Looks like Iran’s move against the BBC is part of a larger strategy of censorship:

Iran’s bloggers in censorship protest
Iranian authorities are considering the creation of a national intranet - an internet service just for Iran - which would be separate from the world wide web. This would potentially mean that users would not be able to access anything the authorities do not want them to see…

Hundreds of Iranian online journals have been protesting against media censorship by renaming their websites after pro-reformist newspapers and websites that have been banned or shut down by the authorities. The protest was started by blogger Hossein Derakhshan, a student at Toronto university in Canada…

… Mr Derakhshan said he and his fellow bloggers are working on a strategy to get around the intranet, using email subscription services.
Iran’s blocked websites resurface
Three Iranian reformist websites blocked more than a week ago have re-emerged at different internet addresses… The three sites that were blocked last week - Emrooz, Rooydad and Baamdad - were the main outlets for the reformist party, the Participation Front, which is led by Mohammed Reza Khatami, the president’s brother.

The loss of these sites meant that a key source of alternative news and commentary in Iran was no longer available… some of the staff on the original sites have been arrested… One news item in Baamdad from a few days ago reports on moves to try to dissolve the Participation Front, while another reports on threats to a singer by a radical Islamic group.
Some on this board have been suggesting that Ahmadinajed’s policy statements are legitimate. If they are legitimate, then what is the need for

a) censorship?

b) imprisonment of journalists?

c) destruction of political opposition? **
