Scary situation. It has been a long-establish U.S. position that we would protect Taiwan. To not respond to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan wouldn’t be a good look for the U.S. That said, I don’t think Taiwan is worth starting WWIII over. No-win situation.

If the Chinese invaded India, the Indians would start lobbing nukes. Another no-win situation.

India likely has nuclear missiles aimed at China, Beijing. That was in the news in the past few months. Hopefully, neither of these big powers would go at it.

There’s also Vietnam. At first, I thought we just had mutual interests with them and the South China Sea but there was recently some economic deal with Vietnam, now I forget if it was them selling or us selling but it was for a big amount.

I doubt if China will stop at Taiwan.

It will go after Vietnam, South Korea, the Kamchatka peninsula, raising the anger of Russia and probably go to war with India, since China also claims Arunachal Pradesh.

It probably would go for Australia and New Zealand too.

If the reports are true, we should already be moving assets into a defensive position to protect Taiwan (RoC).
If they do attack, we should immediately cut off diplomatic relations.

depends on what you mean by “win.” Conquer mainland China? No way. Prevent the conquest of Taiwan? For sure, if we care enough to have a war with China.
 
China already controls Taiwan economically. Why would they ever invade?
 
The problem is with China being the aggressor, in the South China Sea, with it’s belligerent claim on Taiwan, of it’s increasing close incursions into Japanese airspace. How do you stop them apart from military action, would that call their bluff, or start a war, some of the articles I’ve read regarding the South China Sea, even top US brass have said the only way to stop them would be through military action, could the US launch a limited strike against the Chinese without starting all out war, but then again if we don’t do something will they continue their aggressive actions, there’s the conundrum.
 
Taiwan has had to deal with the possibility of Mainland China invading for probably 55 years or so. That tension has always been there.

Dealing with China is always at the forefront with Taiwan, shown how they dealt with the coronavirus with relative success.
 
China also has favorable trade status its India in that it exports more to India than it imports from India.

Yet it didn’t stop China from claiming one of India’s states, Arunachal Pradesh, nor did it stop the border clash that happened just weeks ago.

If you think the US is bad because of its American exceptionalism, China can equal it.

I’ve lived in Japan, South Korea and Thailand. China has always displayed a belligerent and arrogant attitude towards the other Asian nations.
 
I’m sure Trump will do the right thing, no matter what happens. :roll_eyes:
 
I think it’s more likely he’d wuss out and do nothing but tweet. He doesn’t want to be a war time president. And when that is keeping us out of more pointless middle eastern conflicts I support that. But if the Chinese start invading their neighbors they need to be met with overwhelming force and complete economic isolation. Can’t risk going the appeasement route.

If we sit on the sidelines if Taiwan is invaded, will will cease being a relevant world power, much less a superpower.

It’s all fun and games when you elect a reality TV star until someone loses a country.

That’s why I found it so funny at the start of this year when the media was melting down over him supposedly wanting to go to war with Iran. The man isn’t a hawk, and while that’s good to counter balance the people in government and the military that want perpetual war in the Middle East, it does need to be set aside on true threats. This would be one.
