Jack Kelly has written an excellent rundown of the situation in Iran that bullet-points what we face. The prospects are grim. The situation clear. Does anyone have the courage to recognize the signs for what they are?
Even in a diminished electorate comprised largely of government employees, Revolutionary Guardsmen and secret policemen, Ahmadeinejad required help to reach the runoff. Michael Ledeen, the Iran expert who writes for National Review, reported that his sources told him about 7 million people voted in the first round of the election June 17. Yet 29 million ballots were cast. The blatant manipulation of an already sham election to install a hard-line reactionary as president suggests that the Ayatollah Khameini, chief of the Guardian Council, no longer sees a need to put a “reformist” face on the regime.
That suggests to me that Iran is very close to – or already possesses – a nuclear weapon and the means to deliver it.
Simply stated: Concur.
Jack Kelly bullets several items that have been reported regarding Iran and al Qaeda:
1.) An Iranian exile warned the CIA of a 2003 al-Qaeda plot to hijack a Canadian aircraft and fly it into the Seabrook (NH) nuclear plant. The CIA dismissed him. 2.) Iran has no fewer than three top al Qaeda operatives under ‘house arrest’. While others dispute Iran’s ‘house arrest’ claim, that it is no more than ‘house arrest’ should be telling enough.
3.) bin Laden himself is said to have been to Iran last year to discuss attack plans on the US. (I commented on the Iranian influence that was apparent in his 30October04 video message.)
4.) 9/11 conspirator Ramzi bin al Shibh spent a month in Iran prior to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Jack rightly concludes that al Qaeda may be no further from a nuclear weapon than Iran is…and that is not far off at best.
If al-Qaida and the mullahs are in cahoots, then al-Qaida may get the bomb when Iran does. The war on terror could be about to heat up in a very, very big way. In the meantime, now that the mullahs have discarded their “moderate” mask, there likely will be a bloody crackdown on dissidents.
Meanwhile, the Iranian people continue their struggle to free themselves of the mullahcracy.
For Iranians to be able to take their country back, it will require a deep well of courage on their part and no small amount of direct support on our part. If either falls short, a direct military confrontation is inevitable.
May we not wait around for the need to counterstrike. The time to act is now.
Support the Iranians now or confront the mullahs later. There is no palatable option at this point.
Take your pick, America.
