Intimacy with Jesus

Hi again, friends,

I need some guidance. I really want to develop a deeper, intimate relationship with Jesus, and I’m confused as how to do it. All of the prayers I pray from my prayer books are formal and “distancing” for me.

I prefer my own informal prayers, but don’t feel they’re appropriate.

Any suggestions and/or positive encouragement would be very appreciated!

I would strongly encourage you to pray with and spiritually reflect upon the significance of Our Lady. Ask Her to see Jesus as She does. She knew Him best and She has never failed to draw me closer to Her Son.
 
Begin to journal spiritually… It’s a good way to cultivate conversation with the Divine

That’s exactly why I posted my question! I write my prayers in my Journals. They’re “semi-formal” but always respectful and reverent. But I have always wondered if they were acceptable to God. A little childlike, if you will, but sincere nonetheless!

Mental prayer is very important.
He’s God. He is a King, but He is also our adopted brother. Do not be afraid to bring your all to Him.
 
You might look into Ignatian contemplation. It’s a way of putting yourself into Jesus’s life and is a great way to get to know him intimately.

Here’s another thought: instead of using words, you could just be with Him. That’s prayer too and the more you are silent in His presence, the more chance He has to show Himself to you. 😊
 
I have never heard of Ignatian contemplation before. Looking up what that is, it sounds very interesting, and a great way of understanding scripture better.
 
Where better, when better to develop a deeper relationship than in His presence at adoration of the blessed Sacrament? If you love someone, you strongly desire to spend time with them. Just go. Sit. Read. Pray. Contemplate Him with the eyes of faith. You cannot help but fall deeper in love.

Three things have helped me immensely. I strive every year to grow closer to Jesus. The Rosary, said slowly and with great meditation; adoration before the Blessed Sacrament; and more frequent Confession (I go every two weeks, up from every month. Eventually I may try weekly).

I think the Divine Mercy chaplet is also wonderful, and I’d like to establish more of a habit of praying it at 3:00 p.m.
 
I agree with much of the above, but relationships also have to be linked to reality. We can find a deeper relationship with our Lord when we minister to the poor and oppressed, as in Mathew 25 -

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

If you “really want to develop a deeper, intimate relationship with Jesus”, go through the Immaculate Heart of His Mother by first developing ‘a deeper, [more] intimate relationship’ with her. And, the best way you can do that is by faithfully and devoutly praying the Most Holy Rosary. 🙂
 
Mental prayer, meditation on the Passion. I suggest reading Mary’s view of the Crucifixion in St. Bridget’s revelations. Ask Jesus tell help you to love Him more and more every day.
