I know I heard about a brawl over there between the two sides in about the last six weeks. No bullets apparently, just physical alterations between soldiers of the two sides, China and India.

“Even so, the current standoff and recent incursions appear to be different from the past, as Chinese troops have shown more aggression, engaged in physical skirmishes and disregarded agreed protocols,” Ashok Kantha, Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, who served as Ambassador to Beijing (2014-2016) explained.

In fact, the numbers of Chinese soldiers at each point of recent confrontations, including three points in Ladakh or the “Western sector” and at Nakula Pass in Sikkim, have been a factor of some concern. Officials have spoken of soldiers being outnumbered when normal patrols with the strength of a few dozen each on the Indian side have run into Chinese forces that number in hundreds.

“They have reportedly pushed into a new area, Galwan river valley, where the LAC was not disputed, pitched tents and dug in with reinforcement. They seem to be physically changing the ground situation. The fact that there have incursions at multiple locations is worrisome,” said Mr. Kantha.

China is attempting to put pressure on India and the matter should be taken seriously, former northern Army commander, Lieutenant General (Retired) DS Hooda said. “The India-China issue is serious because the kind of violence that has happened is something we have not seen in the past. So many people have gotten injured and this is unusual,” he said.

Satellite images show massive construction activity at a high altitude Chinese air base, located just 200 kilometres away from the Pangong Lake, the site of the skirmish between forces of India and China on May 5 and May 6.

Reports indicate that several thousand Chinese soldiers have either crossed or are very close to the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh. The skirmishes which began on May 5 this year have seen vicious hand-to-hand fighting between Indian and Chinese forces on the North bank of the Pangong Lake. The biggest area of concern is thought to be the Galwan River basin further North where Chinese forces are reported to have positioned themselves to threaten a road completed last year which leads up to Daulat Beg Oldie, a crucial Indian Air Force base in Ladakh which supplies Indian soldiers in the region.

Multiple meetings have been held between local commanders from the rank of Colonel to Major General in Ladakh but there has been no breakthrough at the moment. In Delhi, the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held meetings with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Armed Forces Chief.
