dronald. You asked on post 266 (Whew. A lot of posts).
I’m wondering if I can Baptize a fully grown man who has never been Baptized and doesn’t wish to be?
That’s not to say that he’s trying to stop the Baptism, I just mean if I wanted I could Baptize him and call him Baptized, even if he never asked for it?
Bold and UL of your quote mine.
The answer is: No.
You cannot for example, “splash water at the swimming pool” on adults Baptizing them in any way if they are not seeking Baptism.
Likewise . . . .
The Catholic Church teaches that ADULTS need to believe in some sense first, and be Baptized (Mark 16:16).
The Catholic Church teaches that ADULTS need to repent of their sins first, and be Baptized (Acts 2:38).
The Catholic Church teaches that ADULTS need to rise first (stand up and come of their own volition), and be Baptized (Acts 22:16).
The Church affirms all of these Bible verses.
No forced Baptisms are even possible. I know Catholics have disobeyed Church teachings and carried out forced “Baptisms” but with those impediments present (a person resisting, even interiorly), there is NO Baptism that takes place in those situations.
Think of the Israelites, the Red Sea, and Being SAVED by Water and the Holy Spirit
Recall the Holy Spirit (see Exodus 13 and the Shekinah glory cloud—the Holy Spirit) led the people by a theophany of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night out of bondage.
Yes it was the Holy Spirit that saved the Israelites.
But the Holy Spirit used “WATER” to save them. The “water” of the Red Sea!
The Israelites were saved by “water and the Spirit”. (That concept sounds familiar)
The Israelites were delivered from bondage by water and the Spirit.
Think deeper concerning the Israelites and this crossing of the Red Sea.
The adults I suppose COULD have stayed on the Egyptian side and not crossed the Red Sea with Moses.
The BABIES would
depend upon their parents to make that decision for them (just like they would with for example, circumcision).
And the parents DID (“by faith”) make this decision for them!
And Moses would NOT have told the parents, “Well hey! Wait a minute! These babies have to wait on the shore on the Egyptian side of the Red Sea until they are old enough to make a spirit-filled decision and accept Yahweh into their own hearts for themselves.”
Moses would never have said this.
This leading their own infants through the Red Sea was done by faith—the faith of the parents of the children.
HEBREWS 11:29 29
By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as if on dry land; but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.
By faith the infants crossed the Red Sea—by the faith of their parents.
**The Israelites were saved in a natural sense by water and
saved in a supernatural sense by the Spirit when crossing the Red Sea . . . **
Likewise Baptism saves us in a natural sense by water and a supernatural sense by the Spirit.
The water of the Red Sea and the Holy Spirit leading them—God used the real actual water as a conduit of His saving grace (saving them from the Egyptians but also as a foreshadowing of saving us through Baptism from sin).
And this was REAL WATER (not “spiritual” water like deniers of Scripture try to assert, or 6 inch deep water as these deniers also claim, nor was it “amniotic fluid”).
This is one reason WHY it always strikes me odd that the
Answers In Genesis people can be so strong in affirming Old Testament events (thank goodness in some regards concerning this), yet so unbelieving in their New Testament fulfillments (and fulfillments are always greater than the foreshadows–see Hebrews 10:1 which talks about this concept in regards to Temple sacrifice but the idea is the same). After awhile you begin to see that belief in this type of thing (i.e. Baptism, the Eucharist, etc.) is a great gift indeed and I can do nothing more than shudder and thank God for this grace as I could NEVER believe this stuff on my own. I sometimes literally weep tears of joy over this wonderful plan of God that He reveals to us.
But sometimes in our hardness of heart, we have a tough time actually believing this type of thing.
Even Abram (who was now just being called by God, as father “Abraham” meaning FATHER of a multitude) fell down
laughing at God, when God told him he was going to multiply his descendants (see Genesis 17:17).
Anyway back to the Israelites and the Red Sea. This is WHY St. Paul can say . . .
1st CORINTHIANS 10:1-6 1 I want you to know, brethren, that
our fathers were all under the cloud, and
all passed through the sea, 2 and all were
baptized into Moses
in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same supernatural food 4 and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless with most of them God was not pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things are warnings for us, not to desire evil as they did.
And that’s why St. John can use BABY IMAGERY concerning being “BORN” again in John 3:3-5.
JOHN 3:3-5 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is
born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is
born of
water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
So NO. An ADULT cannot be forcibly or incidentally Baptized. It would be . . . an impediment to receiving this grace.
