Agence France Presse, Dec. 16, 2012

Planned deployment of US-made Patriot missiles in Turkey is a “provocative” action which could bring about “uncalculated” results, Iran’s foreign minister said on Sunday.

“The deployment of Patriot missiles will achieve nothing but to provoke and, God forbid, result in being forced into an uncalculated action,” Ali Akbar Salehi said in remarks reported by the official IRNA news agency.

“Their deployment will be more provocative rather than deterrent,” he said and warning that the Patriot missiles would not “help regional security.”

His comments came a day after Iran’s top general issued a stern warning to Ankara over its planned hosting of the missile batteries, saying it was part of a Western plot to “create a world war.”

“The Patriot (missiles) are threatening. Each one of them is a black dot on the map, (setting the stage) to create a world war,” said General Hassan Firouzabadi, Iran’s armed forces chief of staff.

“This is very dangerous for everyone, and even for the future of Europe,” he said.

At the request of Turkey, NATO has agreed to provide Patriot missiles to bolster its member’s border defences amid tensions with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

But both Russia and Iran, the most powerful allies of the Assad regime, are opposed to the move.

When a country is running scared it will make exaggerated claims and threats. That’s nothing new. The Muslim world is hardly organized enough to wage a world war against the West. They can’t agree on much of anything except that they’re not to blame for anything and the West is to blame for everything wrong that ever happened in the history of planet earth. It’s saber rattling, nothing more.

I agree, I am merely quoting it to show the hysteria of the Iranian leadership and their attempts at hiding their fear of the biting international community’s sanctions under aggressive and increasingly wacky statements 👍

Of course, the rhetoric isn’t for our sake–it’s to get their people all worked up so their leaders can stay in power. I feel so badly for those people. But war has always been a good way to keep the people’s minds off their real troubles, and who is really to blame, by arousing patriotic and even religious fervor. This doesn’t make patriotism or religious fervor bad, but it misdirects them and twists them into tools for bad men to do what they want to do at the expense of those who are suffering the most. The people of Iran and other such countries have my sincere prayers.

RT is reporting that more than 3,000 US troops have secretly returned to Iraq via Kuwait. According to RT correspondent, the US troops have secretly entered Iraq in multiple stages and are mostly stationed at Balad military garrison in Salahuddin province and al-Asad air base in al-Anbar province. Reports say the troops include US Army officers and almost 17,000 more are set to secretly return to Iraq via the same route.

Honestly, I’d be more concerned if they didn’t make a threat. At least we know that nothing has changed.

:hmmm:My late father, who died in 1996 said the same thing. If World War Three starts;it will start in the Middle East’and also mentioned nukes in regards to Iran.
No he wasn’t crazy;but a man who spent 33years working in military intelligence for the US Airforce;1942 to 1975.He was very knowledgeable about history including the Middle East;and could certainly explain to you his reasons for believing why this would happen.
I certainly don’t look at this as just some trash talk on their part.
If what RT is reporting is true; then there is certainly some reason for the troop increase.

So weapons with only defensive capabilities being placed on the border of a country in a civil war that has been firing missiles close to Turkey is “provocative”. Got it.

Agreed. That’s part of the culture in the Middle East. Making ridiculously grandiose threats is their way of “saving face”. Saddam in particular loved doing this. They also place a high emphasis on fighting for “honor”, though this sometimes means they have little regard for effectiveness. Just make a good show of it, fire a lot of rounds randomly, and go home feeling like a warrior.

I’ve been told, though I’ve not studied it myself, that Ahmadinejad is actually a moderate in Iran. Which tells me that the nation has a somewhat skewed understanding of itself, at leat among the leadership, and one that is not entirely in touch with what the rest of the world thinks.

Not too far from North Korea, then, which imprisoned people for not appearing sincerely anguished over the late Kim Jong-Il’s death.

Wish I had the opportunity to talk to your father. Sounds like he knew a lot.

The ME is truly a crazy place. Three populous states, each with a history of war with each other and dominion over the mix of petty states, some of which have massive resources, and some of which have virtually none. Each has a significant history of imperialism. Each has, in recent decades, turned to its own version of radical Islam. Each has armed forces with advanced weapons it can poorly afford. Each has significant minorities that do not like the ruling majority’s domination. None particularly like the other. None likes the West. One is aggressive in establishing client terrorist organizations and colonies. Two are known for their cruelty. One has committed significant genocide.

We are, unfortunately, “allied” with one of them; a holdover relationship from the Cold War. We are obliged by agreement to provide arms to another. It is hard for me to believe anything good can come from that region.
