As sex abuse scandals rock the Vatican, the results of an investigation into a rich, ultra-conservative and secretive Roman Catholic order founded by a priest accused of pedophilia and incest are due to be filed in Rome on Monday.
The sordid story of the Legion of Christ, whose late founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, was a close ally of Pope John Paul II before being forcibly retired by the Vatican in 2006, is a microcosm of the crisis currently enveloping the church…
“Dan Brown got the wrong group,” said Genevieve Kineke, an orthodox Catholic who was a member of Regnum Christi, the legion’s lay movement, from 1992 to 2000 and writes a blog about her experiences. “The Legion of Christ is the scary cult embedded in the bosom of the mother church. Not Opus Dei.”

Seriously. What is the point of posting OLD defamatory news? What is your honest motive for doing so? It must be love. Yeah, that’s it. Thanks for letting us poor Catholics know that sin exists among our ranks. Now why don’t you go dig up the dirt on whatever sect, cult or tribe it is that you fail to identify as your own. Afterall, it’s just good fun…right? Sad.

Wow, unafraid. The article date is 3/14/2010. There is no reason to attack NewEnglandPries for posting a current news article. 😦

The article is from yesterday. This is a Catholic News forum. I am a Catholic.
My honest motive was discussion about Catholic news. I’m sure this board has members with a wide variety of opinions on the Legionaries and what decisions the Pope should make regarding their future.

Do you know much about them? I had heard the name before, but that is about it. The founder sounds awful, but I’m hoping that his acts were not perpetuated in the seminaries and priests of the order.

The story is old. Yesterday’s rehashing was already discussed ad nauseum. The guy has a handle that begs a query. New England Pries?! Where may I ask is the “t” which completes that name? And, now, after I inquire, you suddenly admit to being Catholic. I do not believe it. Some people are too clever. This person is neither a priest, nor a Catholic. But, as a sign that I am a charitable man, NewEnglandPries( ), let’s drop this overindulgence on the sins of the church, and focus on the Passion of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is your Savior too, isn’t he…NewEnglandPries…?

Wow, what’s wrong? Can’t handle someone else’s opinion? Realize that there is a severe problem within our faith and it has to be dealt with urgently.

Firstly: That is the second time that the slang term ,“wow”, has been used in response to my retort to New EnglandPries( ). Shouldn’t there be a “one wow rule” per thread. But, to answer the questions: No, nothing is wrong, however, as to the second question…I do not recall NewEngland Pries( ) stating an opinion in this instance.

Apostolic Visitation Ends. Legion of Christ Awaits Results
By Sandro Magister – 3/16/2010**
Chiesa (chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it)**It will be the Vatican authorities who decide what to do. The three cardinals charged with the case are Tarcisio Bertone, secretary of state, William J. Levada, prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith, and Franc Rodé, prefect of the congregation for institutes of consecrated life.

But the last word will belong to Benedict XVI, the most prescient of all. Even before he was elected pope and when Maciel still had very powerful protectors in the Vatican, Joseph Ratzinger ordered an extensive investigation of the accusations against the founder of the Legionaries. And as pope, on May 19, 2006, he sentenced him to “a retired life of prayer and penance.”

After this sentence, the congregation of the Legionaries bowed to the papal command. But it continued to show veneration to its founding “father,” as an “innocent victim” of false accusations.

Still today, after the eight-month apostolic visit, Maciel’s successor as director general of the congregation, Fr. Álvaro Corcuera, and vicar general Luis Garza Medina – who were also for decades, especially the latter of them, very close collaborators of the founder – show no intention of leaving their command. And neither do any of the other high and mid-level directors, central or peripheral.

Not only more CATHOLIC, but also MORE CURRENT. It’s really a sad story, because the Legion of Christ had some really solid vocations & was teaching a lot of people some really solid & sound doctrine, and many of the people were solid people.

The takaway for me is that ANY of us can end up sinning. We’re all one slip away from becoming a scandal, and when that happens, all of our good will be forgotten. What people will focus on, and what we will go to hell for, will be the scandal. Far better to lead of life dedicated to Christ, Sold out to Him, one that relies on His Grace, because it is only by His Grace that we will avoid falling and causing scandal.

May, just maybe, that’s what we need to learn, that, and to pray, PRAY for our Bishops and our Priests, because if we think we are under assault from the ENEMY, it is NOTHING compared to what the ENEMY throws at them.

Unafraid:

I realize the media has focused on the Catholic Church and has not said a THING about worse problems elsewhere, but that’s no reason not to take care of this, to deal with this manfully. About 22 years ago, I got a speeding ticket, I was following behind another car, and we were both flying along at about 78 mph (nice when you can do that, until you get caught). Well, my LAME bit that “the other driver, the one that he missed” was going even faster, and I was just trying to “Keep up”, just didn’t fly. He gave me a TICKET for doing 70 mph.

It doesn’t matter if this is becoming “Old News” to you. This particular situation isn’t “Old News”, and thanks to the perfidy of some of our Bishops, this “Gift” will keep on giving for some time. When we deal with this appropriately, when we act with Righteousness, Truth and Charity toward all (Esp. those who have been victimized), this will begin to quiet down.

But, It’s a problem everywhere (and it is, and it’s a worse problem in some places than the Catholic Church) Doesn’t excuse not dealing with it forthrightly here.

Didn’t it occur to you that there is a limit to the number of characters permitted in a screen name and that NewEnglandPriest might just have exceeded it by one letter, even when the spaces between the words are removed? That would have been a more charitable construction. And just for the record: “Messages posted to this board must be polite and free of personal attacks”.

I’m sure that many Legionary priests are good and holy people. I also know a priest who left their seminary due to suspicions about things going on that seemed strange.

I disagree. While I agree that any of us can sin and that sin could possibly become a scandal that’s not exactly what happened here. Not many of us are “one slip away” from living double lives for decades that use and abuse multiudes of others.
This wasn’t one slip or a momentary giving in to temptation. Maciel was practically a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
While that doesn’t take away from the good work many Legionaries have done, it does call into question how they are organized and how they use Maciel’s writings.

Here is more information about them:

(March 14) – As sex abuse scandals rock the Vatican, the results of an investigation into a rich, ultra-conservative and secretive Roman Catholic order founded by a priest accused of pedophilia and incest are due to be filed in Rome on Monday…

“Maciel was a sexual criminal of epic proportions who gained the trust of John Paul II and created a movement that is as close to a cult as anything we’ve seen in the church,” said author Jason Berry, one of two reporters who broke the Maciel story in 1997 and who directed a 2008 documentary about the priest called “Vows of Silence.”
