The Pope at his best! I think Benedict and JP II would high five him here (so would Kierkegaard for that matter).

The Pontiff attributed the throwaway culture in part to

a model of globalization which levels out differences and even discards cultures, cutting them off from those factors which shape each people’s identity and constitute a legacy essential to their sound social development. In a drab, anonymous world, it is easy to understand the difficulties and the discouragement felt by many people who have literally lost the sense of being alive. This tragic situation is aggravated by the continuing economic crisis, which fosters pessimism and social conflict.

I remember when I was young back in the 60’s and 70’s even a remote pocket of Australia we would periodically hear the great sermons of Billy Graham on radio or in print. I can remember that even though he wasn’t Catholic that he had lots of admiration in the Catholic sphere for his unashamed, unfettered, forceful speech about right living and the Christlike life. That’s how I see Pope Francis taking over the world now. Real heartfelt unashamed evangelism. Modern evangelists have given the term evangelisation such a bad name and Pope Francis is taking it back!

Yes, sometimes I think we’ve all pigeon-holed him into this modernizing the Church/liberation theologian. I suspect he may have much more depth and range than that as a Pope. He’s the victim of his own campaigns , but the light still shines through once in a while…I will be happy to see what he does with the papacy after the Synods, etc., beyond that all that brouhaha, if you will. Come to think of it, a lot of people branded Benedict as a conservative and missed his real depth too, to this day…sad…

Yes, we live in a throwaway culture and often what we throw away is of precious value. I’m thinking here about religious things, like the Holy Scriptures. Many people are homeless to the degree that they ought to rubbish through discarded Truth that will lead to spiritual healing.
