"Cardinal Sean Brady stressed it was a “sacred and treasured” rite.

His comments follow the publication of the Cloyne report which found the diocese failed to report all complaints of abuse to police.

The Irish government said in future, priests would not be excused for withholding information about abuse even if it was given during confession.

The Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland told worshippers during his homily at Knock shrine in County Mayo, on Sunday: “Freedom to participate in worship and to enjoy the long-established rites of the church is so fundamental that any intrusion upon it is a challenge to the very basis of a free society” he said."

I hope that legislation doesn’t get passed. It is very troubling to me.
 
It’s a sad state of affairs when a Cardinal has to defend basic Catholic teachings in a supposedly Catholic country.

As I understand it, New Hampshire and West Virginia require any person to report any suspected abuse. This includes priests hearing such during confession.

Although the name of the person escapes me, I recall one guest on Catholic Answers Live remarking that pedophiles aren’t stupid, just reprehensible. If a pedophile knows that the seal of confession isn’t absolute, they just won’t confess their crimes. Not only that, but how many people will now look twice at confession knowing that what they tell their confessor may not be held in the strictest of confidence. Actually, I think I’m unaware of any proposal in the west or otherwise which begins to approach the enormity of just how bad an idea this legislation is.
