No, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery disagree with Fanny Alger, her parents, and her brother.
Oliver and Joseph had a huge fallen out. And yet, Joseph Smith showed no concern that his cover could be blown. You would think that if Joseph and oliver were conartists, Joseph would have treated Oliver with kid gloves. But no, he was quite aggressive with oliver and excommunicated him. Doesn’t seem like Joseph was that concerned that oliver would spill the beans…and what is the meaning of that?

There was no fraud 🙂 can be the assumption.

Martin died a mormon. Oliver could have been mistaken. I only know that fanny’s parents saw no nasty affair. I provided a link. Oliver also was not that friendly with Joseph in 1838. Humans say stupid things in the heat of the moment.
Ah…so when people say bad things about Joseph, it was only because they were angry…

They could stay LDS but still have caught Joseph. But you would have to believe those two lied and Joseph was honest. But we already know Joseph was a liar because he denied polygamy.

So…?

And they went into apostasy. But oliver repented and returned to the lds church after Joseph was murdered. He never denied his testimony nor what he saw or his experience with the book of mormon.

Apostasy is not a mormon concept. Catholics can also be apostate.
The whole reason the Mormons say there needed to be a restoration is because the early church was in apostasy.

I am pointing out that based on the Mormon defintion of apostasy, then the LDS church is too.

If that is the case, how can you claim that apostasy is the reason the CC needed to be restored and Mormonism is the way to do that?

It doesn’t matter if OC came back to the church. Mormons claim that dissention is proof that the early Church is not true. Fine. Then the Mormon church is not true either.

Also JS claimed he held a church together…no, early members fell away.

yes…a lot of them did.

Did you know OC and Joseph were related?

The COC considered itself the original mormon church. And so, they would trace their origins as the lds church would to the same people. This is where you are getting confused. There was no split when JS was alive. Both JSjr and Oliver were the first and second elders of the lds church.
Okay, let me see if I understand this: There are two churches created at the same time, by the same two church leaders; and although they have some similarities, they also have some major differences.

How does one person know which of the two churches is the original church that Joseph Smith created?

So it is possible that the RLDS is the original church and the LDS church is the spinoff? How can the LDS church claim to be the original church, when it was created at the same time?

Unless I am mistaken, I thought I read in another thread that the early LDS church believed in monotheism (Doctrine & Covenants 20:17, 19, 28,) which the RLDS church still believes in.

Okay, let me try it again. The lds church was organized and continued under Joseph Smith until he was murdered. A few years later the Reorganized Church was organized. This church traced its roots back to Joseph Smith as the lds church did. Same roots but different churches. 🙂

So, who to believe…oliver or fanny’s parents and brother. You decide. 🙂

Third cousins? Can you tell me the name of one of your third cousins? However, that did not stop JS from kicking Oliver out. 🙂
Jason, Eric, Andrew, Amy and Tad. To name a few. Last names omited to protect the innocent.👍

Well that seems like a matter of your opinion, please provide some kind of reference. Because, according to the RLDS, they started in 1830. So according to them, they “were organized” in 1830.

Again, how can either church claim to be the true church?

Let’s see, parents wanting to protect their daughter or an eye witness.

I choose to believe your bastions of integrity- Martin Harris and OC

Kelly, Mike and Dana to name three. And I once kicked my brother out of my house…so?

It just reinforces that all the first LDS were as interelated as an Arkansas Family Tree

Bill, I can name some 3rd cousins, but not many. I know I can name far fewer than I have! 😉 The ones I know are Kathy and Keith. And my children have met THEIR children, all 4th cousins. But it is rare these days. It takes a lot of work to hold a family together.

But Mormons can’t truthfully claim to be any better. Despite all their emphasis on family and historical records of their ancestors, they’re just as good as the rest of us (meaning, not so good) at being aware of their more distant relations in the present day.

Just as an example, I once worked with a local Mormon group on a theatrical production where we solicited, as part of that production, family trees that linked their family back to a “Mormon Pioneer”. The point was to dedicate the theatrical production to those persons who were the real pioneers as opposed to the fictional ones portrayed in the show.

An unexpected side effect of our solicitation of these names was that we introduced 3rd, 4th & 5th cousins to eachother, people who may have known eachother, but were never previously aware that they were related. I was the one that compiled the names for the program so I was the one that introduced the various cousins to eachother so I know for a fact that this happened.

Are you insinuating that the 2 of the 3 witnesses are not to be believed?

You seem to be implying that they lacked character - is that true?

The two men who were the witnesses of the BoM and original founders of the Mormon church are not to be believed in their testimony regarding FA but were otherwise honest men?

That is interesting, due to their interest in their family histories I had always considered the members of the LDS to be very close in family relations. The LDS that I have known have always had very good core family relations and family values, but I never did have any experience with their extended families. This may be more of a “local” type of culture thing rather than faith based however.

Well, this all happened in southern California, where there are more Mormons than the entire state of Utah…

I think the bottom line is that families forge their own ties, and it has nothing to do with faith. I wouldn’t for a minute ever believe that one faith has some advantage over another because there is no evidence of that. In the case of Mormons, they appear to be focused on the dead, not the living. As such, they are just as informed about their living relations as anyone else.

Well, Bill, you almost hit the nail on the head and your are correct about mormon family values. But if you listen to the antimormon catholic posters on the mormon threads, mormons are rock throwers at former members, they throw eggs at people’s houses, they shun their loved ones, and follow a liar and snitch to their bishop about what other members are doing.

I would go with your own observations, if I were you.

whyme - if you accuse me of lying one more time I will have to report you. If you want the facts I will give them to you privately. Otherwise, stop.

Your belittling is most unbecoming.

I don’t think so. Mormons have strong ties to their families. They tend to pray together as a family in the morning during family prayer and in the evening for family prayer. They also say grace over breakfast, lunch and dinner as a family if the family is together for the meal. They also can read scripture together as a family, especially on Monday night.

And they build strong family bonds with one another. But yes, they do do baptism for the dead and they do do family history by trying to find their ancestors because they love them too.

Quite an amazing people, those mormons. 🙂
