Where did Jesus’ teaching on love negate common sense or realism?
This is what Jesus in fact spoke.

“But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” Matthew 5:44

So, now you I ask you to show us where Jesus taught something different, that would apply to the context of this thread.

See Post #31. Also remember that one of the Cardinal Virtues is prudence and that is something that would be needed with this.

Ahmadinejad is requesting a meeting with the Pope, he’s not looking to make war.

BTW, prudence must be incorporated with love and compassion.

How do you know what Ahmadinejad’s intentions are? Former British PM Neville Chamberlain had a written agreement with Hitler’s government that they wouldn’t invade.

How would you feel / what would you do if you were the one who Ahmadinejad asked to meet with?

Where did Jesus or the Apostles teach this?

Jim
Jesus taught us to be loving, yes. He also taught us to take heed.

Mark 8:15 “And he (Jesus) charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees**,** and of the leaven of Herod."

Matthew 24:4-5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

And let us not forget:

Matthew 10:17 Be on your guard against men…

If the latest news reports are correct, the Pope will not be meeting with Ahmadinejad. Thankfully, you are not amongst the Pope’s advisors. I trust that his decision was guided by the Holy Spirit.

I don’t remember seeing this in the Bible.

And of course these verses from Scripture have nothing to do with the Pope meeting with Ahmadinejad.

Even Jesus met with the Pharisees and communicated with them, even when correcting them.

However, my contention in this thread, is the dehumanizing language that was used at the beginning.

Its the sort of propaganda governments use, to make hatred of one’s enemy, acceptable and patriotic.

The scripture verses have to do with your post about loving our enemies. That is why they are included.

As for your contention about the dehumanizing language that you attributed to:
Anti-Christ, lucifurnation, lunatic.
are **NO WHERE **to be found in the OP link. Perhaps you should have started your own thread on the link where you found those words and justify why you never posted that link?

They have nothing to do with Jesus instruction to love our enemies. Jesus never placed conditions on this teaching.

The dehumanizing language was not in the OP link, but by the participants of this thread, which is un-Christian.

Hope this helps. 🙂

Ahmadinejad and Pope Benedict XVI didn’t exist at the time, so that’s rather obvious. However, the counsel to take heed with certain men is a timeless one to be applied wisely when necessary. Given the fact that the Pope is not going to meet with Ahmadinejad, it’s clear what the right course of action was in this case. Good thing, too:

“Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad predicted yesterday that Israel will soon be “erased” and that the “satanic power of the United States” will be “annihilated,” according to reports from Tehran.”

blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/06/ahmadinejad-pre.html

I’m sure the Pope doesn’t want to be mistakenly characterized as supporting this kind of hate speech. Considering how unsuccessful the Vatican’s Concordat with the Nazis was, I think we can see from history that meeting with these kinds of leaders is not productive… or wise.
