Invincible Ignorance in the Bible?

1 Corinthians 4:4
My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.
This is the passage I have been thinking about for a few days.
Since it is the same author – I wonder if Rom2:15 applies here with “conflicting thoughts”. The conscience condemns murder, and St. Paul certainly did so to other Christians before conversion. But is this really a case of ignorance, or perhaps suppressed conscience? eg. Stephen said nothing which is not found in the scriptures, and for his confrontation was stoned.
