Pretty cool. If he were in Rome, they groom would have to be a Swiss Guard, LOL
At least it used to be that way,
How sweet. 😍

I think it’s a very nice bit of news.

Some people on a Twitter are already complaining about this though. I assume, they already went through pre Cana before the earthquake.

People are getting crankier, when they can complain about a nice story.

Interesting story. I have friends in a similar situation, been married a few years civilly and have one child. They are still struggling with parish requirements. Since they both work and some of the marriage classes have to be taken together. They also had a wedding date planned, and cancelled twice because of this. They seemed to have given up.

If I show them this, they are going to go bonkers.

Forgot to mention, they have been told they are living in adultery and they have to separate before they marry.

I am wondering if there are details left out in the article? parishes assume you are only lying to them and need documentation for everything.

Each Bishop determines what prep is required in his Diocese. If your friends are having trouble attending a class, I would advise them to contact the Chancery office and see what options are available. Sometimes the local pastor is not aware there is an alternative to XYZ.

I too wonder if it was a bit prearranged. I presume however that this couple had received all necessary permissions to marry prior to the earthquake disrupting their plans, so if there was prearrangement then their priest could have already sent in all the documents. Also the mere fact that the married couple just happened to be working on the same flight and it just happened to be the one the Holy Father was on.

But it’s still a nice story and I’m glad the couple have been properly married now since they already have kids.

It could not have been total spur of the moment. It would have had to have been prearranged given the usual requirements for engaged couples.

Makes for a good story, though.

The Holy Father has the authority to waive the Pre-Cana retreat.

Every time I read a headline, I hum

Kick 'em when they’re up
Kick 'em when they’re down
Kick 'em when they’re up
Kick 'em when they’re down
Kick 'em when they’re up
Kick 'em when they’re down
Kick 'em when they’re up
Kick 'em all around

From that article:
As this story reverberates ‘round the world, now, deacons, priests, and bishops who try to uphold Church norms fostering values such as deliberate marriage preparation, an ecclesial context for a Catholic wedding, and the use of established and reliable texts for expressing consent will, undoubtedly, have the Podest-Ciuffardi wedding tossed in their face as evidence that, if Pope Francis does not insist on such legalistic silliness and only cares about whether two people love one another, why shouldn’t they do likewise? The ministry of conscientious clergy in this regard just got harder.
I can understand the concern here. I have a priest friend who expressed something pretty similar on Facebook yesterday. He is just waiting for people to start approaching him asking for beach weddings and zero marriage preparation and pointing to this story as their justification.

I don’t doubt that some will do that. I guess I’m not quite so cynical, though. He’s the pope, so he can do these sorts of things that ordinary priests and bishops would not be able to do. But now the priests will have to explain that they still cannot do these things even though the pope did.

Of course, I would point out that this is a convalidation, and that the couple had been planning to marry in the Church before their Church got destroyed in an earthquake. So it’s not a normal situation to begin with. And convalidations are often far simpler affairs even in a regular parish.

He doesn’t have the authority to change the words of the rite. I hope he had a ritual book or I hope he has the entire rite memorized word for word or it could end up lack of form.

I’m going to guess that at the very least the Vatican staff could have reached out via phone/text to get the proper words.

This is the same pope who pleads with Clerics to do a better job of Marriage prep.

This event had to have been pre-arranged due to the prenuptial marriage requirements. Even the Pope has to ensure people are free to Marry in the Church. Also he can’t make up the words to the rite including the intent to Marry.

That would make sense if it were pre-arranged. It does seem fortuitous that the husband and wife were both together on the flight. I’m sure there’s more that happened in the story than what the reports say.

I see your point here. Let me rephrase. Canon law points to the fact that the ritual text must be used. The pope could change the rules. He would have to do that by decree not “on the fly”. No pun intended.
