Indecent magazine put out of business by coronavirus

Just a quick response. Almost everything the government tries to ban or regulate doesn’t have the desired effect. Biggest example, “prohibition”. Failed. “The war on drugs” and “Just say no”. Might have had an affect, can’t be sure now.
People will find ways around laws, they always do. Making laws would have the makers feel good as if they’ve had an impact, but will not stop a behavior.
Dominus vobiscum.

According to the story I read it is only the US edition that will no longer be printed.

Did any leading Catholics ever appear in it (in the articles I mean)?
Lech Walesa did, in an interview, and even though he isn’t Catholic, Jimmy Carter did an interview as well. Not clear what Walesa was thinking — did he not understand that so much as having this magazine in one’s possession is a proximate occasion of mortal sin for a normal heterosexual male?
I was under the impression, from what I read elsewhere, that this shut down of the print magazine was temporary. This quote from the article cited in the OP seems to support that - bolded text is my emphasis.
We have decided that our Spring 2020 Issue, which arrives on U.S. newsstands and as a digital download this week, will be our final printed publication for the year in the U.S.”
FOR THE YEAR. Which seems to imply that the print edition may return in 2021.
You could read it that way — and that is the most reasonable way to read those words — but the press releases imply that this is the end for the print magazine. They may have access to information that we don’t. And any magazine that discontinues publication can always resume if circumstances change, or if someone buys the rights to the magazine’s name and revives it. That’s what happened with Newsweek.

Did they publish science fiction? I wasn’t aware.

Remember Omni magazine? I was so shocked when I discovered it was owned by Bob Guccione.

Way, way back in the day they’d publish short stories and stuff as well as aritcles. Not something they have been known for now for decades and I won’t lament the loss of the magazine if it stops being published altogether. It’s not a cultural artefact I’d have much nostalgia for if it disappeared.

PB always cultivated the cachet of being an urbane, “classy” magazine that just happened to have pictures of women in it whose state of dress (or lack thereof) presented a proximate occasion of mortal sin to any normal male. It was arguably not “pornography” as they did not depict sexual acts. Nonetheless it was an incalculable fountain of evil. For some, the evil one is able to enter into their lives through an appeal to sophistication and intelligent discourse.

For every ‘Playboy mag’ that’s shutting down due to this virus there’s 20+ ethical and community friendly businesses also shutting down due to the same virus.

Yeah, but praise God for making that darn Playboy pay!

Steven Spielberg’s first feature film, Duel (released as a TV movie here in the U.S. but theatrically overseas), was based on a story by Richard Matheson that was published in Playboy. I learned this from the special features on the DVD, which I had a copy of at one time.

No, praise God for removing a very spiritually dangerous magazine from store shelves.

I am sorry that all of these businesses are having to shut down and people are losing their jobs. Perhaps this crisis, if it lasts long enough, will force Americans finally to develop the social solidarity that many other countries have, and shake us out of this “everyone for themselves” mentality. There may be a lot of good to come from it.

The virus does not target black, white, rich, poor, Catholic, Protestant, pro-Trump or anti-Trump. This is one time we’re all in this together.

He’s only making plans for you, Nigel … He only wants what’s best for you …

I also thought the print magazine had already bit the dust years ago, before Hef died even.
I haven’t seen an issue in years.
Ditto. I thought they exclusively went the way of the e-magazine years ago.

The print magazine has been struggling for years (over a decade). I guess I don’t see this as big news, it was inevitable…to the point i thought it already happened.

It and Penthouse also ran good true-crime articles, in the years before ID Network and Laci Peterson saturated the market and made that genre mass-popular for every bored female out there (the quality of the genre has greatly declined as a result, most crimes and criminals frankly aren’t that unique or interesting to write about). Also some good articles on celebs and creative personal memoir writing.

My 13 year old had a debit card. Which would work. So yeah, you might prevent the really young kids…

It also wouldn’t stop a 8 or 9 year old from buying a prepaid credit card at the store.

Playboy has been dying by inches over the last several years.
Covid19 was the last nail in the coffin.

(It’s the lyrics to a song by XTC.)
Oh, OK, no problem. I’d never heard of that band. I don’t presume to “make plans” for anyone, but in the words of Jerry Springer and, now, Lester Holt of NBC News, I adhere to the maxim “take care of yourself and each other”. If you can’t trust Jerry and Lester, who can you trust? 😇 📺

I’ll take your word for it. Penthouse was just gross.

They don’t have credit cards. So, you would have to put in credit card information. The vast majority of minors do not have a credit card. Again, the credit card would act as age verification.
