Interpretting the Bible

And that is what is at the core of the issue, how do we know that it is the Holy Spirit that is guiding us? Even if we pray for guidance and wisdom, how do we know that it is God guiding us in our interpretation?

We know that the Church is guarded from staying from the truth, by the promise of Jesus, so if we follow what she teaches we should be safe.
I thought that somewhere it warned about the corruption of the Church within, like with the leaders, not with the dogmas or anything? Is it in Revelations?

Again, we can read and interpret the bible for our edification, but if it leads us astray from the Church and her teachings, then one would have to question if it is the Holy Spirit leading them.
That’s understandable so that the Church can remain safe-guarded.

I posted this in born again thread but I will mention it here also since it is applicable.

To see how the Church interprets different scripture passages, go to the end of the Catechism, and look up the index of citations.
There you will find every scripture passage used in the Catechism ordered by the books of the Bible. If you have a question on a particular passage, look it up and see if it is listed and if it is you can see how the Church has used it in the Catechism.
It will give you a good idea if you are close with your own interpretation

But, if someone was genuinely led by the Holy Spirit, shouldn’t they be in conjunction with what the CC says about the interpretation of the Bible?
None are led completely by the Holy Spirit, for all sin. If one is genuinely led by the Holy Spirit on a particular issue, chances are good he won’t be too far off from the Church’s position on that issue.

As for your question about corruption, certainly there will always be corruption within the Church, for its members are all sinners.

Hello mrs_abbot,

I have a question for you, and I’m not asking it to be combative, but I am truly curious.

If you interpret, prayerfully, a certain passage in one way, (just as an example, the efficacy of infant baptism) and another truly Christian person prayerfully interprets it just the opposite, how do you know who is right? Which interpretation is true?

For committed Catholics, infallibility is truly a gift from God. Truth is very important to God (Satan is the father of lies - John 8:44) and so it seems very logical that God, knowing beforehand all the differing interpretations that would arise, would establish a means to ensure that His Church would teach only the truth.
Code:
Matt. 16:18-19 ...you are Rock and on this Rock I will
build My Church ...I will give you the keys of heaven.
And whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Actually there are only a very few Scripture passages (I can’t remember the number for sure, but it’s in the area of 10) that the Church has definitively said are to be interpreted in a certain way. What the Church does do sis define doctrines; and we are not free to interpret Scripture in a way that would contradict those defined doctrines.

Nita

The Catholic Churches teaches that only the leaders of the Church should interpret the Bible and that’s the interpretation that the members of the Church should believe, am I right?
?
Where the Church interpretation really comes in is when there is a dispute as to the interpretation of Scripture. That is why Jesus founded His Church, so that when there is a question, His Church can settle the dispute Authoritatively. If not for that, Christianity would begin to fracture and everyone’s opinion would lead them to start a new church every few months.😃 This would lead to chaos and within a couple of centuries there would be hundreds or even thousands of different denominations in contradiction to Jesus’ command that “they all may be on” as the Father and Jesus are one.

So, in obedience to Jesus’ command we must remain in communion with the Church which He founded so that such a situation does not occur.

But, if someone was genuinely led by the Holy Spirit, shouldn’t they be in conjunction with what the CC says about the interpretation of the Bible?
Why do you think that the Holy Spirit is leading people as they read the Bible? This isn’t what Jesus said the Spirit was going to do. And if you take a good look at Christianity today you can see that this isn’t the case. The Holy Spirit can only lead peole to truth and there is only one truth. But there are countless versions of supposedly Spirit inspired Bible interpretations out there. The simple fact of the matter is where there is dissention there the Holy Spirit isn’t. The Holy Spirit is with the Church, the institution that has maintained the teachings of the Apostles for 2000 years.

Hi Nita! 👋

It just depends on who was genuinely led by the Holy Spirit, in that case. It’s possible for me to intervene for the guidance of the Holy Spirit but not be sincere or misinterpret what I’m being told and be wrong. If that is the case, I had better research whatever it is that I’m looking for. 😉

Well, I guess one way to determine it would be to have a list of every Christian denominations interpretations of scripture and compare them all one by one.
Or, maybe one could make up a list of interpretations of scripture that they find problems with that the Catholic Church has and then look at all of those individually and again compare and contrast with all the other interpretations available to see what differs and why.
Or, one could eliminate all denominations that have ignored the teachings of Jesus that are in the Bible and leave who is left to compare and contrast with:rolleyes:

Or, one could ask if there is anything contrary to scripture in their denomination and take it from there,

I dunno. There seems to be a variety of ways to tackle this subject. All leading back to one issue in the end really.

There is no contradiction in truth. Therefore anyone claiming to have interpreted scripture correctly yet is not in the Church that was founded by Christ is clearly running contradictory interpretations of scripture right off the bat. I know thats just my take on it and some or many will disagree and say I am wrong. I know, I used to be that person who objected so I expect it.

I also ask why would Christ have set up so many Christians for doom by leaving them with a Church he would have felt could steer them wrong. Surely Christ would not have set up so many Christians for so many years to be led astray like this. Surely he would not have wanted so many martyrs to lay down their very lives to preserve it and keep it going non stop since he left us with it. Surely the gates of hell have not prevailed as he promised, and therefore I go along with Christ, his Church and the Bible not used as my personal tool to read into it what I wish but in humble awe I accept what he gave us in totallity in unison whith all his gifts he gave us, not independent of those gifts. To do otherwise is to reject the very things he gave us, and that I shall never do as I am unworthy to recieve the gifts he freely gave us and should not grumble or complain or think I can find a loophole that suits me better.

I like reading and interpretting the Bible on my own but I’ll admit, I’m no scholar and don’t know it all by far. The Church is a sounding board to turn to for interpretation but I’m always curious what my Protestant brothers and sisters have to say too.
If I get conflicting interpretations or mixed feelings about something, I’m not hesitant to research it and find the Truth. 👍

I like to hear what our Protestant brothers and sisters have to say as well.

I really wish it would be easy to do, but its really not. I dont know if I am alone in this, but even when I was a Protestant I cant say I ever felt I knew each Protestants denomination well enough to clearly state how their interpretation was arrived at and which ones differed from the one I was in.

I am not trying to be glib here, its just that I really did not know. Some faiths really stressed certain verses in the Bible to back up something they practied and others never used that same scripture to demonstrate a particular practice or held to that practice.

So, if it were really that easy I think I would have been easily able to list 'em all off and be confident about all of the interpretations being biblical. I am not saying it cant be done, its just that it was too much for me to bite off. I mean its endless really. All the denominations differ on biblical points that are all somehow either stressed or downplayed and yet all are based on the bible.

I could never be certain who was being led by the Holy Spirit or not, if someone who is Protestant here that is sure let me know how you arrived at that conclusion and let me know if you investigated each and every bible believing faith before feeling that way. Then even if one does come up with “the one” I am still wondering what it means for all the Christians before that “real one” came into being.

I dont think God expected all of us to be Bible Scholars. I also dont think he wanted us to be in constant doubt about who has the Holy Spirit in terms of correct interpretation of the Bible goes either. I think that’s why my time is spent better on worship and guess what? That to me means Mass and the Eucharist first, Bible reading comes after worship. We dont worship a book and we can read it any time we like as often as we like but not above our obligation to worship which always comes first. For he alone is the one worthy of our Worship. Read, study, learn all one wishes as it is good. But we are commanded to worship and thats as simple as it gets. The question is who is Worshipping him with all honor and glory?

I don’t think I could use the Bible to be a teacher. I use it now for guidance and reassurance. I’ve had 12 years of Catholic education to fall back on and help guide me. The Bible is my “road atlas” through life and the CC is the navigator in the passenger seat telling me if where I’m going is the best way to get there. 😃

It can be done but it’d be almost next to impossible and take a large amount of time. If denominations didn’t differ on interpretations, we’d all belong to one Church. 😉 But alas, we are all brothers and sisters through Jesus Christ. Praised be to God for sending Him to redeem the world!!! :clapping: :bounce:

The Bible is such a vast field of knowledge and information that no matter how hard anyone studied, I don’t think anyone could be a bible scholar, unless they dedicated every waking moment to it.
That’s where the Church comes to play as my sounding board. It grounds me when I’m feeling lost.
I’m glad that we’re not alone in our journey through life. We all have different ideas on how to get to Heaven and be with God forever. When I die, I’m going to ask God why things were so confusing here on earth? 😛

Mrs Abbott,

I mean no offense here, but in your last post, am I to assume you put yourself in the driver’s seat?

Its okay if you did, I just never think I am in the drivers seat is all. I mean thats beyond me to do. I think of myself as along for the ride and the driver knows the way to carry the sleigh…
I just knew which sleigh to jump into.

I tried driving in the past, and I always ran out of gas.

Hence the saying "If God is your co-pilot… change seats"

I was trying to do an analogy like the “footprints in the sand” poem. Since I’m the one on the journey to Heaven, it’s nice to have God right beside me in the passenger seat. He’s the navigator telling me where to go. 😃
Maybe my wording wasn’t the best. My mind tends to go faster than I can type. 😛

I like that poem a lot. Remember though that there were times when the driver did not end up driving at all.

But, Lord, see! ALL the times I was at the worst moments in my life there is only ONE set of footprints, where were you Lord?

And Jesus replies: those were the times I Carried You.

I’m crying now, thanks.

So, Mrs Abbott-

If He has ever carried you in your life you were not driving at the time.
And without Him, you would not even know where to go or how to get there.
We see Him we feel Him and recieve Him at Mass where we Worship Him.

He takes care of the other details.

The Bible issues here are things he obviously was aware would take place.
He told us how to handle this. Its a non-issue. Sorry if that sounds flip, but I am being honest here. Heed his direction and dont try to take the wheel.

Here is the way I learned it?

God preceded man
Man preceded religion (Aaron, Leviticus and later the Torah)
Religion preceded the Temple (Salmon)
The Temple preceded Jesus
Jesus preceded the Catholic Church
The Catholic Church preceded the New Testament
The New Testament preceded the “Bible”
The “Bible” as we know it was formed in roughly 340AD
The Bible preceded the Protestants
The Protestants preceded Sola Scriptura

Just an FYI about Bible interpretation catholic.com/library/scripture_tradition.asp

Ya, I guess I forgot that part. 😉 Again, my brain seems to be working at “half speed” these days for some reason. It’s the holidays. That’s my excuse for the rest of this month, anyways. 😛
