Al Masetti:
We’re not playing bean ball here. People who throw around the word “torture” without defining their terms or coming up with some techniques for extracting information that actually work, are not helping this discussion.
Even if the definition is a bit fuzzy, can we at least all agree that severe beatings, burns, and broken bones fit the definition?

Do you remember…

… in the good old days, when Catholics and others were conducting protests at abortion mills… and the police would use “pain” to attempt to get the protesters under control…???

Remember that… and if a body part broke off… tough nuggies.

Do you remember that???

And you remember how that was **illegal **for the police to use brutal force? Remember also how when dogs were turned loose on civil rights protestors, that was also **illegal **and wrong?

How many cops went to prison for that?

Seems to me that rough treatment at that time was cheered on by the mainstream media.

By the way, since I’m here, the US has had one kind of installation or another at Guantanamo since 1903. So I guess we’ll be there until 2103. Unless a deal is cut similar to that which resulted in giving away the Panama Canal or the Vieques and Culebra naval practice areas.

Isn’t that all the more reason to speak out now?

In the City of New York, we have a Civilian Complaint Review Board, which allows for a redress of grievances when the police get out of line. I believe it is standard practice nationwide for a mechanism of this sort to be in place.

If you find yourself in Guantanamo, you have no such opportunity. The White House would even like to strip detainees of habeas corpus, so that they can’t even ask why they are imprisoned.

If you people want to see goologs look at Cuba.
No, ma’am, if you want to see gulags, look at China, which we are so friendly with.
Oh but I know you all love Castro.
Why is it better to be in love with the Chinese than with the Cubans?
