Innocuous Question - Mass at Disney World

We’ll be vacationing at Disney World with our DD and DSIL and DGSs, 3 and 3 months. We’re flying in and will not have a car.

Is anyone familiar with the options for Mass (I think Saturday night might work better with the reservations we have, but we could make Sunday work) in the area? Is public transportation an option? Is it possible to get a taxi that would hold all six of us? Or would that be expensive enough that we should just rent a car for the one day?

Remember the Crystal Cathedral? Well, the Diocese of Orange bought the property, because the former cathedral for the diocese was far too small. The cathedral itself is being refitted as a Catholic church, to be called Christ Cathedral, but in the meantime the parish and school of nearby St. Callistus has moved onto the grounds, which are about 35 acres. As I understand it, part of the deal was that the Protestant ministry that used to be at the Crystal Cathedral is going to take over their old church (which was ritually vacated at the end of June, I think)

I would think you can call St. Callistus or the diocese of Orange and find out about Mass times…

There’s a Byzantine Catholic church in Orlando, but I can’t remember the name.

I’m sorry-and surprised-to hear about the lack of a Mass in Disney. They have everything else there!

I’ve also been to Mary Queen of the Universe several times; it’s beautiful. It depends on where you are staying, but it would probably be cheaper to rent a car for the day than take a taxi, or even find one large enough. The shrine itself is very easy to find.
 
If you call the hotel where you’ll be staying, the concierge will usually know about local religious services, include Catholic Mass times, and you can also inquire what options are available for transportation. They can probably call ahead for a taxi van to meet you, and then you would ask said van driver to meet you back at the Church after an hour. I would think a taxi would be much cheaper than renting a car, even if you need to take two taxis.

Then I would probably verify anything you learn about a particular Mass time by visiting the parish’s website or calling the Church directly. God bless!
 
Call your hotel and ask if the airport shuttle can get you to Mass.
 
There is also the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Celebrations. It is also very close to WDW as well. celebrationcatholic.org

I find it a real shame that Disney no longer offers mass on site. I remember years ago that they did, at either the Contemporary or the Poly. Going off site is fine, I just wish that there was some place that offered a much earlier mass, say 6am on Sunday, rather than 7:30 which the shrine does. I don’t care how devout you are, trying to schedule Church attendance and getting around Disney can be a daunting task.
 
Mary, Queen of the Universe is right there and I have taken a taxi there/back many times. Disney seems to be a popular location for business conferences, so I end up there a lot.

Just get a card from the taxi driver and call the dispatch when you are ready to leave Mass.

Hotels in Disney don’t do anything for free, so don’t expect shuttle service.
 
Thank you to all who have taken the time to respond. We haven’t done a family trip to DW for many years, and when we did, Mass was still being said at our resort. I always loved attending Mass with other Catholics who fulfilled their /Sunday obligation, even when on vacation. I think it’s one of the reasons DD takes the obligation seriously. It wasn’t just something her weird parents did; everybody did it.

I’m going to Mapquest both Corpus Christi and Mar QotU and see which is closer to our hotel and then check with our hotel and/or some taxi companies. The reason i asked was because the last time we were in Phoenix, the taxi to Mass was $40 each way, and I’m pretty sure I can rent a car for less than that.

If you end up going to Mary Queen of the Universe be sure to stop by the bookstore - it’s FABULOUS!
Also, it’s in walking distance to some great outlet shopping. The traffic in that area gets REALLY REALLY busy due to those outlets, so a taxi may get pricey while just sitting in traffic… just FYI.

A Catholic churcH, a great bookstore, AND outlet shopping! I think I do need to rent a car. 🙂

First thing I thought of when I saw Em’s post…A shrine, bookstore, and outlet shopping? Sweet!

You are correct that they no longer have Mass @ WDW.

But Mary Queen of the universe is very close.

Another vote for Mary Queen of the Universe. Usually a very orthodox Mass, very pretty church, magnificent bookstore with really lovely religious art for sale. The grounds give you a prayerful feeling, they are nicely landscaped and laid out. The whole place is a gift to vacationing Catholics.
I do have an odd question. Does anyone else feel that the sculpture at the back of the church depicting the resurrected Christ looks as if Jesus is coming out of a crumpled paper bag? Everyone I have asked has agreed with me on this.
 
There’s actually a taxi depot to the side of the shrine with taxis ready to go and a person in direct communication with the company to call for additional cars.

MQotU was built specifically for Orlando’s tourist industry. They’re prepared to deal with a lot of carless people. 🙂
