Personally, I would say no because God’s love is perfect, infinite and he loves the worst sinner as much as the greatest saint.

That friend is the defenitive answer:thumbsup: But also because it is A Commandment. “Keep holy the sabbath day.” So it is a JUST expetiation. God’s love is also unconditional 😃

Actually a question like that I would turn it around and tell your friend

“By going to Church we show God how much we love Him”, also by the acts of love and mercy we do everyday in His Holy Name.

God loves us totally and uncondictionally, it is as plain as the nose on your face, He gave His only Son so we would have eternal life, can anyone love more then that? Humans reject God’s love when we fail to love Him in our daily lives.

Too many people look to God to give them (more) love, He clearly does that already. We must show and give our full love to Him.

Hence it follows that He loves more the better things.

He can and does love us all the more if we out of love return to Him:
“Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep. I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance”

He is a jealous God : Thou shall have no other gods before Me. So yes he can be torqued(angry) . Remeber He is the God of justice not just love and mercy! And no we can never repay Him for everything He’s given us.So there can be no such thing as quid pro quo.

Joy and love are not the same thing, so your use of this scripture here is unclear to me. :hmmm:

Do you mean to imply by your use of this quote in this way that in the parable of the Prodigal Son that the father loved the prodigal son after he returned home more than he loved his elder son who had remained at his side?

See, when I first heard this question I thought somewhat along these lines.
As a human, if there were people who worshipped us every Sunday we would certainly come to love those people more than the ones who didn’t. You see things like this in Communist countries or countries with a Dictatorship. The more “loyal” the citizen the more the leader “loves” the person and the more “perks” they get. But, God is above that. He is not bound by human emotions (though Jesus has shown us that he grieves with us and laughs with us) and not bound by our inclination to favoritism. It helped put into perspective for me our tendency, as humans, to put God into a box with ideas such as “He’ll love us more if we go to church every Sunday.”

Love is a cardinal virtue and, indeed, joy is listed as one of its fruits. Or, if one likes, one can look at it from the Holy Spirit side and say that both charity and joy are listed in the twelve fruits of the HS. Imagine what we will be like in heaven, overflowing with joy, love, gentleness, etc. 🙂 Our joy in heaven will be full, even though we will not have as much joy as the Virgin Mary, I imagine, since she is graced more than us.

But you were talking about God, not us. God is full of love; he IS love. We, his creatures, can increase in love, grace, etc.

Of course, that is not to say that things cannot be said to please God, or that he doesn’t reward those who seek him.

You didn’t answer my question about the Prodigal Son.

Right. And the reason the worst sinners won’t make it to Heaven isn’t because God doesn’t love them, but because they don’t love God.

Ah, we finally agree on something! Although your mass is my Holy Eucharist service I still agree with you tht this is the way we will certainly learn to love God more. My priest’s homilies are very interesting and very well prepared.

Being in the Real Presence of Christ is more important than the quality of the homilies, although we must give thanks to God when the homilies also happen to be worth hearing. 🙂

It is those homilies that are responsible for keeping our focus on the Real Presence of Christ and how to be open to love God more and see his goodness through all of the sin and ugliness of this world. Holy Eucharist service on Sunday morning is what fuels me up for the week ahead.

A good homily in a place where there is no actual Real Presence of Christ is of no use to anyone. 😉
 
Pug. it seems that"more joy in Heaven over the one repented sinner than the ninety nine righteous" answers the question, and I didn’t know this particular scripture verse pertained to the prodigal son. Wasn’t this about the one lost sheep? Although it could be the same.

Yes, since it is the church that will save us and not the bible.

Confused? The church which is mentioned a gazillion times as a means of salvation, a visible organization established by Jesus Christ who is Head and His church is the Body, which will save us.
