I’m not sure if this is true or not, but according to what was on the arabic news, someone offered to pay for the bishops freedom, and this is the unclear part, the bishop allegedly said don’t pay them anything thing, I’m ready to go, and they will just do it to another bishop if you pay them.

He and St. Ignatius of Antioch are now enjoying each others direct company. Praise God for courageous and holy men.

Chaldean Rite,

This is what I know so far, that according to this article, it says:

Gunmen sprayed his car with bullets, killed two bodyguards and shoved the archbishop into the trunk of a car, the church officials said. In the darkness, he managed to pull out his cellphone and call the church, telling officials not to pay a ransom for his release, they said.

“He believed that this money would not be paid for good works and would be used for killing and more evil actions,” the officials said.

Indeed!

God bless,

Is this not heroic virtue?

It certainly seems that way to me, and it also seems that he was killed in odium fidei, the classic definition of martyrdom.
Yes, I think we’ll have a new martyr on our Saint rolls soon. 🙂

Peace and God bless!

That video is very sad. I felt for that family whose daughter was kidnapped, tortured, raped and killed. The pain of her mother, father, sisters and brothers was evident. Sad and sick.

I agree with the Holy Father that “enough” of the killing and destruction. It is sinful no matter who is doing it. Muslims who love Allah must certainly realize it is wrong and stand shoulder to shoulder with Christians to protect the sanctity of human life.

Would you be kind enough to elaborate on what in odium fidei means since my internet search didn’t come up w/ anything definitive?

It is a Latin term which means “in hatred against the faith”.
So Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, leader of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Mosul can be said to have been ‘martyred in hatred against the faith.’ Being martyred for one’s faith is the greatest love a Christian can give or express for God.

By dieing for his faith this good bishop no doubt went straight to heaven and God may reward him with the highest honors that can be bestowed on human souls. This is a sign that God is rebuilding and revitalizing His Church in Iraq. Martyred blood is the seed stock of The Church. I have been praying for Iraqi Christians and for Our Church in Iraq. The terrorists and evil doers in attacking and murdering such an innocent and good man of God are giving God the moral justification to enter this conflict and invoke His Divine Justice and to punish the evil doers while expanding His Church. The Bishop’s death will result in many conversions for The Church and strengthen the faithful. Evil just shot itself in the foot by attacking one of God’s Holy Priests.

The Catholic Church worldwide is now in a state of Martyrdom as in the days of old. This is exactly how God rebuilds His Church. Pope John Paul II recognized this and wrote of this in his 1994 apostolic letter Tertio Millennio Adveniente (The Coming Third Millennium), “The Church has once again become a Church of martyrs.”

Pray for the Catholic Church in Iraq to remain faithful during this period of persecution. The good bishops sacrifice will be rewarded and those who did such a cowardly and shameful act will receive their divine retribution if they do not repent and convert their hearts.

His call from the trunk instructing no ransom gives strong aid as well to the in odium fidei cause as well: by so ordering, he knew that he was at the kidnapper’s mercy alone, and trusting in God, not men.

It may be that the dear Bishop’s blood shed for God is already helping God change the region.

“Our Lady of the Rosary” Catholic Church celebrated its historic consecration this past weekend!

First Catholic Church Opens in Qatar
First Roman Catholic church opens in Qatar

When Our Lady of the Rosary opens its doors, it will make Saudi Arabia the only Gulf state that still bans churches.
Qatar:
Thousands of worshippers gathered in a long and emotional ceremony Saturday for the consecration of the first Roman Catholic church in the Gulf state of Qatar, ending decades of underground Christian worship in this Sunni Muslim and deeply conservative country.

A Cardinal presented the parish with a chalice offered by the Pope during the** five-hour mass**, and many worshippers wept when a relic of Catholic Saint Padre Pio da Pietrelcina was introduced in the church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Pray for the conversion of Arabic regions to The Caholic Faith. Pray the rosary for the spread of The Church into all of Arabia!

To be killed in odium fidei means to be killed out of hatred for the faith.

From video posted here, I believe that many attacks on Chaldean Catholics are motivated by odium fidei, and I ask for prayers for them and for the conversion of Muslims.

The link to the video no longer works. I’ve requested another and as soon as I get it I’ll pass it along.

Can there be any doubt that Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho is interceding on our behalf even at this moment? Blessed be the Lord God in Heaven! Amen! Alleluia!
