SEVERAL government TDs have told how they were ā€œdiscouragedā€ by members of the clergy from taking Holy Communion over their support for the controversial abortion legislation.

A number of TDs, particularly in rural areas, said priests had warned them off from seeking Communion if they voted in favour of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.

One deputy told the Sunday Independent: ā€œI was approached by one priest recently and was told very clearly not to go to him looking for Communion that Sunday, as I would be refused.ā€

I hope and pray that some day, the Eucharist will be protected from those politicians in the USA who proclaim abortion as a right over the rights of the child to be born.
 
I wish more American bishops were willing to excommunicate for this and similar grave public offenses.

As Jesus said, If your eye or hand offends you, cut if off: better to arrive in Heaven without them than to be thrown into Gehenna (Hell).

Agreed. I can think of a few Californians off the top of my head that should have the same treatment. šŸ‘
 
And perhaps in Ireland itā€™s not too late - maybe at least some are still Catholic enough to take this in the spirit intended - as discipline to cause reflection which leads to repentance and conversion of heart. Even excommunication when it is used has that as its aim.

In America, unfortunately, and other countries who have been on the secular downhill slide too long already, though, it seems to lead to wailing that oneā€™s ā€œrightsā€ are being violated and to lawsuits. :rolleyes:
 
First Argentina, then Bolivia and now Ireland. Wonder when the USA/Canada will be next?
 
Maybe Irelandā€™s example will spill over into the US. We can only pray it willā€¦
 
I think itā€™s reasonable to deny communion to politicians who vote for abortion. It really is ridiculous, these politicians thumbing their noses so publicly over such a serious matter.šŸ˜¦
 
Itā€™s about time somebody started to do more about this.
Personally Iā€™m not sure why they would be seeking Holy Communion with those kinds of beliefs in the first place.

Sigh politicians these days. :tsktsk:
 
They calling the killing of innocent baby life ā€œprotection of lifeā€. May God have mercy on them when they die and have to answer for doing the work of the devil.

This is not an excommunication, though. Itā€™s merely reminding someone they are in a state of mortal sin, and that someone in the state of mortal sin (which is what voting to legalize abortion is, as Iā€™m sure everyone here agrees) canā€™t receive Communion.

A person voting for legalizing abortion, in itself, does not merit excommunication under canon law. But you do not need to be excommunicated to be barred from receiving Communion at Mass.

livingword unity, well, the thing is that basically a mob of people (Ireland has unfortunately secularised due to the downsides of being previously flush with money) saw legalized abortion in the cases presented in the bill as ā€œprotecting the life of the motherā€ (never mind that a nonpartisan commission found it unnecessary to deal with the problems they supposedly wanted it to solve). And the politicians, making a mob of angry constituents their God, voted yes.
