only the Catholic Church meets these requirements. I know I’ve probably left many things unanswered but the desire here is to being you closer to the fullness of faith that God desires for all. please ask any questions and we will all help you get through them.

You have already quoted this scripture and I addressed this earlier. Apparently you need go back and carefully read our posts. Furthermore, re-quoting this verse is not exegesis of the verses presented to you. This is why you have so much difficulty with scripture. You take the verses you want and those become all that matter to you. The entire bible is the inspired word of God, and not just the verses that “you” select.

Boy this is an active thread!

Robert, I have read this entire thread and have noticed you have quoted the above scripture several times. One thing that came to mind during my reading of it was that if by defending your family from an enemy/attacker you would also be preventing your “enemy” from sinning to a greater degree. Wouldn’t that be considered an act of love toward your enemy? Wouldn’t that also be following what Jesus told us to do?

God Bless,

Stargazer257,
Once a person decides to commit a sinful act that is when the sin is committed, and even if that wasn’t true, two wrongs don’t make a right. So no, I love God more than anyone or anything. Loving God is hearing His Word and living it.

You love God so much that you hate your neighbor and would allow him to be murdered, and you hate the attacker so much that you would allow him to have the blood of an innocent man on his hands.

Bob your pride has become an obstacle for you at this point. you need to get past it.

Matt 22:36-40, 36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. 38 This is the greatest and the first commandment. 39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.

Robert, I hope you don’t have the responsibility for caring for others, especially your or someone else’s children. My impression from what you have said leaves me to believe that you would allow them to be slaughtered for your sake (“I would get in his way, but I wouldn’t hurt him.” from your post #34), and it makes me shudder to think that you may be so blinded by personal pride or have blinders on when reading or interpreting the scriptures that you could allow this postulated scenario to happen. Is that really what God would want you do??? To stand idly by or even put up a meager resistance, but “I better not hurt him?”

Come on Robert, the greatest gift any of us could give would be to lay one’s life down for another. That is the love of thy neighbor that Jesus spoke of. Stop thinking about yourself and think about others. Please don’t end up like the servant who received only one talent or the goats in Matt 25.

I think the Holy Spirit needs to do an intervention on you! We’re doing the best we can, but we need a little help here!

Let’s all pray for Robert! :gopray:

You obviously don’t understand from the Scriptures what Jesus was telling us about loving our enemies. If someone were going to kill whom ever, he or she would be my enemy. Jesus told us to love our enemies. Now I don’t think you will ever be convinced by what I say. I wonder if you could be convinced the way I was convinced. Jesus told me we were not to hurt anyone for any reason. Any way that is my advice to everyone, go ask Jesus, and wait to hear what He has to say.

Bob,

This is a big part of the problem and you have yet to deal with its reality. Many of us who disagree with you have already checked in with the Lord through prayer and the scriptures. Jesus is telling us something a little different from what you believe he has told you.

In general we agree with you except in the area of self-defense. You are but one person that has prayed on this matter. Everyone else that I have ever met that is a Christian disagrees with your opinion. These are prayerful Catholics and non-Catholics alike that walk with the Lord. The are spirit filled people.

Now I am going to accept the fact that you are a prayerful man and that you trust the word of the Lord as he presents it in your heart of hearts. The problem is not that the Lord is telling you something incorrectly. The problem is the imperfection of your heart as you listen to him. I am going to give you an example of exactly what can happen in this regard.

While I think you are a prayerful and sincere man, I think that St. Francis of Assisi was considerably more holy. Please take no offense to this because putting anyone’s name in the same sentence with St. Francis is high praise. St. Francis received a message from Jesus to “rebuild His Church.” St. Francis misunderstood this message and thought that God wanted him to rebuild the ruins of San Damiano Church in Italy. God’s real message to St. Francis, which he only understood later, was to work to reform the Church in general. When God told him to rebuild His Church, Francis simply misunderstood the Lord.

This misunderstanding was on the part of an extremely holy Saint.
Don’t you think that you too could have some misunderstandings?

Robert Heibel:
What I am trying to share with everyone is that yes Jesus (Holy Spirit) can and will speak to all that will open their hearts to Him. I say Jesus speaks to me, and some how that must mean I am sick. Paul heard Jesus was he sick? Others have heard Jesus; I believe Mother Theresa heard Jesus.
I agree that Jesus speaks to each of us in our hearts. The problem I have is with people who claim that Jesus speaks to them about matters of faith and then who go on to say that Jesus doesn’t speak to the Pope about matters of faith for the Church. Likewise, the same people will claim an unerring understanding of the meaning of Scripture and yet claim that Catholics are in error in their understanding simply because we disagree in our understanding.

I encounter people regularly who tell me that I am not “saved” because I am Catholic. These same Christians claim that by reading the Scriptures and praying the Holy Spirit will guide them to a flawless understanding of Scriptures. “After all, if I am a believer and pray honestly to the Holy Spirit, how could he mislead me?” What is this but belief in individual infallibility, which is the very thing they claim that the Pope cannot possibly have.

You opened this thread by challenging the Scripture that we believe established the office of Pope in Peter. My point is that your subsequent posts suggest that you have been given the same authority that you claim Peter and his successors cannot possibly have, that being: 1) the ability, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to accurately interpret Scripture; 2) the ability to hear from the Holy Spirit on matters that are not otherwise explicit in Scripture; and 3) the mandate to tell others that they must follow your understanding of 1) and 2).

Mr. Heibel, I mean no disrespect, and I certainly don’t think that you are sick because you hear from the Holy Spirit. I have no doubt that He speaks to your heart about matters that pertain to your life. But, when you open a thread that challenges a foundational truth of the Catholic Church, you must be consistent in your arguments or, as I stated in my first post, they have no credibility.

Well! Jim O you sure are not afraid to speak your mind are you? You seem to have gotten upset that anyone could challenge the teachings of the Catholic Church. You also seam to be quite adapt at putting someone on the defensive. Normally I wouldn’t even brother answering a post such as yours, because of all the false accusations in the post, but because many people may read just your post and believe that what you have said, is true, I must reply.

I never said I had unerring understanding of Scripture, what I share is what the Holy Spirit has shared with me. Now no man or woman is perfect and that is why I believe the Holy Spirit told me to tell people that no matter who tells them anything about God their were to ask Jesus if it was right or wrong. If I thought anyone was infallible then there would be no need to ask Jesus if something is right or wrong. Also I never said I had a mandate to tell others something they must follow. The Holy Spirit told me that I would talk to Catholics about a personal relationship with Jesus and to non-Catholics that the Eucharist was truly the Body and Blood of Jesus, and about asking Jesus what is right or wrong. Jesus told me that a time was coming soon when man would suffer more that he has ever suffered. I was to give a word and leave. Out of that word a community would grow. He wanted a place of safety for His people. Now does this sound like I am telling others what they must believe? By the way Jesus has told me many other things and some of what He has taught me I do share, but I never ask anyone to believe me, but go to Jesus and ask Him if it is right or wrong. By the way Jesus did tell me we were not to hurt anyone for any reason. My advice is to ask Him if that is true or not.

Duh. To do so is to claim Jesus lied with the whole “gates of Hell will never prevail” and such jazz. If He would lie to His Church, why wouldn’t He lie to you?

Robert,
This is an indication that you are a prophet of God, isn’t it? You go to him to ask what He wants - He tells you to spread the word around. That is the role of a prophet. What is your understanding of this relationship you have with Christ in this regard?

Robert…

May I ask you something, and please, I am not trying to bait, simply asking something for you to consider…

What is your definition of a personal relationship, What do you mean by the Holy Spirit speaks to you directly. While I have a great lvoe for our lord, and desire to do his will, he has never spoken to me audibly in words… I feel his presence in the church, I feel his presence in the eucharist, I feel his presence when I read scripture. But That is differant than saying he is speaking to me directly…

So, my question is this…

I read the bible on a daily basis, I pray as often as I can when ever i even think it might be appropraite, I have accepted and beleive that Jesus Died for us, so, since I cannot hear the audible voice of god as you appear to eb able to, does this make me any less a christian…

Something else to keep in mind…

How does the loard speak to us… as a thunder storm, as an earthquake, or the subtle breeze that follows…

In Christ
