Factually inaccurate on a number of issues.
I am from the north and I see that you are from Enniskillin and a barstool republican at it, with more than a blinkered view of Irish history. I have had friends and family murdered by both republicans and loyalists so you are in absolutely no position to lecture me on anything especially the morallity (or lack of it of the IRA).
And you neither lecture me, at least I have the guts to put up my location, you on the other hand ?
And what about the morality of the british forces, do you think they were squeaky clean ?

Your an armchair critique, and an inaccurate one at that, with a skewed view of history.
I walked the civil rights marches, and I also had friends murdered, not by the IRA or loyalists, but by british soldiers.

We are given one little piece of light about the situation here and all you can do is bring up the IRA, it’s people like you that can’t let go of the past that keep the hatred going here, and if your going to bring up the subject then at least be fair.
Sean south( from Limerick) was was shot as a result of attacking a police station along the border during the 1950s IRA s border campaign. It the B Specials/RUC not the black and tans.
If you put up a one sided opinion about the north then expect to be checked, regardless, Sean South was murdered by the british, makes absolutely no difference.
I condemn both loyalist and republican violence, I condemn all violence whatever its origin, which is more than you are doing. You seem to take an a la carte attitude to it.
I don’t pick and choose, it’s you in your past posts that seem hung up on the IRA, be hung up on the loyalists as well, and Ian Paisley, I wouldn’t know where to start about him …
I suggest you go stop trying to rewrite history to suit your purposes.
I suggest you take it up with those websites who’s links I posted, oh I suppose they’re wrong too.
And I also suggest you put up what your objecting to, instead of having me playing the guessing game.

I suppose your an armchair expert, or would that be an armchair general ? oh ! and it’s Enniskillen.

Whats wrong Garryowen, does the truth hurt ?

:tiphat:

1)Firstly go to the top of the thread, look at the title and inwardly inigest it. Its about the IRA.

2)Did I at anytime in my posts say that the British Army were squeaky clean…no I did not. You must be reading a different thread.

3)Was that the same civil rightsmovement that was hijacked and infiltrated by the IRA.

4)Refer back to No 1

5)Sean south, did he expect to attack a fortified police station and get away with it.
  1. Ian Paisley/ Loyalism/ unionism are politically and morally bankrupt just like the IRA.
  2. This forum is called Catholic Answers I was reading it. Was it me who posted the links to the republican site…not it was not. Why would I go out of my way to read rubbish???
  3. Im not an expert by no means but you obviously think that you are.
Once again you come across as someone who is pro IRA, anti British and makes murderers into celebraties. You are either unable or willing to accept or tell the truth. Your version of Irish history is quite unique, entertaining yes but very unique…why let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Reply with something sensible next time other than your little pro IRA rant. Which one are you Gerry or Martin???

Somebody wrote above comparing Iraq to the occupation of Northern Ireland. That is hog wash. Sadam Hussien did not control Northern Ireland. Anyway I love Northern Ireland. I think it can be a great and propersous country on it’s own. The place is full of bright people from both sides. If both sides could come together and form their own government without Irish or British rule I think Northern Ireland could be a real competitor in the Global Market.

God bless,
Jonfan

No Saddam Hussein didn’t occupy Northern Ireland. I was making a point that all occupations have had insurgents (resistance) and collaborators and puppet governments (Stormont for example).

The worst thing in the 70’s and 80’s that the British did was institute Internment without Trial. That’s why I literally cried the day that the States started doing the same, because I thought we were so much better than that.

And the person who complained about trying to kill members of the Royal Family… at least that is a legitimate government target. If you are trying to lead a Resistance, and need to attack to to so, then government targets, IMO, are infinitely better than randomly blowing up shops and such whereby people completely unconnected to the struggle can get caught in the blow up. It’s the difference between insurgents in Iraq who strike US soldiers or Iraqi police (collaborators from their point of view) vs. those who wantonly blow up funeral caravans. The first is at least a valid target (from their perspective) the other is just mass murder.

Seems like the only thing you know is IRA, change the record.

Have you ever condemned the british forces atrocities ?
3)Was that the same civil rightsmovement that was hijacked and infiltrated by the IRA.
Take off the blinkers, the civil rights marches were banned, and the people were being beaten off the streets, then the people looked to the IRA for help.

I marched in them myself at the ripe old age of 12, I watched the RUC beat Catholics off the road with blackthorn sticks, because they were marching for civil rights.

**It is more likely that she was one of several victims of an IRA campaign in Belfast at the time to stop fraternisation with the army. Remember, the women of the Falls Road and Ardoyne brought cups of tea to soldiers manning the barricades to thank them for holding back the loyalist mobs. This was during the period when the IRA was being accused of abandoning Catholic areas in the face of loyalist assault. Graffiti such as “IRA I Ran Away” appeared on walls at the time. **

Here, don’t accuse me of lying, about the Catholics complaining about the IRA abandoning them.

Derry

4)Refer back to No 1
How about refer back to # 6
5)Sean south, did he expect to attack a fortified police station and get away with it.
I was merely pointing to the fact that Sean South was from Garryowen, trying to explain this to another poster.
And although I couldn’t care less I did wonder why you would have chosen that username, seeing as Republicans sing that song on their musical gatherings.
  1. Ian Paisley/ Loyalism/ unionism are politically and morally bankrupt just like the IRA.
Ah ! something we agree on, Ian Paisley is yesterdays man, he’s on his way out, and I’m not sorry, even the loyalists prisoners in the maze, said if the hadn’t listened to him , they wouldn’t be were they were.
  1. This forum is called Catholic Answers I was reading it. Was it me who posted the links to the republican site…not it was not. Why would I go out of my way to read rubbish???
I’ve seen your IRA rants before, if you accuse me of being less than truthful and don’t bother to read the links, then EXCUSE ME !
  1. Im not an expert by no means but you obviously think that you are.
Again I never said that I WAS, stop putting words in my mouth, STOP presuming you know me and my thoughts.

See there you go again insulting me , it’s a sure sign that your losing the argument, or maybe your losing it.
Oh calm down ! 😃 I’m not pro IRA, I’m pro telling the truth, and since I lived here for the 30/35 year conflict I can say I saw it first hand.

Oh ! I’m neither Martin or Gerry. 👍

PS: and goodbye to the UDR another crowd who murdered innocent Catholics, it touched my heart to watch TV this week. :irish1: I can’t believe they’re being disbanded, weep, weep.

I agree that this was the catalyst that set off the recruitment of the IRA, but another poster doesn’t obviously agree.

And although both sides burned each other out of their homes, only Catholics were interned, nice one, talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

A friend of mine, Major General Craig Hagan and I were discussing that. General Hagan said, “You know, the British must really love the IRA because every time the IRA seem to be on the verge of collapse, the British do something to recuscitate them.”😉

WARNING

This forum is not about discussing history. Please bring the discussion back to the present day news events or I will close the thread.

Also, this thread has become uncharitable in a number of posts. Please edit for charity before posting.

Thank you for your understanding.

Now you’re on to something Vern! Remember, “divide and rule”. that’s the method.

you just got to love the logic of some of the posters on here, they fully support the war on terror yet being our allies they get all misty eyed over those callous murderers known as the ira, try being a catholic youth in northern ireland when you are required to do your bit for the “cause”, my cousin bravely said no, and still can’t return home, ira = evil scum,

And on a more positive note, as before, any move to a more peaceful society, is only to be welcomed. :irish2:

The ironic thing about the IRA is that they murdered maimed and tortured more Catholics than the Protestants did. They were nothing more than evil murdering terrorists.
Pax tecum!

That’s not true. The Protestant paramilitary groups have killed more civilians during the course of the troubles than the IRA has. Where are you getting this information from?

In Christ,
Rand

I’m just thankful that the need for armed struggle is gone and that the IRA seems to have realized that.

Sorry to hear it. It was the opposite for a friend of mine. As a Catholic Youth in Northern Ireland, he had all the bones of his face broken by a friendly policeman (RUC). That changed him a bit. But in his family, he was the outcast for *wanting *to “do his bit for the cause”

I guess he would have turned the other cheek if it wasn’t broken! 😃 (black humor)

Well, if the news (and speculation) I’m reading today comes true, it looks like Sinn Fein will soon announce that they will accept the PSNI as a legitimate police force. And it was already agreed that people who belonged “illegal organizations” would be allowed to join the police force. One can only imagine what this will lead to…a former IRA man could be a cop alongside a former UDA man (or UVF,LVF and the rest of them) Only in NI!

In post #25 do you recognize anyone, that is in the picture ? (don’t google) 😉 sorry Robert, I’m trying to be civil, I hope you don’t close the thread.

It appears to be Fr Edward Daly administering last rights to somene on the bloody sunday. And your point is…

I notice that you have soursed the blanket not even handed in their opinion regarding Irish politics. In fact your sourse is extremely biased and not a reliable reference point.

My initial point still stands and your ascerttion that the civil rights movement asked the IRA for help is complete rubbish. The civil rights movement was based on passive resistance their role models being Martin Luther King and Ghandi. The IRA was the final nail in the coffin of the civil rights movement.

I cannot condemn the original goals of the IRA. After all, osme of our holier religous orders helped them obtain their weapons and provided asylum. But they did outlive their usefulness, probably because they turned from being a religious protection type organization to being entirely politically motivated. When the IRA was first formed Catholics were under serious duress and one of the stated aims of the IRA was to see to their needs. But over time, they did what most organizations like this do- they became motivated by wealth, power, greed and politics. Simultaneously they became bloody to every one, catholic and non catholic alike. Any irish person will be happy at the demise of anything that encourages violence now. Ireland has had more than her share of blood and guts.

The IRA was the final nail in the coffin of the civil rights movement.
No. Bloody Sunday did that.

As other posters have said, The British did more to brings in recruits and inspire the IRA than any Irish nationist patriot.

Internment, Bloody Sunday, checkpoints with stripsearches of females, a thousand other things…basically treating people like animals.
