Today in the news, one company shows huge improvements in heart repair using adult stem cells (Google link). Meanwhile, another company that dealt with embryonic stem cells is ending its research (Google link).
I was so mad listening to a news on the radio report these two events. They never mentioned the company behind the heart repair study or that they used adult stem cells, but they did report that Geron did embryonic research. They basically made the implication that Geron and embryonic stem cells were behind the progress with heart muscle repair. Furthermore, they implied that because Geron was shutting down embryonic stem cell research that breakthroughs like this won’t be possible in the future. I don’t know if it was just bad reporting or they intentionally slanted their wording to fit their agenda. Either way, it really bothered me.
