Iran and Turkey Join Syria Peace Envoy in Call for Truce

Well that’s about the first half-decent thing Iran and Turkey have intimated. Let’s hope they can both put their money where their mouth is.

On Monday, [the peace envoy, Lakhdar] Brahimi proposed a cease-fire during the three-day Muslim holiday of Id al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26, hoping that a religious reprieve universally respected by Muslims could be the basis not only for a pause in the fighting but perhaps the beginnings of a dialogue in Syria.

Mr. Brahimi, who was visiting Lebanon on Wednesday, called on the Syrian government to back the cease-fire, saying he had guarantees from rebel leaders that they would observe it if the government acted first. But a Syrian government newspaper expressed doubt that insurgent units, who lack a unified command, would or could simultaneously uphold a cease-fire

But the very modesty of Mr. Brahimi’s proposal seemed to be an indication that in recent months the conflict has drifted further from resolution. Random responses from ordinary Syrians reached by telephone seemed to reflect a similar assessment.

It is a small proposal. If successful, it would offer hope for an eventual resolution to the crisis. But if it fails… I fear that it will cast grave doubt on the peace process.
 
The same thing could be said for The United States of America and her Western allies, who have funded and supported the al-Qaeda and Mujahideen-infested “rebels” - the same “rebels” who have commited numerous massacres and then blamed them on Assad. The same “rebels” who numerous Catholic authorities and charities in Syria have repeatedly warned are brutally murdering and displacing Christians by the thousands. At least Mr. Assad protected the Christian, Jewish, and Alawite minorities in Syria. I gaurantee you, that if “the rebels” take control you will see blood of Christians, Jews, and other Islamic and tribal minorities flow thru the streets like never before. The ones they don’t massacre they will drive out of the region, thus insuring a new Islamic extremist majority. Oh, and by the way, if these “rebels” take control, they will have access to Assad’s chemical and biological weapons cache, which is the largest in the Middle East, as well as access to advanced surface to air missiles. When that happens, terrorists around the world will rejoice and you can bet that they will bring those new toys to a city near you.
