From Joseph:

I prophesy in the name of the Lord God of Israel, unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted, and there will not be so much as a potsherd left . . . " (History of the Church, vol. 5, p. 394).

From Joseph F. Smith:

“Now, we are told in scriptures that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God in the flesh. Well, now for the benefit of the older ones, how are children begotten? I answer just as Jesus Christ was begotten of his father …Jesus is the only person who had our Heavenly Father as the father of his body.” (Joseph F. Smith, Family Home Evening Manual, 1972, p. 125, 126).

From Bruce R. McKonkie:

“The Father is a glorified, perfected, resurrected, exalted man who worked out his salvation by obedience to the same laws he has given to us so that we may do the same,” (Bruce R. McConkie, A New Witness for the Articles of Faith, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1985, p. 64).
“Man and God are of the same race, and it is within the power of righteous man to become like his Father, that is to become a holy Man, a Man of Holiness,” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 465-466).

From Orson Pratt:

“God promised in the year 1832 that we should, before the generation then living had passed away, return and build up the City of Zion in Jackson County…We believe in these promises as much as we believe in any promise ever uttered by the mouth of Jehovah. The Latter-day Saints just as much expect to receive a fulfillment of that promise during the generation that was in existence in 1832 as they expect that the sun will rise and set to-morrow. Why? Because God cannot lie. He will fulfill all His promises. He has spoken, it must come to pass.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 362).

From Woodruff:

“If there were a point where a man in his progression could not proceed any further, the very idea would throw a gloom over every intelligent and reflecting mind. God himself is increasing in knowledge, power and dominion, and will do so, worlds without end. It is just so with us.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 120).

From Joseph Fielding Smith:

Joseph Fielding Smith: “That negro race, for instance, have been placed under restrictions because of their attitude in the world of spirits, few will doubt. It cannot be looked upon as just that they should be deprived of the power of the Priesthood without it being a punishment for some act, or acts, performed before they were born.” (The Way to Perfection, p. 43).

“Ham, through Egyptus, continued the curse which was placed upon the seed of Cain. Because of that curse this dark race was separated and isolated from all the rest of Adam’s posterity before the flood, and since that time the same condition has continued, and they have been ‘despised among all people.’ This doctrine did not originate with President Brigham Young but was taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith … we all know it is due to his teachings that the negro today is barred from the Priesthood.” (The Way to Perfection, p. 110-111).

From John Taylor:

after the flood we are told that the curse that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham’s wife, as he had married a wife of that seed. And why did it pass through the flood? Because it was necessary that the devil should have a representation a upon a the earth as well as God… " (Journal of Discourses, vol. 22, p. 304).

It will be interesting to see how all these “prophecies” are confronted with modern day reality!

"Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the “whore of Babylon” whom the Lord denounces… as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. And any person who shall be so wicked as to receive a holy ordinance of the gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent of the unholy and impious act. If any penitent believer desires to obtain forgiveness of sins through baptism, let him beware of having any thing to do with the churches of apostate Christendom, lest he perish in the awful plagues and judgments, denounced against them. The only persons among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who have authority from Jesus Christ to administer any gospel ordinance are those called and authorized among the Latter-day Saints. Before the restoration of the church of Christ to the earth in the year 1830, there have been no people on the earth for many generations possessing authority from God to minister gospelordinances. We again repeat. Beware of the hypocritical false teachers and imposters of Babylon! - Apostle Orson Pratt The Seer, Vol.2, No.4, p.255
The question is: were the catholics and protestants behaving like christians in Europe, asia, africa, america etc. I have already brought up the religious wars that engulfed europe for years and years. Catholics and protestants killing each other in the name of god. I am sure that god was not too pleased with that. How many innocent people were killed?

Then of course we have religious intolerance in europe where religious groups were persecuted for believing diffiferent. Not to mention what happened to the indians by god fearing whites who went to church on sunday and killed indians during the week. I am sure that god was not to happy about that too. A lot of crimes were commited in the name of god. See my point?

Of course posting quotations from second hand sources is wonderful, especially when we can not see what came before or after the quote. We seem to thrive on lacking context. But that is okay. I really don’t expect anything better. 🙂

“The Roman Catholic, Greek, and Protestant church is the great corrupt ecclesiastic power, represented by great Babylon which has made all nations drunk with her wickedness, and she must fall, after she has been warned with the sound of the everlasting gospel. Her overthrow will be by a series of the most terrible judgments which will quickly succeed each other, and sweep over the nations where she has her dominion, and at last she will be utterly burned by fire, for thus hath the Lord spoken. Great, and fearful, and most terrible judgments are decreed upon these corrupt powers, the nations of modern Christendom; for strong is the Lord God who shall execute His fierce wrath upon them, and He will not cease until He has made a full end, and until their names be blotted out from under heaven.” - Apostle Orson Pratt, Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, p.84 - p.85
And so, there was a restoration of the gospel according to the mormons. But the question still remains: Was christianity lacking charity in its history as it delt with difference? There was a lot of bloodshed in europe and among the colonies as native populations were forced to convert. Or as in europe where different christians killed each other for no reason at all. And then of course we have the political corruption and intrigues throughout christian europe. Could god have been a little disappointed with churches doing such things in his name?

Dunno. I did not live in that timeframe to see what was going on and why. I am surprised that you did live back then and can question the ethics of a different era and country. I am envious.

The point is, the hatred shown by LDS leaders is scary.

I posted the sources and even the pages. I would expect that, should you have questions about what came before and after, you would look it up. But that is ok, I really don;t expect anything better

Maybe. After all,m many wars were fought in the OT in God’s name. But, again, since you were apparently there (based on your willingness to judge an entirely different epoc and culture), you tell me

You know, I do see your point. And I daresay Benedict XVI sees your point too! Christ predicted that sins would be committed by members of the Church, but promised that the Church would remain on earth in spite of that:

Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. (Matt 13:18-30)

In any era, no matter when, when sins were committed by Christians you will find others in the Church who recognize and seek to correct those errors. We believe that there will be both wheat and tares in the Church. We also believe, that for the sake of the wheat, God will not take the Church from the earth even when the chaff seem to dominate. That is what this parable teaches. The Church can fully acknowledge the sins of its members - indeed it must, since it is part of the Church’s duty to call sinners to repentance. But Christ here is warning us against accepting the very assumption you are making - that the presence of sinners in the Church indicates and absence of holiness from the Church as a whole. If that were the case, then Christ’s parable would be untrue, and his promises defeated.

Whether or not, christ promised that the church would remain on earth is a matter of interpretation of which many protestant sects would disagree with you. I think that when one looks at christian history and see the political intrigues and how these political intrigues led to corruption, war and death, one can speculate that god was not too pleased. And so, the question is: did the protestant and catholic church lead with the hearts of men and not with the heart of god? And if the christian church lead with the hearts of men, it would be in apostacy.

Joseph Smith claimed, I believe, that churches were lead by some truth but not the complete truth. And if he was correct, there would be an apostacy.

And this is where the human imagination plays its role. I wouldn’t say that it was hatred but it was a warning. But the point still remains: were they correct? It is easy to paste and post quotations without context, but was what they said true?

Now that would be an interesting dialogue. 🙂

You can read all about it in the history books. Use your imagination by seeing yourself there at that time as you read the history and ask yourself what would you have done? Kill protestants because they were protestants because the king or queen said so for the good of the faith?

Imagination is wonderful. Also tom, when I read your posts, I can see a similiarity with the mormon apostates during the time of Joseph Smith. Can you see yourself persecuting mormons and calling for their destruction? Again, the imagination is wonderful as we attempt to see are own would be role in the past happening.
