let’s get this straight - i do not condone abortion under most circumstances. at all. i never said that! what i wanted to share was how this fundamentalist, hardline stance has affected me. it seemed from the article that it’s a blanket policy and lacking in mercy. perhaps i’m wrong, but that is what i got out of that article.
i work in a hospital too (and i dread rotating through the gynae dept since there will be TOPs done), and have had patients die right in front of me despite having all the support we give. it saddens me greatly that i would have to ALLOW a person to die. it seems almost like capital punishment which the catholic church is against.
the catholic church is against contraception and abortion to protect the sanctity of marriage (and sex). this incident does nothing to promote that.
with regard to the article, i read it when i was in high school many years back - it impacted me greatly because i was almost of the same age as the girl. it was in my country’s national newspaper, so the source has to be secular.

stephanut, the fact that the article you read was secular makes it even more likely that the reporting was inaccurate.
The secular media is not usually accurate when it comes to reporting about any Christian issues, Protestant or Catholic. I’m not saying that they are doing this deliberately. Religious and Church issues are complex, and often, the reporter just doesn’t have a grasp of all the facts.
Obviously I don’t know for certain, but I’m guessing that the article you read was distorted, and gave an inaccurate report of the bishop’s actions toward the little girl.
I say this because I KNOW that the Catholic Church would say that doctors can try to save the life of a pregnant woman, but NOT using abortion. In the case of this twelve-year-old, it would have been permissible to deliver the baby early and try to help it survive using our advanced neonatal medical technology. This would have (hopefully) saved the life of the mother and perhaps, by a miracle, have saved the life of the baby, too.
I encourage you to talk with your local Respect Life chair, and you will see that when it comes to babies AND mothers, the Catholic Church is loving and willing to do almost anything to help. This means practical help, too, with money and other material needs.
