Separation of Church and State is a two-way street.

From the link, the state says that if a religious institution offers a public service, they cannot discriminate. So, if the Church operates a food bank, no one can be denied food on the basis of gender, race, or anything else civil rights laws protect.

I believe the solution is for Catholic Charities to only offer adoption services to Catholic families. They can still offer services to children publicly, as a foster care or orphanage service, as they wouldn’t discriminate against gay children, if such would ever need their services.

However, in the case of the adoption controversy in Illinois and other states of the US, Catholic Charities wished to be a government contractor providing services on behalf of the state. As such, they needed to conform to state guidelines. When those guidelines changed so that homosexual couples could not be discriminated against by its contractors, Catholic Charities have chosen to opt out.

If Catholic Charities wants to run a private adoption agency, they are free to do so. However, they will not receive government funding. Because of that, Catholic Charities have decided that they don’t have the financial means to operate. The closure of Catholic Charities adoption services really is about funding, and the lack of donations from Catholics to keep the programs in operation.

Humm… interesting enough Catholics pay quite a bit on taxes. the government can distribute those funds to promote evil with the money from Catholics yet when it comes to fund for the good of Catholics, goverment is absent.

A large segment of the population in any democracy likely disagrees with how the government spends taxes. Occasionally, protests are held against specific policies and some individuals go so far as to refuse to pay the portion of his or her taxes which funds that policy I don’t recommend that last tactic, however in a democracy we do have the ability to influence our legislators to create policy we agree with.

The more that a government intrudes into private lives and private institutions through big spending and trillion of dollars of electronic money, the less say that any institution has in developing its own ideas and values.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen. The bigger the government, the smaller the church.

You get a loan from the government to go to school, the government owns your opinion. A school accepts government money, or even the money of students going to that school, the government insists on having a say in that school. Just ask Hillsdale College about that one.

I think that is accurate in reference to foster care, since the children involved are wards of the government. However, most states of the US allow private adoption agencies which do not accept government money and operate outside of anti-discrimination laws. One example is Bethany Family Services of Mississippi which, until a few years ago, refused to allow Catholic families to adopt children. They were able to do so because the did not take government money. Ultimately they changed their policy, not because the government insisted on it, but because the national Bethany organization pressured them to do so in the face of bad publicity.

Very good, clear explanation of the issues involved in this case. Not EVERYTHING done by the government is intentionally anti-Catholic, anti-Christian, antisemitic, or anti-religion.
