Anyone take a look at this yet?

religions.pewforum.org/

I haven’t read the entire thing yet, but what I’ve read so far is interesting. It appears that the US is a country of strong faith in God, but also pluralistic and diverse.

I’ll summarize some of the key findings.

79% of Catholics believe that many religions lead to eternal life.

And 77% of Catholics believe there is more than one way to interpret the teachings of their religion. Both numbers are a bit higher than the national average.

97% of Catholics believe in God, but only 60% believe in a personal God (someone with whom you can have a relationship). 29% believe God is an impersonal force and 8% don’t know. These numbers are about the same as the national average.

When asked if they were absolutely certain about God’s existence, 72% of Catholics answered yes, which is about the national average.

56% of Catholics say religion is very important to their lives. This is also the national average.

42% of Catholics say they attend services at least once per week. This is slightly higher than the average.

58% of Catholics pray daily, which is slightly above the national average. 79% of Catholics pray at least once weekly and 36% meditate at least once weekly. Both numbers are roughly the national average.

62% of Catholics believe the Bible is the word of God. This is about the same as the national average.

82% of Catholics believe in Heaven, which is a bit above the national average. But only 60% of Catholics believe in Hell, which is the national average.

34% of Catholics see conflict between modernity and religion, which is below the national average. 43% of Catholics say values are threatened by Hollywood, which is about the national average.

45% of Catholics say abortion should be illegal in all cases, which is about the national average. Both numbers correlate with frequency of church service attendance: those who attend weekly or more often are also more likely to be opposed to all abortion.

30% of Catholics say homosexuality is a way of life that should be discouraged by society. This is below the national average. Again, both numbers rise with the frequency of church attendance.

If those statistics are accurate, then many of them are very sad to see.

Of course, a problem is that many of the people polled here are probably only Catholic by birth or culture. I would imagine that if the study was restricted to those who attended Mass regularly, it would be quite different.

It appears that the survey does reflect those who do and do not attend church regularly because the numbers change depending on church attendance. People who attend Mass more regularly have a stronger rate of disapproval for abortion and homosexuality.

Other than that, it seems that Catholics are not very different from the rest of America regarding religious attitudes

The survey has some very strange findings. I don’t find it to be credible. For instance 5 % of atheists BELIEVE in a personal God. 12 % of atheists believe in heaven.
About 9% of Catholics “don’t know if there is a God”
48% of Catholics believe that abortion should be legal.
18% of Catholics do not believe in heaven.

The stat that stands out to me is that 58% of those that said they were Catholic do not go to Mass on Sunday. These folks are clearly not practicing Catholics and that would explain why 48% believe abortion should be legal and 18% do not believe in heaven
They really should poll outside of Church on Sunday to find out what practicing Catholics believe and not those, for all intent and purpose, have left the Church.

I find that weird. I thought the definition of atheist is a person who does not believe in a God, much less a personal God.

I wonder if some people answered sarcastically and the pollsters took it as a real answer. That would explain it. I have definitely heard of atheists mocking faith by listing some mortal person as their deity of choice. The recently departed George Carlin did that (may his soul have found salvation).

*Is this another Pew Study? Pew funds prochoice groups so any

survey they would produce would have to be scrutinized.*
