Just looking for the official reference where contraception was declared a sin in an infalliable way. Anyone have a reference or, even better, a link?
It is kind of an academic point.Just looking for the official reference where contraception was declared a sin in an infalliable way. Anyone have a reference or, even better, a link?
Ex Cathedra? No.Just looking for the official reference where contraception was declared a sin in an infalliable way. Anyone have a reference or, even better, a link?
Start with Sacred Scripture and the story of Onan, who willfully* “spilled his seed on the ground”* to prevent any child from being born----which was a wicked act in the eyes of God. (Genesis 38). But the use of contra-ception (against-conception) is a willful attempt to use the sexual organs while twharting the purpose of the organs.Just looking for the official reference where contraception was declared a sin in an infalliable way. It has been the teachings even in the Old Testament and the constant teaching of The Church.Just looking for the official reference where contraception was declared a sin in an infalliable way. Anyone have a reference or, even better, a link?
It is high time that all Catholics got this right and thus are able to help others.royal archer #1

That is exactly what I was hoping for! expecially the link!…
From Casti Connubii, Pius XI, 1930, here is the infallible definition:
“56. Since, therefore, openly departing from the uninterrupted Christian tradition some recently have judged it possible solemnly to declare another doctrine regarding this question, the Catholic Church, to whom God has entrusted the defense of the integrity and purity of morals, standing erect in the midst of the moral ruin which surrounds her, in order that she may preserve the chastity of the nuptial union from being defiled by this foul stain, raises her voice in token of her divine ambassadorship and through Our mouth proclaims anew: any use whatsoever of matrimony exercised in such a way that the act is deliberately frustrated in its natural power to generate life is an offense against the law of God and of nature, and those who indulge in such are branded with the guilt of a grave sin.”

See also subsequent Church documents that affirm that understanding like:The Church has always taught the intrinsic evil of contraception, that is, of every marital act intentionally rendered unfruitful. This teaching is to be held as definitive and irreformable. Contraception is gravely opposed to marital chastity. (Vademecum for Confessors, 2.4)That is exactly what I was hoping for! expecially the link!
Thank you.!
Such can be said not to be an “infallible definition” (like the Immaculate Conception etc). From Casti Connubii, Pius XI, 1930, here is the infallible definition:

The infallible definition (a definitive act) against contraception in *Casti Connubii *is an infallible doctrine, not a dogma.Bookcat #12

Not being a dogma has not detracted from the “ex cathedra” status nor the infallibility of the definition. Like Humanae Vitae, *Casti Connubii *has defined infallibly against contraception.if Pope Pius XI HAD “defined” it then–it would be quite manifest as a defined dogma in all the years since. Many things that are indeed “infallible” are never “defined” per se by the extraordinary Magisterium)
The understanding of this matter here is incorrect. The infallible definition (a definitive act) against contraception in *Casti Connubii *is an infallible doctrine, not a dogma.
Definitive = Clearly defined or formulated/Supplying or being a final or conclusive settlement.
Such can be said not to be an “infallible definition” (like the Immaculate Conception etc).
Does not mean it is not an infallible doctrine…but “definitions”…are very precise and very particular things.
(he is there stating the constant teaching anew in the face of the current events of his time…I see where the confusion enters here…but I would say he is using the language that was customary then…
