Hello brothers and sisters,

I have a question, one that has bothered me for a quite of few reasons… i love the church and its precepts and its truth… i would not give up catholicism for anything because of the eucharist…sometimes its hard to read anti-catholic comment… anyways. my question is as follows…

is intercourse only intended for chidl making (obviously the spouses would have had the sacrament of marriage)… or can a wedded catholic couple have intercourse outside of ti… it seems to me that it would be unfair for it only being for children… while that is the function of our bodies is to pro create… that i understand… i also know that you can do it on the menstrual cycle… as long as you intend to procreate…

i would just bleieve it to be unfair to not be able to enjoy the pleasure of intercourse with your spouse … one of the arguments on the protestant site was that in scripture it says that because the husbands body is subject to the wife and the wife to the husband it therefor means that our "desires’ must be fulfilled…

i fully acknowledge the rational thought of procreation and the not wanting to treat your spouse as a object of enjoyment i am trying to wrap my head around the only having sex for children (because if i only want 2… i think im goin tow ant to have intercourse more than that !)
A husband and wife having sex is a good in of itself, even aside from procreation (although contraception is still evil).

I recommend reading “What is Marriage” to gain a good understanding of the marital bond. The book is primarily a response to revisionists that want to change the definition of marriage, but really, it explains the marital relationship in general.

1 Corinthians 7

1 NOW concerning the thing whereof you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2 But for fear of fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
Celibacy is best, but if one has not the gift of celibacy, then it is better for a person to marry, and not to fornicate. The sexual urge is strong, it is better to marry than to take the chance of having uncommitted sexual relations.

3 Let the husband render the debt to his wife, and the wife also in like manner to the husband. 4The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband. And in like manner the husband also hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
Consenting intimate relations between the husband and wife that are open to the possibility of life, but not just for that purpose. (as others have said, the intent to prevent pregnancy by using anything other than NFP)

5 Defraud not one another, except, perhaps, by consent, for a time, that you may give yourselves to prayer; and return together again, lest Satan tempt you for your incontinency.
To prolong abstinence from intimate relations with the other spouse can lead to temptation for the one withholding, or the one relations are withheld from. Sometimes there are valid reasons for doing so (medical, personal, etc…) but just to do so for ‘selfish’ reasons is to withhold the unitive part of the marriage act.

We are advised to marry, and to be intimate with our spouse for more reasons than just conception, it is also a ‘preventive’ measure against fornication and other sex acts, as well as forming a giving and loving bond between the spouses.

Anyone correct me if I’m wrong, just has always been my take on the above passages.

God bless OP

If he doesn’t then he must be married to a Saint. I keep that week of Hell in my diary so I can be ready for it.
Although this is mildly amusing, the reality is a lot of women do not experience mood disturbances or personality changes related to menstruation. I have never experienced either phenomenon, and I can assure you I am NOT a saint, but I have known some women who not only experience such upheaval, but they seem to revel in it and use it as an excuse for being nasty to others. Not very becoming behavior at all. I know this information is not relevant to you, but others who are reading this thread might be concerned that being treated poorly is to be expected, based upon your dark humor.

i will learn about NFP but let me get this straight…

if you fail to withdrawal (which is what you rae to do))… than you can avoid having a kid? will nt the semen always get to where it must?
Yes, it will probably get there, but there may not be an egg there to be fertilized. Women are fertile only for about one or two days every month, though conception can happen as a result of relations a few days before, because sperm can live up to 3 to 5 days. So the man and woman together have something like 4 to 7 days in each cycle when conception is possible. On all other days of the cycle, conception is impossible or at least extremely unlikely. NFP helps the couple to observe physical signs in order to estimate when these potentially fertile days occur. The couple can then use this information either to have relations or to abstain from relations during this potentially fertile window.

Also, please keep in mind that pregnancy is about nine months long, and of course an already-pregnant woman cannot get pregnant again. And if the mother does a type of breastfeeding called “ecological breastfeeding”, in many cases she will have anywhere from six months to two years of natural infertility following the birth of her baby, before cycles return. So for some couples, simply getting pregnant means that it will be around two years before the next time that they could possibly conceive, even if they were intimate almost every day during those two years.

From the way you write, it seems English is not your first language. Do you speak Spanish? Mandame ud un mensaje si que si, ok?

A good place to start learning about female cycles is the Couple To Couple League. Tey offer books in English and Spanish about NFP.

Natural Family Planning is a term for methods of planning children that do not include condoms, hormonal birth control, implants, or pulling out.

Here are some methods of NFP:

Sympto-Thermal: cervical mucous and basal body temperature are charted to predict when fertile periods are likely.

Marquette: Basal Body Temperature and cervical positions are charted. May also include cervical mucous. Also makes use of ovulation tests to assure that fertility is high or low.

I use a Marquette method. We only abstain 8-10 days per month. Having sex during a period can still result in conception if the woman’s cycle is short enough. Conception won’t happen during menstruation, but it can happen only a few days after if the sperm stick around.

Hope that helps.

I think mildly amusing was my aim. 😃

My wife used to have such terrible pain during that time of the month until the children were born and afterwards she was very happy with them as that terrible pain was no more. Unfortunately I think some women use it as a free week to be unfriendly towards their husbands, it is like sleeping in stinging nettles no matter how much I do for her.

It is necessary, to avoid sin, to accept children if they occur, but it is not necessary to be fertile or to be in the fertile period. It is necessary to use the proper natural act and deposit reproductive fluid.

From Address to Midwives, Pope Pius XII:The reason is that marriage obliges the partners to a state of life, which even as it confers certain rights so it also imposes the accomplishment of a positive work concerning the state itself. In such a case, the general principle may be applied that a positive action may be omitted if grave motives, independent of the good will of those who are obliged to perform it, show that its performance is inopportune, or prove that it may not be claimed with equal right by the petitioner—in this case, mankind.
The matrimonial contract, which confers on the married couple the right to satisfy the inclination of nature, constitutes them in a state of life, namely, the matrimonial state. Now, on married couples, who make use of the specific act of their state, nature and the Creator impose the function of providing for the preservation of mankind. This is the characteristic service which gives rise to the peculiar value of their state, the bonum prolis. The individual and society, the people and the State, the Church itself, depend for their existence, in the order established by God, on fruitful marriages. Therefore, to embrace the matrimonial state, to use continually the faculty proper to such a state and lawful only therein, and, at the same time, to avoid its primary duty without a grave reason, would be a sin against the very nature of married life.

Serious motives, such as those which not rarely arise from medical, eugenic, economic and social so-called “indications,” may exempt husband and wife from the obligatory, positive debt for a long period or even for the entire period of matrimonial life. From this it follows that the observance of the natural sterile periods may be lawful, from the moral viewpoint: and it is lawful in the conditions mentioned. If, however, according to a reasonable and equitable judgment, there are no such grave reasons either personal or deriving from exterior circumstances, the will to avoid the fecundity of their union, while continuing to satisfy to the full their sensuality, can only be the result of a false appreciation of life and of motives foreign to sound ethical principles.

There is nothing wrong with a married couple having sex, contraception is the problem.
I believe the saints that were women still had periods during their earthly lives, but correct me if I am wrong.

…if they didn’t I bet much more women would be going full tilt for sainthood. The only thing that ever tempted me with the pill was the idea of skipping periods.

Not true. Joan of Arc, for example. But it is not a function of sanctity. Plenty of women are unable to have periods.

You’ve misunderstood Nelka’s humour, bben.

He didn’t mean that saintly women didn’t have periods. He meant that one would hope that saintly women wouldn’t be unpleasant and difficult to live with at that time, due to their saintliness.

Some saints, as some non-saints, don’t have periods. It can be a hormonal problem, it is more usually because of not eating enough and/or exercising too hard.

I think everyone’s pretty much said everything, so I’d like to add only this:

Sex IS for making babies. Whether or not a baby is made, is up to God, in His goodness, who gave women natural cycles of fertility and infertility.

Keep in mind: sex IS for making babies, JUST LIKE the eye is made for seeing, or the ear is made for hearing.

The fact that it’s pleasurable, is just a bonus. Just like watching something funny or happy is pleasurable, or hearing music we like is pleasurable.

I should add, that of course sex is not a “casual” thing like an eye or ear. It powerfully unites husband and wife and allows them to give themselves a chance to be a part of creation, something God only can do. Therefore, sex should not be treated as a simple, trivial matter. If that makes sense, lol.

I find many women (myself included) are actually more sensitive at that time of the month. Many women need more hugs and love and are the direct opposite of aggressive. 🙂 So glad your wife is doing better now.
