In trying to provide support for the OP, you have insulted the rest of us that happen to wear jeans! You stated your were judged, too…was that because of your actual clothes or your attitude towards those who didn’t dress as you do (perhaps those that wore modest jeans…)?

What most of the posters on here have said is to not go “full costume” as though she’s on set with an 1880’s theater troupe or a member of the FLDS; instead choosing to keep part of the prairie look, but make it more contemporary with some accessories.
And I’ve stated I don’t LIKE contemporary. I don’t like modern. I don’t like pants, I don’t like skirts over the ankles, I do not LIKE modern clothes, but has anyone listened? no! I want to wear what they wore in the 1800’s, because modern clothes are ugly! I don’t WANT to “update” the look, I don’t want to make it mainstream or modern. Talk about RUINING something BEAUTIFUL! After i rejected the first suggestion, the rest of you should have got it!

Maybe I will just dress like a fundamentalist Protestant. They seem to be a lot more accepting of me than YOU are.

MIguelita, I’m sorry that you want the thread closed because I think your feelings have been hurt. I don’t really think that’s what people intend to do here. We’re just trying to give you some different perspectives. If you love this clothing for the reason that it makes you feel confident and happy, then wear it proudly. We’re just trying to tell you that you need to prepare to receive some attention, but if you like it enough, then simply defend it. Defend it here and defend it in real life. We were also just trying to show you that there are ways to use elements of this antiquated style but in a more modern fashion, which might spare you some glares and comments. But look at Tavi Gevinson. She’s a young, precocious fashion blogger who got her start by posting some rather bizarre outfits online. In a short amount of time, she was being invited to high fashion shows by designers from all over the world. It’s all in how carry yourself.

You may want to examine your investment (pun intended) in your dress. I can’t judge your motivations/time spent vs. your progress toward sanctification. You sound young- young people tend be more into fashion (whatever kind it is) in hopes of finding place, identity and purpose. But just like a police man’s uniform the outfit does not make you a police officer.

I would examine what you hope to gain- why you want to dress so out of fashion?
And whether or not your dress is hindering your sanctification.

And yes- many people let their clothes, cars and possessions become who they shoudl be by actions/beliefs. Happens all the time.

Because it’s pretty, and modern clothes are ugly. Simple as that.

You might find more like minded people on Etsy. Obviously you (and I) are not the only ones that find this style of dress appealing or CattleKate’s wouldn’t even be in business.

Who will employ you? A history museum? Maybe get into re-enacting. They’d love you and you’d have an outlet- but really if you dress like you want you will be marginalized.

Might as well do something more important to be marginalized- like something for the faith.

Fair enough, but please keep in mind that you asked for opinions here (whether explicitly or implicitly due to the nature of forums). You received some opinions. You can dress however you want in the real world. I think people here were concerned that you were doing this as a statement of faith to the outside world. If you’re doing this because these clothes are the absolute most beautiful to you, then that’s not something that you have to justify to others. Just wear them.

I think you were looking for everyone to really agree with you and cheer you on, and you got upset when that didn’t happen. I must say that I am a little surprised that you find all modern clothing ugly–I’m not trying to talk you into modern clothes, I’m just surprised by this. There is a lot of beautiful clothing. I’m not trying to be unkind, but maybe in the Oklahoma (I think that’s where you said you are), you don’t get to always see a big fashion variation. I’m sure OK has its stylish folks, but it’s not like a city atmosphere. Modern does not have to equal trashy or conformist. I’m just surprised that of all the stores and designers you can still say that you think it’s all ugly.

Excuse me, but you need to calm down and quite ranting. You came onto an internet forum and posed a question. If you are not mature enough to deal with people’s opinions on things, you need to take a step back and not engage in such things in the first place.

NEXT, I didn’t say YOU should add contemporary accessories, I simply replied to the person that was ranting at others and insulting them that the majority of the previous suggestions to you were to make it a little modern.

Etsy is a good suggestion. UrbanOutfitters, which I really like, has some cool, different types of clothing. Sure, you’ll find normal jeans and whatnot, but I’ve bought everything from jeans and tees to really unique, elegant dresses there. Also, Anthropologie and Madewell have elegant classy clothing with a bit of a unique flair. Those places can get a little expensive, though.

I’m just tired of rejoining and rejoining this forum over and over again HOPING to FINALLY see what the appeal of it is, only to see more judgmental, fire-and-brimstone, YOU’RE not a good Catholic BS than I get from my inlaws church. No wonder so many people leave the church, if THIS is the sense of “community” they endorse!

By the way, OPINIONS does not equal an open opportunity to call someone UGLY. that’s CRUEL.

They ARE. ALL of them. I HATE them.

Forgive me for actualyl hoping to find a sense of community, love, and family in the church. It’d be nice to find that SOMEWHERE in my life, and everyone SAYS Christians are all about love. OH WELL. Guess it’s all a lie, like everything else is. SO much for feeling Like I can be ACCEPTED as a PART of something.

If someone called you ugly, then that’s very rude, but I don’t think that happened here. No one knows what you look like. By the way, I’m kind of a forum outsider myself. I’m the loyal, respectful opposition on many topics.

“Part of being modest and feminine is dressing in a way that makes you look beautiful, and wearing costume-ish clothing simply is not feminine nor beautiful. Rather, it’s weird and off-putting.”

translation- YOU CAN’T BE PRETTY IF YOU DRESS THAT WAY, SO YOU MUST BE UGLY.

You called modern clothes ugly etc. I am not offended, but just pointing out you are doing what you accuse others of.

I’m sorry that you feel someone implied that your choice of clothes are ugly. It is hard to find a community on the web to feel at home in. I would caution you about going to a more traditional forum just because they have an affinity for the same kind of clothing- you will find more fire and brimstone and judging going on there then we’ve ever had a CAF. (been there, encountered that).

Sometimes when I get into a debate that’s going nowhere on CAF, I just take a break (days or a week) and spend some time in prayer and reflection. Praying for those that I’ve been hurt by, by those I might have hurt with my words, by those that were judgmental to me and those that may have felt I’ve judged them.

I am praying for you to find peace with this right now.

Well, then wear what you want, but if you’re getting this upset on the Internet (towards people who have mostly just taken the time to try to give opinions) then I don’t know how you’re going to deal with people who are going to openly comment on you in real life, but you better find a way to deal with it because if you look like you just came out of the 1800s, people (and I disagree with anyone who mocks another’s self-expression) are going to make comments.

Also, I’d question whether you hate modern clothing or the people and ideals that you associate with modern clothing.

Good luck. It sounds like you think it’s you vs. the forum, but we’re trying to help you out (at least I am) or else we wouldn’t be bothering to type anything.

As an aside looking for people to be Christ to you, is a waste of time. Been there, done that-
pray. I know we are to Christ to each other, but that rarely happens- not saying disagreeing with your fashion choice is unchristian as you seem to be stating.

Start with yourself- be charitable and patient with others.

HAAHA I doubt it. Over the last three years, do you have any idea how many things CAF members have told me I’m going to hell for?

Calling me UGLY sure seems un Christian.
