What exactly is a “born-again Roman Catholic”? Aren’t all Catholics born again of water and the Spirit (John 3:3-8)?
Bobby Jindal, a conservative Republican congressman from the New Orleans suburbs and the son of immigrants from India, was elected Louisiana’s governor Saturday, inheriting a state that was suffering well before Hurricane Katrina left lingering scars two years ago.
Mr. Jindal, 36, defeated three main challengers in an open primary, becoming this state’s first nonwhite governor since a Reconstruction-era figure briefly held the office 130 years ago.
A born-again Roman Catholic, Mr. Jindal made a particular campaign target of [conservative northern and eastern parishes that are largely Protestant], visiting them frequently and bringing his brand of devout Christianity to their rural churches. His social-conservative message — teaching “intelligent design” as an alternative to evolution in public schools, a total ban on abortion, repealing hate-crimes laws — would have been welcome in these areas.

Teaching Intelligent Design as an alternative to evolution??:bigyikes:

Please tell me I’m dreaming.

Jindal was raised Hindu. He converted to Catholicism and was baptized as an adult, as was his wife.

He thinks parents should have a say in their children’s education, and it shouldn’t be monopolized by the State Government. If those districts want to teach the kids Intelligent design, their property taxes pay for the schools, their children attend them, they can teach them whatever nonsense they want, so long as they learn math, reading, and writing.

Jindal is brilliant. He actually accomplishes things. He really thinks he should be responsible with the taxpayers money, and then he IS responsible. He even pays for personal phone calls out of his own pocket. I hope he runs for President one day.

There’s “non-sense” and then there’s “non-sense”. The key distinction here is that Intelligent Design is not “science” and thus does not belong in a “science-classroom” as an alternative to scientifically evidence theories such as evolutionary theory.

If they want Intelligent Design discussed in a Philosophy, History, or Sociology class; then be my guest. But just keep it out of Science classes.

May God bless the new governor. There’s hope for Louisiana.

Indeed !

Isn’t it time that Louisiana , with her Catholic presence , brought forth something like this …

His Mysterious Ways …

In these times of ours, when new age influences subtly or overtly affect many, here is a hindu convert , depicting what Pope JohnPaul11 alluded to, as the springtime …

Happened to read how he delivered their 3rd child ( before ambulance could arrive) on Aug.15th - Feast of Assumption and Indian Independance Day .

Mysteriously, St. Thomas , the Patron Apostle of India , who is believed to have converted many all over India (and most fell back later from ? persecutions) is also depicted as recieving the belt /garter /mantle , from Bl.Mother at the time of her Assumption (tradition).

May all of God’s great plans for him and their family and through them for this country, the world and The Church , all come to fulfillment !

My aunt lives in New Orleans and has told me some hair raising stories about the corruption there. Bobby Jindal seems like an intelligent and moral man who loves his state and wants it to be more than the corrupt mess that the politicians have made it.

Geaux Bobby!

Just when I thought there was no hope, something like this happens.

If he does a good job quickly, he could end up on the “ticket” in '08!

LOL! You certainly are not from the Pelican state! There’s no doing a “good job quickly” in Louisiana, and least of all in a year and a half. He might be ready to wrest the presidency away from the Democrats in '16, if he succeeds as governor.

I heard him talking about that on the radio after it happened. He was talking about how he had to tie off the umbilical cord. I was surprised, first that a congressman was actually at home with his wife when she went into labor, but then more surprised that he actually delivered the baby himself instead of somebody else that happened to be there.

As much as I would like to see him take on Hillary Clinton, it would be too soon. He’ll be too busy cleaning the Aegean Stables for the next year to campaign for President.

Plus he is just too young, He needs more experience and a longer, stronger record. One of the big mistakes the Democrat Party makes is taking young, inexperienced, but reasonably likeable candidates and trying to launch them into the Oval Office.

Think of Louisiana as practice. After he cleans up this mess, then there will be no doubt he should be President.

I wish I could find the transcripts from Jindal’s debates with Blanco 4 years ago. I wish all debates were that entertaining.

I don’t think Al Masetti is naive enough to suggest Jindal would run for president. He was suggesting he could be picked as VP nominee.

I rather doubt it. What constituency would he bring to the ticket? Indians are not generally viewed as minorities in quite the same way as blacks or hispanics, so I don’t think he’ll have any unusual appeal to those groups. Republicans generally do well in the South, so they don’t need him for that. And a small but significant portion of the Republican base is going to be suspicious of a foreign-looking candidate.

I agree with Richardols, once he’s got real credentials as a governor, he’ll be more of a player - possibly as soon as 2012, but more likely 2016. By then he may be a senator.

I don’t think being a senator would help him in a presidential bid. He would be viewed as a liability as a VP nominee next year. Most of his extended family is still
  1. Hindu
  2. Living in India
The pictures of his family in their turbans might have cost him the election 4 years ago.

Well, if the people of Louisiana (which had grousome Jim Crowe laws) can elect him as their Governor, I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t succeed on a Vice Presidential ticket.

In due time, in due time. Let’s see how well he does as Governor before making him the VP nominee in 2012. He may have no interest in anything more than running Louisiana well. And, that would be one heck of an accomplishment.

Despite media depiction and popular belief, Louisiana isn’t really much more or less racist than the rest of the country.

I’ve noticed in the Midwest and on the East Coast that there are less racial conflicts, but that stems from the schools and neighborhoods being segregated due to the vast income differences and smaller minority populations.

The South doesn’t have as much segregation, but there are more conflicts. It is an annoying subject so I will drop it.

I think Jindal will stay here. He has always talked more about solving Louisiana’s problems than about national issues like the war. He doesn’t seem to have his eye on Washington right now.

The Republican party has their eye on him, I’m sure, but I don’t think they will jump the gun with him either.

I have been an admirer of B. Jindal’s since he first entered politics a few yrs. back. We must pray for him.

ANATOMY OF A CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP

My first meeting with Agnes proved to be an ethical dilemma, quite a fitting symbol of things to come. I met her on the way to church during my first Sunday at college, a weekend normally spent by freshmen imbibing as much alcohol as possible while starting friendships that will last a lifetime. I, as a new convert to Christianity, was excited about attending church and woke even while my roommate, a Southern Baptist minister, slept. The campus was peaceful on that sunny morning, and there were few distractions as I contemplated God—few distractions, that is, until I saw her. She was beautiful and lost, and I was more than happy to fulfill my Christian duty by showing her the way to church. Little did I know that I would fulfill this role in a far more significant sense.

As we walked toward the university services, I tried to find out what I could about her, but the trip was not long enough for us to get past initial pleasantries. The dilemma occurred when Agnes announced her intention to attend the Protestant services. Though I was non-denominational at the time, I had promised my high school girlfriend that I would attend Catholic Mass once a week. Cindy and I were having problems in our relationship, and so I spent several moments trying to convince my conscience that the joy of sitting next to Agnes and talking with her afterwards outweighed any obligation to a woman who was quickly becoming an ex-girlfriend. This was no time to start sacrificing for principle, and, yet, I could not bring myself to break a promise.
